Learn to Build a Cobb House

Cobb homes are a awesome alternative for people with land but not much of a budget.
Cobb Homes are very energy frugal and sturdy.; Be sure to check local regulations and zoning before building.
Cobb homes have been used for thousands of years, I can't wait to build my first Cobb House, it will be small probably like a 15x15 foot just so I can learn the process correctly.; I will turn that into a storage shed after I build a larger Cobb House on the property.

Cobb houses can be made of mud and straw as I build some small scale models I will take pictures.; Not only are Cobb houses cheap to build they are also very energy efficient .; By combining energy saving and low initial cost your return on investment can be as low as 2-5 years. Your key investment in your Cobb House will be time and labor.
Update I met a local Farmer who might trade Bails of hay for vegetables and berries.; Looks like I will build my small scale Cobb House this spring.; Update way to much rain Cobb house is going up next year just a small 10x10 Cobb House but it will be fun, dry and will last for hundreds of years I plan on adding additions as I go with the main Cobb House being about 25x25.. You can also build Cobb Houses for storage, I will be building a Cobb House specifically designed to house my battery setup for alternative power..

To avoid zoning problems I will keep the storage Cobb buildings less then ten feet by ten feet. This is usually the largest size you can build without a permit make sure to check your local area before you build your Cobb House

Sustainable Gardening Non-Profit changing the world one garden at a time.

I use the Mittleider method of sustainable organic gardening The Mittleider method is taught by the gardening Non-Profit Food for Everyone Foundation. Over the years I have saved tens of thousands of dollars just by growing my own vegetables, berries, and root crops. At times if it was not for the garden I would have gone hungry. This lens is dedicated to Jim Kennard and all the hard work he does at the Food for Everyone Foundation.
The Food for Everyone Foundation is a Non-Profit organization that travels the world teaching people in impoverished areas how to grow gardens which will yield five to ten times more than traditional gardening methods.
Perhaps the most beneficial and rewarding aspect of this organic gardening method is that it allows a family to feed themselves and earn a highly important income.; This income is many times reinvested into a larger garden the following years.; This continuous cycle of investment is one of the aspects the Foundation is most proud of.
In a majority of cases these original Mittleider gardeners then teach their fellow village members to Mittleider method. This is a classic example of our ;Pay it forward; goals.

Goal: To ;live off the land; and produce a great income using the Food for Everyone Foundation method of Grow-Box and Grow-Bed gardening. Gardens using the Foundation method grow five to ten times the yield of traditional gardens. I am going to donate 30% of the food grown to the local food pantry and we also have a Food Bank in the area that can use some fresh vegetables.and fruit.

As part of your Business Plan add in helping gardening Non-Profits around the world, this is a great way to Network with other people in the gardening business and also make some life time friends.
How to build a row cover for a garden.

Row covers are easy to build, basically you create a curved or square frame running the length of your garden bed. The material I use is PVC pipe which I bend using a jig.; You simply measure; your curved distance; from one side of the bed to the other.; Mine are 18 inches wide and I want the top of the covers to be 18 inches.; So you multiply 18 times three and add an additional 8 inches so the PVC pipe can extend 4 inches into the ground each side.;

My over all goal is to be off grid 100% over the next three years.I am planning for the spring of 2013; This lens is for some of the best homesteading resources on the net.
Learning to maximize everything on your homestead is very important to your long term homestead success.; It is fun to be a frugal homesteader and you are also helping the environment by recycling everything possible.; A prosperous homestead will be both financially and environmentally sound.for future generations
I would not call myself a survivalist but rather I do not like to depend on others for my basic survival needs.; We all have gone through economic ups and downs, my goal is to provide my basic, food, water, clothing, shelter and income via my Homestead.; I will maximize every old school advantage which is both available and affordable.; I have started to break down each process and documenting it with lenses.;

I use the Mittleider method of organic gardening this method provides five-ten times the yield of a traditional garden and this is important to my Homesteads long term success.

I like Ford Mustangs myself along with Corvette.; My goal is to create enough money to start my own little Muscle Car museum.; There is a great show on TV called Wrecks to Riches.; This profiles taking an old muscle car and rebuilding it from darn near nothing in about 10 - 12 weeks.
The show is based on Barry Whites speed shop
Great news the show got picked up for 2010, lets see what they build this year.;

HEY BARRY
I have TWO 1967 Ford Tbirds with 429 Engines AND
a 1967 Mustang (six cylinder )
SUPER clean they have been stored in a dry clean garage for over 20 years. Lets talk, perhaps even a show about the 67 Tbunderbirds.

