Professor Muhammad Yunus

Professor Yunus was born in 1940 in Bangladesh. He came from a large family of 14 children. His parents were well to do and encouraged them to pursue their education. Dr. Yunus was very much influenced by his mom as how to treat poor people. When he was an economy teacher, he started an experiment by lending tiny amounts of money to some village women. Soon after, he could see that the women were doing very well and he continued to do his work with them. In 1983, he established the Grameen Bank, meaning "village bank". The bank has helped thousands and thousands of extremely poor women from Bangladesh come out of destitution. Grameen Bank now has more than 2,000 branches, and employs more than 20,000 people, and has loaned more than $6 billion since its humble beginning.

Dr.William Larimer Mellon

There are a lot of rich people out in this world that are very selfish, arrogant and totally unaware of the rest of the world. They live in their own little world of opulence and have no regard for the suffering of the humanity. No so with Dr. Mellon. William Larimer Mellon and his wife Gwen were living the good life on their ranch in Arizona when they vistied Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Africa. They were so enthralled by what Dr. Schweitzer was doing that they decided to prepare themselves to devote their life to the health care of poor people. They went back to school and when they graduated, they decided to open a hospital in Haiti. The Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti has been serving the local people for over 50 years and is still thriving thanks to groups of concerned fundraisers that help to keep the place working.

In this lens, we will pay tribute to some remarkable people who tirelessly help the people who have no place to call home. As the french say "les sans abris". We obviously can not mention everyone of the volunteers but we will try to profile a few in order to give you some incentive to read further on the subject. USDA Photo by: Dorothea Lange

When Erin Gruwell began to teach as a high school English teacher in Long Beach, California, she didn't know what was in store for her. She was given a class of "unteachables"youth with gang rivalry mentality and racism. She finally got through them after months of persistence. The young students finally turned around and it was the beginning of a fascinating journey for all of them. Erin got her students interested in reading and writing. Her students called themselves "The Freedom Writers". All of them have graduated from high school and have attended college. Erin Gruwell is a motivational speaker who brings her message to students, teachers, and business people around the world. She resides in southern California What a wonderful success story!
