Squidoo : Lenses by paulbarton

My name is Paul Barton and I live in the UK but work all over the world. My driving passion is my family and my personal goals. I believe that the population of the world today is facing such a massive rise in disease and illness because of poor diet and lifestyle choices. You could call me a "real food" fanatic. I believe we need to get back to the fundamentals of good food where possible and where not available move towards sensibly chosen scientifically based supplementation. ...

Trehalose - everyone needs it

Trehalose is a relatively recent discovery and just 10 years ago Trehalose was confined to the research labs and academics. The breakthrough came in Japan about 15 years ago when a scientist managed to get an enzyme to convert simple starch into Trehalose. This breakthrough enabled Trehalose to reach many more places and today it is used widely in the cosmetic industry, skincare, food preparation and the freezing of living organisms for transportation or research - called cryo-preservation. Trehalose has the ability to stabilise proteins and that's one of its major uses in the food industry. Trehalose was first used in Japan to help in the preparation of sushi where it helps with stability, flavour and shelf life. Learn about Trehalose and how it can aid healthful living. It is a viable, natural alternative to sucrose (white table sugar) and research suggests that it is a good alternative natural sweetener and much better than Aspartame or Nutra Sweet - oh and an added benefit is that you will have better energy levels throughout the day. When eaten it has a very low effect on the blood glucose level and hence is very useful for diabetics. Due to its ability to stabilise protein it may also have some benefits in terms of aiding neurological degenerative diseases.

Healthy Sugars - Are There Any

We've been told by countless people over countless years that Sugar is bad for us and we've believed it to be a true statement. The question we should be asking is this Is all sugar the same and are there healthy sugars and even vital sugars. We know know that the statement 'all fats are bad for us' was wrong. Some fats are bad for us but equally some fats are actually essential - Omega 3 being one. Sugar is the common name for sucrose and there are few people who would disagree that too much sucrose or sugar is bad for you. Notice that too much is the operative phrase. It might surprise you that sucrose is vital for the brain to work correctly - without it it doesn't work well. For the brain to work well sucrose is necessary. There are many other sugars that are both necessary and healthy. Healthy sugars are now finding their place alongside functional foods and combined with pharmaceuticals are giving therapeutic options never before considered.

Get your complementary Parents Guide to Sickle Cell Sickle Cell was very poorly understood as recently as 1960. It existed we just didn't understand it. Today we understand sickle cell (often referred to as sickle cell anaemia, sickle-cell or sicklecell) but as yet there is no cure. There is a hope of a cure based upon stem cells but so far Sickle Cell is essentially incurable. Pharmaceutical drugs don't work well with Sickle Cell in the long term and our focus has been on management of the condition. So we work to help parents and adults help their children and themselves to live full and productive lives.

The essential amino acids are arginine (required for the young, but not for adults), histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.

The 10 amino acids that we can produce are alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine and tyrosine. Tyrosine is produced from phenylalanine, so if the diet is deficient in phenylalanine, tyrosine will be required as well.

Label Printers

Label Printers are becoming the must have desktop accessory for productivity. Imagine needing to print a label and just selecting the text and sending it to the label printer directly. It's fast, clean and easy. Labels used to cause so many problems but today with all the technology improvements we are now in a time when it's easy. In truth it is so easy that once you have a label printer you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Label printers come in many shapes and sizes and include handheld devices, colour printers, barcode printers, desktop label printers and full scale high output label printers.
Most labels are self adhesive and come supplied on continuous rolls. The labels can be pre printed with your logo or address or return address and good labelling is now seen as a vital part of even the smallest business. Labels can be coloured and even metallic. Label printing machines generally use 3 different printing techniques; laser and inject being the most common but thermal printers may suit some applications.
Most label printers come with their own software and most word processing, spreadsheet and database software can handle labels with very little setting up. In the home imagine having all your storage jars labelled. In the office every file and draw correctly labelled. Addresses are crisp and easy to read. You can even send out change of address labels with letters and orders.

