My journey with Alcohol started when I turned 21. I sort of knew that I was an alcoholic before I ever took that first drink of alcohol. I wouldn't know until years, that my premonition about alcoholism was true. I had to learn the hard way; that drinking alcohol, wasn't for me. Unfortunately, I wasn't born with a manual that said," DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL!" I learned as a child that alcohol was fun. People drank alcohol to relax and have a good time.

I am providing head injury information and advice from a survivor living life. This is my story: I was hit by a car when I was three years old, in 1974. I have grown up all my life with the effects of the head injury. I am now 40 years old. When I was hit by the car, I was in a coma for two weeks afterwards. I had to learn how to do everything all over again. The effects of the accident, left me with coordination and learning problems. As well as a life-long struggle with depression. I also still have a mild tremor in my hands. I am writing this in the hope that I will provide encouragement to people who have had head injuries and that they should never give up. The only people who really know what the effects are, are those that live with them every day. Life is a learning and a growth experience. Just remember this, where there's a will, there's a way. I am constantly pushing the limits of my abilities and am therefore, constantly growing; both physically and mentally. Peace...

The thing that eats at me more than anything else is the person that I think I should be. I would like to think that I'm all high and mighty but, I know that, that's not reality. The reality is that I'm just a human being, struggling to make it just like everybody else. Why does it have to be a struggle? Why can't I just enjoy life? I guess if you are constantly trying to make things better, that something should be a struggle; otherwise, nothing would need to change and everything could stay the same, forever.

Day to day functioning with a tbi, traumatic brain injury isn't easy. I should know, I had a brain injury as a child and I want to let others know that have had brain injuries, that they aren't alone. I also want to let them know that what they are experiencing is normal for this condition. It's not something that they should feel bad about. With persistence and determination, you can overcome whatever obstacles stand in your way. The reason that I know this is because I went from being a small child in a coma, clinging onto life; to a mature human being making a difference in humanity. If I can do it, anybody can do it. I've always made a point to move forward and not look back on the past as a crutch. If you do the best you can, with what you have, where you are; then, there isn't a person on this planet who can ask anything more of you. The point of all this is, that it's a learning experience. The end result of learning is always growth in some direction.
