Turns out that perfect scrambled eggs are not so hard to make and come with a bonus: easy clean-up ... even without a nonstick pan! Twilight Dream Team

This is my "dream team" for Twilight characters, the way I see them when I read the books (along with trivia & vital stats for each). A few are actually from the movie, where they cast someone who is just as I pictured, but in most cases ... I was not so happy. I read the books just before they began casting, so I had a firm picture in my head before I ever saw the actors cast for the movie. It seems that in most cases matching the actors physically to their descriptions in the book went out the window; it can't be that hard to do, as movies such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter did a splendid job of matching actors to characters. Not to mention little annoyances like the fact that since their hair doesn't grow, the vampires would pretty much have the hairstyles of a bygone era, not modern 'dos (although that's not a casting gripe so much as a costuming gripe). A few characters I am still looking for that perfect face so in the meanwhile I may or may not have a "still better than the movie" face as placeholder, but rest assured I'm looking for the whole cast. The statistics and trivia on the characters comes either directly from the books or from Stephenie Meyer's personal correspondence or website. It does a good job of popularizing the Tudor period, and the sets and costuming are beautiful, but whether it is more fact than fiction is debatable. It is true that there are few facts known about Anne Boleyn's early life, and even fewer about her sister Mary, but this movie manages to contradict most of those that are known. This lens addresses only the places where the movie version contradicts the known or widely-agreed-upon facts. It is not a comprehensive history, nor a review of the book.

A seaworthy replica of Noah's Ark, built to approximately one-half of the size specifications given in the Old Testament, has been constructed by Dutch carpenter Johan Huibers. Inside life-size statues of elephants and giraffe greet the visitors, a small theater showing a film on the life of Noah is tucked under the keel, and the nearly finished top deck will soon house a petting zoo with lambs, chickens, goats, and a camel. No way to keep the purchase of three wigs within budget, so I knew I would have to make them myself. I'd made a yarn wig for a handmade doll once, but that was more time-consuming than I wanted, and I didn't know how I would make the side curls needed for a proper footman's wig. Googling around, I saw some people trying to do it with toilet paper rolls, but I just couldn't see that turning out well. Stephenie Meyer released the first chapter of Midnight Sun online for her fans. Unfortunately, shortly before the Twilight movie was released, someone leaked a draft copy of the first twelve chapters online. This has stalled and possibly halted the completion of Midnight Sun since Stephenie was very upset by the leak from a trusted source, one of just a few people she had shared the manuscript with. "What happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being," she said in a statement after the leak. She went ahead and put the twelve-chapter draft version on her website so that her fans would not have to feel guilty about searching it out online. The first twelve chapters of Midnight Sun, in draft form, were leaked online. As she had sent the draft to only a few trusted friends, Ms. Meyer naturally felt betrayed at the leak and found herself unable to continue writing the book, at least as of now. She has made the draft copy of Midnight Sun available on her site so that fans don't have to feel guilty searching for the pirated copy, but is very disappointed that they are reading an unfinished, unpolished draft copy. The leak of the first twelve draft chapters of Midnight Sun, the fifth book in the Twilight Saga, was a dreadful betrayal of Stephenie Meyer as the author and friend who brought us the Twilight Saga. I totally understand - though I am very disappointed - that she feels unable to complete the book at this time. Putting on the play Alice in Wonderland requires a lot of flower costumes! As the costume mistress in charge of the flowers, I had to come up with six flower headpieces that were different, quick and easy to make, inexpensive, and sturdy enough to handle several productions by our homeschool theater group. I didn't want to simply make petals around the face in different colors, but rather recognizably different flowers. This particular tall flower headpiece could work as a larkspur, foxglove, gladiolus, hollyhock, or other tall stem with multiple flowers, but it is quite simple to make!

A haboob is a giant dust storm caused by the strong downdraft in front of a storm. This wall of sand or dust that precedes the storm can be sixty miles wide. Precipitation often evaporates in the hot, dry air, but if it reaches ground level it causes a mud storm instead of a dust storm. The word haboob is from the Arabic and means "strong wind." A haboob of massive proportions developed from a storm collapsing near Tucson on July 5, 2011, and covered a huge portion of Arizona, moving northward from Tucson to Phoenix and engulfing both cities. This enormous haboob was at least a mile high and 100 miles wide, with wind gusting over 60 miles per hour. Why homeschool? I homeschool my four children for a variety of reasons - any one of which would be ample reason on its own, in my books! But this is the story of why the thought of homeschooling first occurred to me, and why I followed up on it, since the reasons that followed, though valid, did not weigh in at first. My saga differs considerably from any other "why I homeschool" story I've heard, not least in the fact that I chose homeschool years before I had children. With a degree in elementary education, I think I bring something of a different perspective to the debate on the homeschooling choice and the reasons to choose home school. I hope that the story of my journey will help answer questions from those who are considering homeschool (or from those who think it is a poor choice!) in addition to bolstering the confidence of those who have already chosen the homeschool journey with their families.