Dioscorea villosa is the Mexican Wild Yam that has received most attention particularly for its health benefits. It is important that right at the start we make the distnction between Sweet Yams - that you'll find in the supermarket. They are quite different.
The wild yams that we are interested in include Diascora barbasco, Diascorae villosa, Diascorae batatas, Diascorae floribunda and Diascorae composita.
Why is there so much interest in The Mexican Wild Yam?

Galactose is a vital component of our diets and sadly it is becoming increasingly rare in our processed diets.
Once in a while we meet life changing people and in our case a dog. We first met Tilly near Swindon in August 2000 on holiday. She was one of a litter of Airdale puppies and was the only one left - everyone else had been sold and were due to be picked up in the coming days. She was all legs and black with dark brown patches. Her jaw was a bit odd and her lower front teeth were crooked. Put simply you could understand why she was the only one left. She was a misfit but we adopted her and the next 11 years were to transform our lives. She proved willful and yet incredibly loyal. Stong and yet very gentle. In short we, as a family, fell in love with her and she responded in ways that still astonish us. This is our story.

ALZHEIMERS and TREHALOSE

Alzheimer's is an incurable, degenerative and terminal illness that is more common in the elderly but is also known in much younger people 20 years and upwards. It is typified by memory loss, confusion, short & long term memory issues, mood swings and other problems.
It places huge burdens on carers and despite many hundreds of pharmaceutical drug trials as yet there is no treatment or cure. So my principal belief is go back to nature. That is what this lens is about.
Alzheimer's is characterised by the build up of mal-formed proteins in the brain which effectively stops it working right. If you can go to the root of the problem and stop or reduce the proteins mal-forming in the first place then it doesn't take a brain scientist to see the potential benefits. Trehalose has been seen to do just that in medical studies.

Linda Caster is the wife of Sam Caster, founder and Chairman of the Board of Mannatech Inc., a global nutraceutical company. She is also the co-founder and Vice President of MannaRelief, a Christian charity that freely supplies highly specialized nutritional products to thousands of orphans and critically ill children around the world. Linda gracefully handles both international stages of business and Christian ministry through these companies, while remaining completely dedicated to raising her children and supporting her husband. Linda, Sam and their children live in the Dallas, Texas area.

Linda must be crying over Mannatech and it's impending, almost inevitable, demise. The leadership and management decisons are so woefully poor that people are leaving by the thousands and if you believed in the God given destiny of Mannatech once then the stark truth is that Mannatech is now such an ungodly organisation that it has lost the calling of God - in my opinion.

Artificial Sweeteners

The human body is a remarkable thing but strangely it can get addicted to things. All addictions are harmful in some way but we have become so sensitised to food being sweet that a huge number of people are effectively addicted to sucrose or glucose or artificial sweeteners - e.g.. sucralose, splenda, Nutrasweet. If we use sucrose or glucose we pile on the pounds and we crave sugar with everything. This addiction is at the root of the epidemics of obesity, diabetes, dental decay and so much more. By listening to chemical and food companies who substitute sugar with artificial sweeteners we are storing up equally serious problems.
Chocoholics that includes you too.
We need to try to get back to a diet that contains far less sucrose and avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague.

I remember one time that even driving around a roundabout i had to stop because I felt so ill. Sometimes the acute pain feels like a heart attack and other times it feels like your stomach is in a vice.
Well it needn't be like that. The solutions are relatively easy and simple.
About 7% of people experience this problem daily
a further 14% have heartburn once a week or more
and 20% percent will experience it once a year or less frequently

almond trehalose macaroons

I've always loved the sweet chewy taste of almond macaroons. I remember being given one to chew on as a child qand the taste remains with me to this very day. However, my health deteriorated over the years and when i reached the dizzy age of 38 yrs I was forced by medical issues into an early retirement. I didn't stop working but just worked from home. Interestingly I'm more productive today than at any time in my life but thats anotehr story for another day.
Because my health was suffering I began to research and read up about health and particularly about how food can and does directly impact on health - that process started in 1996. My initial research focussed on functional carbohydrates - plant sugars and their functions. It happened to be an area of science where there had been little interest at all but in 1996 Harpers Biochemistry published a newly revised text book with a new chapter about biologically active sugars.
Almost 16 years later I find myself still involved with functional carbohydrates and witha specail interest in one; Trehalose.
In short Trehalose is a sugar that has some exciting benefits for users and in particular around diabetes and neurological problems.
My love of food lead me to experiment with Trehalose in cooking and the recipe the follows is the most succesful yet.