A hotbed is simply a cold frame with a heat source underneath it.; There are a variety of heat sources to choose from these include electric, wood and for this example manure.; The only disadvantage of this method is you have to clean it out and add fresh manure once a year. On the plus side it is free
I use a hot bed which has Southern exposure..

A sustainable vegetable garden means one that can be sustained over time, and would necessarily involve
I) growing food you want to eat, so you are motivated to continue growing,
II) growing economically, so that it is worthwhile doing, as well as taking care of environmental issues, so that the ground will continue to support growing.
I use the Food for Everyone Foundations (Mittleider method) of sustainable gardening.; Called The poor mans hydroponics; the Mittleider method puts the 13 trace nutrients into the soil; all plants need these same nutrients.

The beauty of the method is
1. 5-10 times the yields of a traditional garden,
2 Uses approx.seventy percent of the water,
3 You only use Sixty percent of the space of a traditional garden
4 No animal waste is used to put nutrients into the soil ,
5 No pesticides are used to control insects

I like my veggies clean and disease free.;

Micro Hydro electric power

Alternative energy is the only way to go to break our dependence on foreign oil. Micro hydro power is becoming more affordable as time goes by.; I like to try things out small first and build upon the power grid by linking multiple power sources to power everything.
Micro hydro power can be used year round if you live in a warm climate and have constant water flow.
One thing I am always interested in is scalability of the hydro systems. One key to all of my alternative energy sources is the ability to add on, this is a unique situation with Hydro power as you need the water flow.; Hydro power is still a very viable alternative energy source and pricing on micro hydro just keeps coming down
Low flow technology is also getting less expensive. I am also working on a multiple level Hydro Power system, with it I will be able reuse the flow of the water multiple times. I will use the hillside to my advantage, simple techniques like this multiplied will provide free power to my homestead.

We are looking at Micro Hydro Power systems for a very old friend I showed him how it can power a cabins lights and they are in. When you build your Alternative Energy systems always think from the perspective of what you have to power.

For example one Micro Hydro Power system can power x amounts of lights of the Micro Power system can Power, charge my Laptop and charge the batteries at (X) rate. In this way you can build your Micro Hydro Power system to be scalable.

A key point with anything is you must build a standardized scalable system.

TFrames are an excellent way to extend your growing season and support your plants. With proper construction you can also create mini green houses to extend your season even longer.With Tframes you can create mini-greenhouses for each soilbed/row of your garden. Your Tframes will last many years and you should recoup your minimal investment in 4x4's the first year. Every year after that is pure profit. I anticipate adding at least eight -ten weeks to my growing season using Tframes and 6 mil clear plastic as my greenhouse shell.
Note if you would like to see my Tframes you can check them out below in the week 6 progress video.

How to Preserve your Vegetable crops

Everyone should be working to save your harvest correctly, either by storing or preserving. Canning, drying, and freezing, are good ways of preserving your crops such as beans, corn, peas, peppers, summer squash, and tomatoes. They need to be done immediately after picking, while crops are fresh and tasty. Whether you cold-store or preserve your produce depends on the type of food you have grown, your facilities, and your family;s eating preferences.
Cold storage of vegetables such as cabbage, beets, carrots, potatoes, squash, and turnips can give you the best tasting and healthiest food of the four methods, and may even be the least expensive in the long run. And you can eat every one of these garden-fresh even 4 to 6 months after they have been harvested! This requires some careful preparation, so let;s discuss how best to prepare for and store your fall harvest.

Remember grow what your family will eat, please donate or preserve the rest do not let good healthy vegetables go to waste.

Over the past six years I have used the Mittleider method of gardening. It has been a blessing financially and from a health standpoint. Over the years I have had the pleasure to get to know Jim Kennard the President of the Non-Profit Food For Everyone Foundation which teaches the Mittleider method.
All the videos are from My Mittleider garden in my backyard. I am having a great time and highly recommend the Mittleider method, I get between 4-7 times the yield of a traditional garden. You will see in the videos below how I created my soil beds and grew vertically.

I look at intensive as the wrong phrase rather I would think maximized or sustainable gardening is more accurate.; You are making the most of what you have in your garden when you have it.;
;Plant in the smallest area possible while still giving the plants enough light.; Add in Mittleider nutrients so the plants can spend their time growing instead of seeking out what little nutrients the soil MIGHT have in it.
With the Mittleider method we balance nutrients, watering and weeding.; You can expect yields 5-10 times greater in less space which allows you to use less water
With the Mittleider method we also focus on growing as many crops vertically as possible, this allows for maximum light air flow and use of space.
I use the Mittleider method and invite you to check out my videos below.

