The account here is from Mark 4:1-20 but you will also find the parable - which is sometimes called The Parable Of The Four Soils or The Parable Of The Seed - recorded in Matthew 13:1-23 and Luke 8:4-15. It is one of the few parables that Jesus explained to his disciples, which makes it a particularly significant parable. As with all of Jesus parables, what it says and what it means are two different things. Jesus lived in an agrarian culture and so he used agricultural terms to teach his followers because He knew these were terms that they would be familiar with. When a farmer plants seeds, the results of his labors depend to a large extent on the environment, in particular the soil itself.