The Incredible Hulk has become a phenomenon on Twitter.com. Much like the Chuck Norris jokes that abound everywhere, suddenly Twitter is rife with multiple accounts purporting to be from Hulks, each with a specific point of view. One thing the accounts have in common is all caps and angry, terse tweets with the poor grammar structure we all associate with the Hulk from comic books, television, and the movies. Most of them incorporate a good deal of humor, which is of course the entire point of a twitter account like this! Some seem to be real twitter accounts, with the author writing personally but in Hulkish language; others are true Hulk spoofs and tweet only on their spoof topic (like Hamlet Hulk). There are more Hulk twitter accounts than I could possibly find and catalog. And, frankly, some of them aren't that funny. Others are very funny and retweet-worthy. Alan Baker's "Little Rabbit" series of books are some of my daughter's absolute favorites, and they are books I don't get tired of reading to her. The illustrations are beautiful and the simple, sweet stories are utterly charming. It's hard to find a fresh and interesting way to present concept books (books that teach shapes, ABCs, a counting, etc) ... but Baker has done it. These concept books do not condescend to the intended audience but instead seem to enter into the simple joys of young life in a way that the audience - reader and readee alike - share comfortably with the author. Raw milk is real food! Science has yet to improve on the good food nature gives us. It tends to really screw things up when it tries ... saccharin, anyone? Milk is a food that has been consumed for most of human history, yet only in recent times, with science "improving" it through pasteurization and homogenization, have health troubles been the result. Even lactose-intolerant people can usually consume raw dairy, due to the proliferation of live enzymes residing within that help the body digest the food! Studies in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet proved that, contrary to popular and official government opinion, children drinking raw milk have fewer incidences of tuberculosis, not to mention less tooth decay as compared to children drinking pasteurized milk. So ... YES, WAY! Monkeybrain, the real food is real, raw milk!

HEY BABY BRAIN! Can a Woman Tell If She's Pregnant With a Boy or a Girl?

I don't know if there are any foolproof ways to predict the gender of a baby other than ultrasound ... except one. And it won't work on the first pregnancy! In my experience, most women tend to carry boys one way and girls another. For me, my two girls sat very high, causing severe shortness of breath and acid reflux, while my two boys both sat very low, wallowing on my bladder as it were, with predictable results. My sister was the opposite of me: her two girls rode low, and her son rode high. While from that short survey it doesn't seem to be that all women consistently carry boys low and girls high or vice versa, I've asked around among my friends and it does seem to be consistent for a woman to consistently carry her girls in one location, and the boys in the other, while another woman may be consistent in the other direction. I'm curious to know if that is true for other women, hence this debate lens. Please share your personal experience with the world! Thanks to Baby Crayons for the free clip art!

This lensography showcases what a sometimes-schizophrenic and sometimes-hyperfocused mind I have. Some lenses relate to others obsessively; many others are just random. That's me; what you see is what you get! For instance, right about the time I discovered Squidoo, I stumbled across a book series cleverly disguised as teen lit. Knowing that teen lit is often better than adult lit, I dove in and haven't really resurfaced yet. Most of my top-ranked lenses are the result of that little foray: my so-far ten lenses (EDIT: now seventeen!) on the Twilight Saga have yielded one Lens of the Day lens, four Top 100 lens, and several other lenses in and out of the Top 500. I made Giant Squid on April 7, 2009! At the same time, Homeschool Quotes - my first non-Twilight Top 100 lens - hit the Top Ten at #2 on the Squidoo charts! No, it's not on Stephenie Meyer's playlist for any of the Twilight books, but I keep thinking of this song when I think of Bella and Edward's romance, and I think of them when I hear the song. It references Romeo and Juliet as well as Superman and Lois Lane and a score of other historical lovers, and casually dismisses them saying, "I am not impressed / I love you the best." Doesn't that just sing of Edward and Bella to you? Remember Edward talking about Sam's imprinting on Emily ... "It is almost as strong as the way I feel about you." Besides, I think this picture of Charlie Sexton looks exactly like Edward. Absolutely spot on. So when I realized that this is the face I picture for Edward, and he also sings this song "Impressed" about a love that is stronger than Romeo and Juliet's, well, that just hit the high note for me. (Note that I don't think Edward looks like Charlie Sexton, but I do think Charlie sometimes looks like Edward.) "Riu Riu Chiu" is technically not a new Christmas song; it is a lovely new version of a relatively unknown old Spanish Christmas carol by Sixpence None the Richer from their Christmas album The Dawn of Grace. The phrase "riu riu chiu" in Spanish is like saying "twitter tweet chirp" in English: it is the traditional Spanish sound made by the nightingale. Sixpence None the Richer has reshaped the traditional Spanish carol, switching or shortening some verses, eliminating others altogether, and switching occasionally from Spanish into English. The result is a delicate, haunting melody. I have tried to put a translation of the Spanish verses below so you can get a sense of what they are singing. Sure, it's easy to find a phonics book that showcases the letter you are teaching. But who really wants to read a book like that? Believe me, if you don't find it entertaining, the kids probably don't either! It doesn't take much work to find a really good book that will highlight your letter. It could be a cool book about ants for "A," or a storybook that happens to emphasize the letter you are working on. Make sure it is a story first, not an educational text that tries to construct a storyline around the letter.

Which Narnian Chronicle Should Be Read First?

Recent reissues of The Chronicles of Narnia have numbered the books in chronological order rather than the order in which they were written and published. This is just plain wrong! Lucy stumbles into the wardrobe, unknowing and unknown by the first-time reader, and creates one of the most magical moments in literature. Knowing ahead of time that the wardrobe she approaches is probably the one that was made from the wood grown from the seeds of the fruit that came from Narnia, and therefore, sure, the wardrobe is a portal into Narnia, just strips that moment of all its wonderment. The Magician's Nephew, which is the first book in the chronological history of Narnia, explains away the magic! The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the first book written in the Narnia series, and the most magical, must be read before The Magician's Nephew. Unfortunately, recent publications number the series chronologically rather than in the order they were written and meant to be experienced.

As the angel in charge of the Education neighborhood "Great Teachers" I look at a lot of educational lenses. I joined Squidoo in March 2008 but didn't really do anything until July. My first lens climbed gratifyingly in the ratings, up to #602 in just two weeks (and #50 in its category Arts/Literature). I was wishing for a way to track my stats and happened across bdkz's stats page and decided to make one for myself, meager though it is at the moment. Anyway, the squidhook has caught me and I figure my kids are old enough to know how to cook for themselves ... right?