Many people arrive at the end of the gardening season and wish they planned their vegetable garden better. Often there is wasted space, and sometimes we have grown things that were not used, and perhaps couldn't even be given away. The key is the first year to plant what you and your family will eat Another tip plant some root crops, garlic, potatoes, onions these will keep for a long time as long as you keep them in a cool dry place.;
You can usually store your vegetables in the basement.; Make sure the vegetables are up off the ground in a cool dry area which has some air flow.;Join the Food for Everyone Foundation Clickbank affiliate program earn 40% of every sale Purchase the Mittleider digital organic gardening books.

I tried breaking up 1 tablet of Asprin and dipping the end of the cutting as a root hormone and it worked, however I am going to just grab some root hormone at a local nursery, it will be more reliable. Lilacs are best dried and make great winter gifts bring the scent of spring into your gifts and pillows with dried lilacs.; Join the Food for Everyone Foundation Clickbank affiliate program earn 40% of every sale Purchase the Mittleider digital gardening books

Feeding plants correctly

A fundamental question in Vegetable Gardening is - what is the proper use of organic and/or chemical materials? Let;s determine the truth of the matter, with four basic principles and a few brief examples from Dr. Jacob R. Mittleider;s worldwide experience. We are sometimes called the Poor mans hydroponics because we place the thirteen nutrients each plant needs into the soil
From A-Z if it is a plant it needs all the same 13 nutrients. Why spend the huge costs on a Hydroponics system when the Mittleider method provides the exact same nutrients for MUCH less the other similar products.

I just started getting into harvesting Heirloom Seeds, this year I will harvest tomato, melon, pepper and cucumber seeds.;
;The basic way to harvest seeds from a tomato is to scoop the seeds out put them in a cup of water and let them sit for a few days. At this point the good seeds will sink to the bottom and the bad ones and the pulp will go to the surface.; Scoop out the pulp and the bad heirloom seeds with a spoon.; Add some fresh water and let sit another day then carefully drain the water.; Pour the seeds onto a paper towel and pat dry.; Then place the seeds on a new dry sheet of paper towel and put in a dry place for a few days.; Make sure to label the seeds and either put them in envelopes or even better store them in airtight jars in a cabinet till use.
Peppers are even easier, just cut them open and tap the seeds out on to a piece of paper towel you can soak them for a day also and dry and store.
Melons are similar simply pick the seeds out wash them off and pat them dry then store.
With each plant make sure they are Heirloom plants and Not Hybrids.;
Hybrids will not reproduce exactly the same because they are usually a cross between two or more Plants of the same variety..
Though it takes a bit more work Heirloom seeds are fun to harvest Just try harvesting some Giant sunflower seeds with the kids, it is fun and educational.

When they see or hear the word ;homesteading; or ;homesteader; most people think immediately of the western expansion and settling of the United States.; In fact, many think of the word in connection with a western movie. ;Is is entirely natural as homesteading was one of the principal ways in which the west was settled in the early 1900s.; It was possible for a family, starting out with hardly any money but willing to work very hard, to wind up owning a piece of farm land that they could then pass down to their children.; My goal is to build a mini Homestead, Internet income is a important part of my long term strategy.. Some people ask me Steve what if the Internet goes down? Then he hired outstanding illustrators, plus several of the most highly skilled PhD’s in Educational Technology and Psychology that he could find to help him turn it into a masterpiece. The process took several years , but Jacob wanted one book that would be easy to understand and use, would work for gardens in any soil (or container!), and could be used by people in any country or language. He wanted the methods taught to be “bullet proof” and work great for EVERYONE, no matter where they were or what their gardening experience was.

If you're new to 'prepping' and wondering where in the world to begin, or you've been at it awhile and would like to review the basics and go over your planning, this email will be one of the most important you've ever read.
Let me explain why: I've recently re-discovered a book first written in 1974 by James Talmage Stevens entitled, "Making the Best of Basics--Family Preparedness Handbook." This best-seller is now in its 12th edition and has been re-written for a generation even further and more remotely separated from the skills of the pioneers from America's frontier.
In the book, Mr. Stevens draws on more than 36 years in the family preparedness industry and shares many personal experiences on how anyone--regardless of experience--can put together an effective plan for personal and family preparedness.

Walnut seeds won't germinate immediately when planted because they
are in a dormant state, and you must break their dormancy before the
seed can germinate. Both scarification and stratification are
required to break a walnut seed;s dormant state, for germination to
occur.
The black walnut;s dormancy is caused by the thick, hard seed coat.

This is the first step necessary to break the Black walnut seed's dormancy. A
metal file or coarse sandpaper can be used, but is difficult and
time consuming, unless you have a power sander.