DIABETES HELP

The odds are that you, or someone you know, has diabetes already or is at risk for developing this disease. Nearly 21 million Americans-or roughly 1 in every 14 people-have diabetes, and many more are at risk (the proportionate figures for the UK are much the same). Of course, if you or someone you love has diabetes, the disorder is about much more than a statistic. It means a new way of life. Eating a meal, planning a vacation, or going for a run requires forethought and planning.

The top medical journal, NEJM in May 2001 proclaimed that in fact one can "cure" type two diabetes with diet and exercise. The dietary modifications were able to reduce the rate of diabetes by nearly 60% and they did that without even understanding some of the most basic foundational truths of food choices. These investigators were absolutely clueless with respect to the influence of grain and sugar restriction on insulin optimization. So if the traditionally recommended low-fat diet can reduce diabetes by 60%, if one uses the modified food choice program you can reduce type two diabetes by well over 95%.

Nitric Oxide and Sickle Cell

Research into Sickle Cell as recently as 2005 suggests that an inability of red blood cells to relax blood vessels through the release of nitric oxide is a major factor behind the disease's primary symptoms -- including oxygen deprivation and blocked vessels that can lead to pain, clots and stroke. Thus, therapies that restore nitric oxide to blood cells might serve as a useful method for treating the disease, said HHMI researcher Jonathan Stamler, M.D., professor of pulmonary medicine and cardiology at Duke University Medical Center.

The symptoms of sickle cell disease have generally been attributed to the physical obstruction of blood vessels by distorted, or "sickled," and rigid red cells, Stamler said. The new findings, for the first time, implicate abnormal vessel dilation by the red cells themselves in oxygen deficiency. That oxygen deficiency, in turn, may result in sickling and, ultimately, the irreversible obstruction of blood vessels.

The Pajero is a strong, stylish and comfortable 4x4 and one that has gained an enviable reputation among enthusiasts. The first few cars go back to about 1988 and had either a 2.3lt diesel engine or a 2.6lt Petrol Engine. Both would be considered underpowered today but they would go just about anywhere. They have a wonderfully strong fanbase in the Pajero Owners Club UK or POCUK and I'll share some ideas from there but give full credit to a fantastic bunch of people who frankly can't be bettered.

Too little and you just can't perform and too much and you'll feel awful. Elite athletes learn how to ensure they have the right levels at the right time, that's why they load with starchy foods just before the race.
Trehalose, being a slow and controlled release carbohydrate, is now being incorporated into sports programmes all over the world.

STROKES - BE AWARE OF THE SIGNS

There is a lot of misunderstanding and confusion about strokes and it is worth knowing the signs and what to do about them. In very simple terms a stoke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or even reduced. They can be caused by burst blood vessels, blood clots, embolism (bubbles) or physical trauma.
What happens when an area of the brain gets staved of oxygen is that it begins to die - there may be pain, loss of motor control but the long and short of it is that the brain begins to die. If you can restore the blood supply inside about 3 hours the chances of a full recovery are very good.

portable label printers

Labels have come a long way in 50 years. I remember many years ago working for my father, as a young teenager, the delight at being 'allowed' to make labels for the business with a new gadget called a dymo labeller. Sure I'd quietly borrowed it to make the odd frivolous label for myself but being 'let free' with the labeller was a real treat. I know it is sad - but that was in the early 1970s. Today the dymo label has had a massive makeover and today they are a completely different animal. Fast, colourful and clever. Gone are labels with the odd embossed letter not sitting on the right like as in the photograph. Today they can produce intricate symbols and even artwork.
The new dymo labellers use long tapes and rather than embossing actually print on adhesive tape. This simple-to-use system allows you to create labels exactly the way you want. It prints on a variety of coloured labels plus adds popular features like multiple font styles, underlining, bolding, text sizing and more. Unlike other label makers, the exclusive graphical display shows exactly how your label will print. This means no more guessing what the labels will look like. What you see is what you get.

