Vintage Tupperware Collecting

Tupperware (r) is an American institution, both because it epitomizes the promise of "plastics" and because the company created the Tupperware Party. At Tupperware parties, the "Tupperware Ladies" (remember the song?) demonstrated the latest and greatest new bowls, kitchen tools and even toys (like the Zoo-It-Yourself toy pictured.) Guaranteed to last forever and ever without chipping, cracking, peeling or breaking, vintage and new Tupperware is still in use in kitchens across America.

Tiffin-Franciscan King's Crown-Cranberry Flashed Glassware is a versatile pattern that will work with a wide range of decors. A variety of serving and accessory pieces are available King's Crown, also known as "Thumbprint" was made by Tiffin, a Steubenville, Ohio glass firm, which started when A. J. Beatty and Sons, built a large glassworks in Tiffin, Ohio in 1888. In 1892, the firm merged with the U.S. Glass Company. During the mid-teens, Tiffin's master craftsmen began producing delicately etched, cut and blown stemware and dinnerware patterns in clear and colored crystal.

Extemporaneous Speaking

Whether it's Table Topics at Toastmasters, or the state finals for your high school speech team, for serious speech and debate competititors, little rivals the challenge of the so-called "limited preparation" events. Although over the years, additional forms of competition, such as commentary, evaluation, and impromptu speaking have joined Extemporaneous Speaking or "Extemp" in this category, the Extemp tournament is likely to include the top speakers at speech tournaments. Unlike the dark ages when I competed in "Girls'" Extemp in Iowa, today's students compete against speakers of both genders in most tournaments. Despite the categorization as "limited preparation" there are definitely ways to prepare for success in Extemp competition. This lens will point you in the right direction.

Fishing Lure Collection

It started with a muddy old tacklebox that was virtually buried behind old plasticware and pans on the bottom shelf at the back of the second hand store. Its tag read $4, but it was blue, which meant half price that day. Recollections of hearing about a single fishing lure fetching a five figure price on eBay came to mind, so I put the box on the little rack under the basket of my shopping cart to add to the day's purchases. Fortunately, I had a small cardboard box in my trunk, which protected the carpet and, as it turned out, was also helpful for catching small lead sinkers. Given the condition of the tackle box, it took a while for me to mention it to my husband and a little longer for him to decide he wanted to open it. The day after he finally did, he suggested we find some price guides for fishing lures. We thought it would be fun to share our research about the fishing lure collection we found...

Collecting items from the kitchens of the past can be a fun and rewarding hobby. There are numerous opportunities to uncover forgotten gadgets and gizmos that gave the modern kitchens of the 1920's, 30's or 40's their distinctive look, as well as opportunities to re-create the kitchens we grew up with, whether in the 50's, 60's, 70's or 80's.

A Fortune in Your Spare Change?

Recently, error coin collectors paid hundreds of dollars for certain Wisconsin State Quarters which contained one of two errors ("Up-leaf and down-leaf") Error coins are sought by collectors and can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Check auction sites for examples. I am not in the business of coin authentication, just an average person looking for a lucky error coin or two among the quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies received in my change. I found that there are tons of sites in search results that don't really help people like me identify these rarities, so I put together this lens with some sites that will really help in your quest for that elusive error. Expand the Lens Contents link on the right to quickly find sections of this lens. ===>

Several times a year, the planet Mercury enters a transit known as "retrograde." Mercury Retrograde (or Rx) occurs when Mercury appears to be moving backwards in the sky. During Mercury Retrograde, communications and travel are likely to feel like they are moving in slow motion, or even backward. Mercury also rules machines like computers, so it's always a good idea to make sure your computers are all backed up before Mercury Rx! (Of course, you do back up regularly, anyway, right?) If it seems like Mercury Rx is ruining your month, try going with the flow. Rather than fighting the slowdown, use it productively to re-visit past projects and tie up loose ends. Rather than dreading Mercury Rx, you may learn to look forward to it!

The Electoral College

Rather than allow citizens to vote directly for its leaders, the founders of the US created the Electoral College, a group similar to the Centurial Assembly system of the Roman Republic, which used a representative delegate to vote for different areas.

Today, the role of the electoral college has been widely debated, with some saying it is no longer necessary, and others arguing for its preservation as part of our election process.

As US taxpayers, we fund a massive IT undertaking that has grown into a massive amount of free information--The Online resources of the US Federal Government. In this era of increased debate over pending issues, this is one source that tells the straight story on pending legislation, since you can read the actual bills and laws as written. You can also write your representatives in Washington using links from these sites. Another benefit of government digital initiatives is the breadth of information for business users that can be accessed for free. Start here when researching.