Yellow Pear Tomato

The Yellow Pear Tomato is excellent in salads and also to make drinks from.; Plant your seeds 1/4 inch deep.; After about 10 days the seedlings should emerge.; The ideal germination temperature is 70-80 degrees (F). ;It is best to start the Yellow pears about seven weeks before transplanting to the outside.; As with all plants let the Yellow Pear Tomato plants spend a few day out doors, but bring them in each night.. After a week it is ok to plant outside.; The Yellow Pear Tomato will be ready to harvest&;in about 75 days.;Yellow Pear Tomatoes also grow very well in planters, being a bush tomato plant it is sometimes easier to control growth in a planter also.; Once they start producing tomatoes it looks like a natural work of art by mother nature.
I am super excited about this years Mittleider garden

I live at the base of the Adirondacks mountains it is a beautiful area.; Be sure to check out Saratoga also. A trip to The Saratoga battlefield is a great way to teach the kids about our countries history. The battlefield is a registered historic landmark.; Decades ago I used to travel the field daily as a shortcut for work, On Friday nights I would hang out for a few there is a Farmhouse (bemis heights) where a major battle took place. It was nice back then you could travel for free in the park and the police were cool.; Great place to visit just make sure you pay your respects at night.

I like to experiment, this is for next year, I am in zone 4-5 for I am going to build a low cost mini greenhouse like 5x5 and add to the heat with natural straw. One of my first plants will be the Goji Berry. There are many stores online and off you can buy Goji Berry juice. It can be a bit expensive so check around. Also check to make sure you are buying fresh Goji berry juice versus juice made from concentrate. I have been using Goji berry juice for the last 30 days and my energy is up and I just feel better, hard to explain but this juice woks. Join the Food for Everyone Foundation Click Bank affiliate program earn 40% of every sale Purchase the Mittleider method sustainable gardening digital books and manuals Buy Vegetable Seeds Now for Huge Spring Crops.

Roma Tomato

Roma tomatoes are great for paste and sauces, one great things about tomatoes is that you can just pour in a variety to make a great ;sauce
Plant the Roma seed about 1/4 inch deep, water and put in a sunny warm area.; In about 7-10 days the seedling will emerge.; As with all tender plants acclimate the plants to the outside over a week period before you plant them in the garden.; Plant each seedling about 14 inches apart, although the Roma is a determinate variety (meaning you only harvest once) in about 75 days you will have a large crop.; I use the Mittleider nutrients and have great success.
Roma tomatoes are an excellent all around paste tomato but can also be sliced for salads or make some tomato soup out of Roma tomatoes;

I am just starting to grow vegetables on a larger scale, I do not think I will make the Farmers market this year but this will be a good reference point for next year.
Update I have located the local Farmers Markets a bit expensive but I am going to sell at at least one Farmers Market per week next year.

The beauty of the FFEF method aka Mittleider method of gardening is the 5-10 times yields, use of space and frugal use of water. I am building a series of Tframes so I can greatly extend this seasonn.; To jump start the season next year I created a cold frame built out of material I had on hand.Join the Food for Everyone Foundation Click bank affiliate program earn 40% of every salePurchase the Mittleider digital organic gardening books.;

Landscaping not only increases the value of your home it is also great for your waistline. I do par time landscaping for fun and help out some friends with projects. Its always good for a cold brew and a hot dinner. Landscaping is one of the easiest ways to increase the value of your property. If you use Mittleider nutrients for your plants you can guarantee lush, healthy plants. People refer to it as "Curb appeal" one of the easiest ways to increase the value of your property is to clean up the outside, lay some fresh sod and some colorful flowers. I use biodegradable weed block when I initially lay out an area to work on. Your best bet is to clear any area before putting the weed block down. If you can not do this then you better be prepared to purchase a great deal of wood chips. Landscaping is both fun and profitable. Please rank this lens and add to your favorites. Thank you very much.

There is nothing like going out for a night of 8ball and a few beers throw some foosball, darts and great music and you are set. One thing to remember is some pool and billiard leagues have slight variations on the standard rules. These are sometimes called House rules. The best way to learn pool is to play as simple as that sounds that is how it works. Get out there and rack them up. My favorite poolhall http://www.trickshotbilliardsny.com/

Mittleider student and teacher

Jim said"I was uniquely privileged to know and work closely with Dr. Jacob R. Mittleider during the last 30 years of his life.

Dr. Mittleider taught me the gardening principles and procedures that made him so highly respected and sought after around the world that he received PhD's from Universities on four continents!

I worked one-on one with him in his garden, as well as my own. And 20 years ago, when he was satisfied that I would represent him well, he allowed me to put his name on my 1/2 acre "Utah's Hogle Zoo Garden", which is seen by more than 800,000 people each year as they visit the giraffe exhibit."