The competition reminds me of a sort of gladiatorial match between culinary warriors. The question is who wields the biggest sword and who has the agility to respond and react fastest? Who Will win? Who is your champion?
Is it:

the fact that we like to see their failures
the new techniques and recipes that we can see
the spectator in us that likes to watch a modern version of gladiators in combat?
or something else entirely

One of the best indicators of Ageing is level of inflammation in your systems. C-reactive protein (CRP)was originally discovered by Tillett and Francis in 1930 as a substance in the serum of patients with acute inflammation. As inflammation increases so does the level of CRP - it is this CRP that is reduced with both Steroids and Statins (those drugs that reduce Cholesterol)

For an Englishman the Americas cup is an emotive subject. We held the innaugural race around the Isle of Wight in 1851 between 2 yachts - it was won by the yacht America and sadly hasn't been won by the UK ever since. In truth it remained with the USA until 1983 when it was won by the yacht Australia II. The race is held every few years and the next defence takes place in San Diego in 2013 in very advanced wing sailed catamarans.

The America's Cup World Series is a new feature and consists of a circuit of regattas, bringing Cup racing to top venues around the world.

The AC World Series has been created to help teams prepare for the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America's Cup Challenger Series and the America's Cup Finals.

The most interesting development for most people is the switch to the AC45 class of multihulls, powered by towering wingsails.

Even though we lost to France in the 2011 Rugby World Cup I'm still proud to be English. The Scottish are patriotic, the Welsh are glad to poke fun at the English and the Australians just want to beat us at any sport. Why is it they can be patriotic but being English gets lost in the background noise?

I'm proud to be English and this site is all about that. It is not intended to annoy the Scots, The Welsh or Irish.
England has a proud tradition and it is interesting that when people visit the UK the speak of 'London England'.
I'm proud to be English.

Diabetes is endemic in western society today and it is increasing all over the world where we see people switch to a diet rich in simple starch and carbohydrates. China, Nigeria, Kenya, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Europe, America, Canada are all reporting explosive growth in diabetes. We have to find an answer which changes habits and Trehalose may be a very convenient easily adoptable component of the solution.

We have to be honest but some of what we are seeing in terms of the effects of Trehalose can only be explained by educated guesswork. For example why are pain levels reduced when using Trehalose. Why, when using Trehalose, have haemoglobin levels gone up to levels never seen before?

SPRINGFIELD -- A federal grand jury indicted three businesses in Springfield on Thursday on charges of fraudulent marketing. The grand jury believes the companies, their two owners and business associates fraudulently marketed several dietary supplements over the Internet with illegal claims that the products could prevent, treat, or cure a number of diseases. Investigators say the businesses sold the products to a business in Michigan that used several Web sites to sell more than $16 million worth of the products in 2005 and 2006. The indictments, which include 40 separate crimes, are against Charles Thao, Mai Lor, Nutrapha Research, Bio Nutrasource, Tony Pham, Tong Vang, Techmedia Health (also known as Frist Nutrients and K.Y.C.), Shua Vang. The defendants, who were all arrested by Thursday, could face decades in prison or hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of fines.

Whether you are a scrapbooker, a stamp collector, you collect paperweights or a lover of spiders you will need to label your collection. Handwriting is ok but being able to create colourful and artistic labels for various items can enhance your collection.
If you have a collection of historical family photographs what better way to label than with bright and clear labels that can even be indexed. The Brother PT90 printer enables you to use a wide variety of different fonts and type faces. It also prints 2 line labels and can even print special characters.
The unit is light, ergonomic and portable and suitable for use by all the family.

