The next best thing to 80s television shows were 80s commercials - imaginative, creative, memorable and sometimes flat out bizarre: this decade of commercials was a menagerie of out-of-the-box thinking combined with a mastery of traditional advertising techniques, celebrity influences, and special effects. Really bad special effects.

Fads

Dictionary.com describes it as "a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., esp. one followed enthusiastically by a group" - but what does it mean to you? A collectible? Clothing style you wore (but now dread having done so?) Fads are an interesting part of pop culture, as they help shape and define it. We started to see their biggest relevance in the 1970s and 80s - both of which decades had its highly memorable ones (from the Pet Rock and Tie-Dye shirts to the Rubik's Cube and Slap Bracelet). We shuffled past Cabbage Patch Dolls, Beanie Babies, Pogs and the re-emergence of the Yo-Yo. What's next and upcoming in this strange consumer subculture? Fads are usually conceptualized on a whim, and gain widespread attention as they profoundly effect masses of people in a distinct way. Some more recent examples include Pogs from the mid 1990s, and the Tamagotchi virtual pet games from that same time period. Later, card series like Pokemon, Monster Rancher and Digimon took the world by storm, and still do to this very day. Fads have been known to influence clothing and accessories as well. In the 1980s, a plastic craze seemed to take over, with products such as Jellies, neon plastic and glitter bracelets, and glow-in-the-dark jewelry. Clothing such as parachute pants, Cavariccis, Wayfarer Sunglasses, Bolo ties and Skids gained popularity, up and into the early 90s.

The Incredible Hulk is a comic book character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and is part of the Marvel comic universe, first appearing in 1962. Aliased as Dr. Bruce Banner, he is a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde fashioned character who appears after Dr. Banner becomes angry - effectively shape-shifting his body into the green-skinned Hulk. The Hulk has superhuman powers, and can bend metal and pick up great amounts of weight with ease. In addition, he is seemingly impervious to bullet and missile attacks, only becoming stronger and more ferocious as he keeps getting angrier. Once the Hulk becomes calm, he once again reverts back to the form of Dr. Banner. The Hulk is one of Marvel Comics' most legendary characters, bringing about a great deal of merchandising and video game applications. It first came to TV in 1978, as a live-action series starring Bill Bixby and and Lou Ferrigno. The series returned in 1982, and then again in 1996 as two separate Incredible Hulk animated television series. The feature length Incredible Hulk film Directed by Ang Lee and starring Eric Bana debuted in 2003, and its sequel is slated for release on June 13, 2008.

Capcom is a game publishing and development firm based in Osaka, Japan, and is most famous for game titles such as the Street Fighter series, Marvel vs. Capcom, Mega Man and Final Fight. The company was founded in 1979 and released its first game, Vulgus, in 1984. The company's name is a combination of the words "Capsule" and "Computers." Capcom's popularity exploded in the 1990s, and is most famous for its extremely distinct style of video game composition and cinematics; by introducing characters jam-packed with personality, throwing in a dose of anime drama, and capturing the true action spirit of the arcade that compells you to keep inserting quarters. It had several notable series which almost became synonymous with its brand name; notably the "fighter" genre, which led to numerous ripoffs - none of which could barely hold a candle to Capcom's original excellence.