Home Labelling

Now I love cooking and have close to 50 or so jars of spices, herbs, mixtures and peculiar seeds. Sometimes I grind my own spices and store them for quick and easy use but very often I forget which pots contain what spice. I need to label them - including the date of grinding because they do go stale with time.
The same applies to flour. I have at least 6 or 7 different flours in my cupboard and each need labelling. I'm haphazard and disorganised so a label printer that is quick and easy would suit me really well.
The Dymo 450 fits the bill exactly - I can work with it on my desk - produce labels of all sizes and even colours and then simply apply to my pots and jars. The text size is flexible and that makes it idea for small jars or bottles while the larger ones can have larger text.
The uses in the home/home office are almost limitless. Address labels it does cheaply but when you start looking at file labels, name tags, even identifying small cables at the back of the TV or computer it all starts to come alive. Quite simply you'll wonder how you managed without one.

Gardening Labels

I'm a keen gardener and frequently I have brilliant ideas. Acer seeds collected while out on a walk at StourHead National Trust garden. Seeds from a rare tomato plant saved for next year. Plant cuttings taken and rooted. You might say that I've got green fingers but the truth is that many of my 'good ideas' are wasted because I fail to label my collections, my seeds, cuttings and seedlings. Even the trays of seeds are often mixed up and we have to wait until the seeds have germinated to guess what they are.
Since we have labelled our plants and seeds we have at last been able to track what we are growing and the results speak for themselves.

Insulin - is it essential?

If we ate food that wasn't highly processed and didn't contain loads of starchy carbohydrates would we even need insulin? This lens sets out to examine the question - what would life be like if we didn't NEED Insulin?
Let me expand just so you know where we are headed.
I've been working in the proactive health protection/restoration field for 12 years and have noticed that when people change to a diet that consists of raw fruits and vegetables plus nuts, seeds and beans for protein that many, if not all, pre-existing health conditions just become less of an issue and in many cases go away completely.
My belief, based on years of observations, is that high levels of glucose in the blood stream regularly lead to high levels of Insulin in an attempt to control it. When the body can't produce enough insulin thats called diabetes.
If you control the diet so well that you don't need Insulin then some amazing things occur.

If you are looking to build a business based on the goal of developing a residual income just be aware that there are many people who will take your dream and sell it back to you but their motives may well be selfish. The goal of residual income is worthy and worth striving for but there are many charlatans out there who will tell you this is the way to do it - or do it this way. There are companies who promote themselves based upon their income or pay plans. The truth is that none of them have a sustainable way to help you to grow a secure and sustainable income based around a workable plan. Watch the video, We've Lost The Plot Part 1 to see more.

My first bit of advice is find something that you can believe in - I knew that I couldn't sell something with any integrity that I couldn't see making a real difference to people. Yes money makes a difference but if that's all that is at stake then I'm off - money in itself does not motivate me on its own.

The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson

Throughout my life i continually come accross people who display a very common trait. The people I'm talking about are those that are focussed no getting the 'big break'. They are in every area of life, business, politics, medicine, authors, the lottery, dieters and church. The list could probably be endless. The belief comes from deep within us and sadly is feb by society, the media and self development books and gurus. The 'big breakthrough' or the 'Quantum leap' in terms of performance and results are likely to lead to disappointment. As an unpaid 'business mentor' I repetedly come across the bright energetic businessman, interestingly very few women display this characteristic, who sees a great product or opportunity and immediately starts planning for the big deal and ignores the smaller business that is invariably much closer to home and far easier to win. The path to success doesn't depend on big shifts but many more small repeated steps. This site is about learning the success that small steps repeated daily can bring.

The internet is growing so fast that it is difficult to find the information you are looking for quickly even if you are a skilled researcher it might take you hours to find the right information about a specific item you are looking for and that might require you to search through several thousands of pages.
The future of the internet is in breaking down the information into very small niche subject areas and that's where squidoo comes into its own.
Each squidoo page is a small site all on it's own which should talk about a very narrow subject or niche. The narrower you make it the better it is in my opinion. You should position yourself as the expert in your chosen niche.

His book Rich Dad Poor Dad is a seminal work which concentrated my mind on where money goes and where it comes from and even more importantly - how can I make more and hold onto more so that I can give more to those who really need it.
The subject of money management, in these days of economic hardship, is one that should be taught to even the youngest school child. We have seen the cripling probelms of debt at the personal, national and international levels and we must do something to change the fundamentals.
This site is all about what we can do.

crohns - simple tips that may help

Crohn's disease is a condition where the digestive tract becomes highly inflamed because of a number of areas where the body is not able to function as designed.
I make no apologies for the picture Chrohn's disease is a severe inflammation of the bowel and this is what it looks like.

I have grouped these pages into 3 areas so it is easier to navigate through them by broad subject area.
1. health or human environment
2. natural environment
3. making/saving money

I love educating people and researching new things. I love researching areas that i know little about but am critically aware that communicating what we have learned is just as important. How many times have you come across a brilliant acedemic schollar only to find that they are unable to communicate ideas simply to those who are listening. Clear, effective communication is something I strive for.

help for diabetes

Diabetes is a debilitating illness that affects and blights so many people and the number is growing exponentially. This lens is born out of personal experience and the strong desire not to become a diabetic myself. That's a very personal thing because every one of my father's brothers and sister and himself has diabetes. All are what used to be know as type 2 diabetes or mature onset but as you'll see in the sections below that definition is changing. This site is about helping people NOT to become diabetics.
with some very simple changes to diet and behaviour it is quite possible to avoid becoming diabetic and for those that are already reduce dependence on medication, with a Doctors support.

Business Labels

Label printing used to involve printing on sheets of labels and feeding them through our normal inkjet or laser printer. It was very difficult to set them up properly and very often I've ended up wasting a whole sheet because I got the alignment wrong or something on the label wasn't right. Either way label printing in any form was troublesome, costly and awkward. Printing on the envelopes directly was often even harder with feed problems and alignment errors.
The solution is now available for every home, desktop, office and business and is so easy it can be done by children. Labelling books, folders, jars, bottles, envelopes and parcels just got a whole lot simpler. The modern label printers make it so easy that you'll wonder how on earth you ever lived and worked without one before. If you can use a printer at home or in the office this is just as simple.
You can get pre-printed labels with your business logo and address on already in colour or you can put website details, email addresses, change of address labels. You can even use labels in place of business cards - just print out a few and put them in your wallet or handbag.

reducing water bills

Water is not a limitless commodity and consequently its is sold to us. As it becomes more scarce the simple laws of supply and demand work to push up prices. Now I know that is a bit of an oversimplification but it isn't far from the truth. However, costs are rising and there are some simple things we can all do that reduce the amount of water we have to pay for.

Raw Food Benefits In a closely monitored trial of 6 people with insulin dependant diabetes by adopting a raw food diet over 30 days - that means no meat, no dairy and eating foods close to the way nature made them. In 30 days each one was off Insulin, getting back to a normal weight, looking and feeling immeasurably better.

A Sugar That Protects Teeth!

Teeth are living cells and repair themselves continually. Constant exposure to sugary substances live sucrose or drinks like coke, lemonade etc all lead to damage that, if it gets severe enough can't be repaired. Xylitol has been used for some years in drinks and confectionery but now there is a new kid on the block. Trehalose has a low potential to create dental caries or tooth decay but it also has benefits in other areas as well - weight/fat issues/diabetes/sports performance.

ARE YOU SAFE ON THE INTERNET

In 2003 there were 6000 new viruses every week. They were looking to damage. Today the threat is very different. The goal today is to capture your personal details for very organised gangs to steal money on a huge scale.
Today less than 1% of cybercrime involves e mail viruses. So how does it happen - read on below and I'll tell you.
If you are relying on anti-virus software alone you are very exposed and the risk is huge.

Credit Cards - Myths and Truth

The legends that grow up around credit cards aren't quite as easy for the average person to research and refute. Credit card issuers can be pretty close lipped about their practices, and even those who proclaim themselves experts in the field can get it wrong.
So I talked to spokespeople from Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover to get the scoop on their policies, and with Fair Isaac, creators of the FICO credit score, for details on how cards really affect your score.

A man is stuck in traffic. He asks a police officer about the hold-up and he replies: "The head of the Bank Of England is so depressed about the economy he's stopped his car and is threatening to douse himself with petrol and set himself on fire. So we're taking up a collection for him." The man asks: "How much have you got so far?" The policeman replies: "About 40 gallons, but a lot of people are still siphoning."
