Squidoo : Lenses by tandemonimom

As a homeschool mom, Carma has so much extra time on her hands she must look for ways to fill it creatively. Besides Squidoo, she doesn't have enough time for reading, scrapping, reading, knitting, writing, reading, and her LOL Teez tshirt blog & shops. In addition to reading (did she mention she enjoys reading?), she enjoys writing about herself in the third person.

How to Make Perfect Scrambled Eggs - WITHOUT a Nonstick Pan!

How do you get perfect, nonstick eggs without using a nonstick pan? Even with nonstick, are your eggs a gummy mess? I always wondered how chefs turned out such light, fluffy eggs, when my scrambles were always heavy and soggy.

Turns out that perfect scrambled eggs are not so hard to make and come with a bonus: easy clean-up ... even without a nonstick pan! And it is actually so simple; less work than your mom's way of making the soggy, congealed mess you grew up with.

Directions are given for scrambling eggs in stainless steel first (since that's a bit trickier) and also in cast iron.

But why would you want to use a regular pan when eggs are so easy to cook in nonstick pans? Learn a little more about the dangers of nonstick cookware and why you want to make the switch to stainless steel or cast iron while you perfect making scrambled eggs with no teflon!

But what can we drink to not simply settle the stomach, but also aid in recovery? Tummy Tea settles the unsettled stomach, restores the unbalanced electrolytes, rehydrates the body, and puts you a significant step down the road to recovery, being a healing whole-food drink. It even helps stop the unpleasant cycle of "something in, something out" that accompanies stomach flu or any serious stomach upset.

Twilight Dream Team

This is my "dream team" for Twilight characters, the way I see them when I read the books (along with trivia & vital stats for each). A few are actually from the movie, where they cast someone who is just as I pictured, but in most cases ... I was not so happy. I read the books just before they began casting, so I had a firm picture in my head before I ever saw the actors cast for the movie.

It seems that in most cases matching the actors physically to their descriptions in the book went out the window; it can't be that hard to do, as movies such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter did a splendid job of matching actors to characters. Not to mention little annoyances like the fact that since their hair doesn't grow, the vampires would pretty much have the hairstyles of a bygone era, not modern 'dos (although that's not a casting gripe so much as a costuming gripe).

A few characters I am still looking for that perfect face so in the meanwhile I may or may not have a "still better than the movie" face as placeholder, but rest assured I'm looking for the whole cast.

The statistics and trivia on the characters comes either directly from the books or from Stephenie Meyer's personal correspondence or website.

Author Megan Whalen Turner

If you don't know who Megan Whalen Turner is, you have my deepest sympathies. Ms. Turner is only the author of one of the most brilliant book series ever written: The Thief (a Newbery Honor book, reviewed below) and its sequels The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia, and A Conspiracy of Kings. This multi-award winning series is as appealing to adults as to teens, and is suitable for a read-aloud to elementary as well.

Ms. Turner has also published a book of short stories, Instead of Three Wishes, and most recently has a short story appearing in The Firebirds, an anthology of short stories by fantasy fiction authors.

"Much like the books of Ursula K. Le Guin, Joan Aiken,
Diana Wynne Jones, or even Frank R. Stockton, Turner's work
holds strong appeal for both adult and young adult readers."

Calendar for Kids: Seasonal Cycle

As soon as a birthday passes, the questions start: When is my birthday? How long is that? When is Christmas? How long is that? A countdown calendar is good to show how many days are left, but it doesn't help kids with the concept of one season following another, and a year repeating itself over and over in a seasonal cycle. This simple, easy-to-make calendar for kids teaches the seasonal concept painlessly and thoroughly. Use it in conjunction with your countdown calendars, and your preschool child will soon have mastered the concept of the four seasons!

Romeo and Juliet Movies

Romeo and Juliet is probably one of the best-known plays in the world. Certainly it is the one that pops into anyone's head when William Shakespeare is mentioned. Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most popular and enduring plays despite - or perhaps because of - the fact that the romance ends in tragedy. Romeo and Juliet has of course been recreated on stage countless times since it was written over 400 years ago. More recently, it has been made into movies several times, both as faithful adaptations and as revisions based on the famous original story, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Here are some of the most famous and best movie versions of Romeo and Juliet, from traditional to daring to dance to cartoon, along with a brief description of each. Find one you love!

Their improvised and seriously shortened version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" appears on their album Great White North.

Bob and Doug are soon to be reintroduced to television in the animated show "Bob and Doug" drawn by Animax Entertainment (who created the animated version of this song, below). Rick Moranis will be an executive producer but will not perform; Bob will be voiced instead by comedian, actor, and vocal mimic Dave Coulier of Full House fame.

Movie vs. History: 'The Other Boleyn Girl'

How much fact and how much fiction in the movie "The Other Boleyn Girl?" It does a good job of popularizing the Tudor period, and the sets and costuming are beautiful, but whether it is more fact than fiction is debatable. It is true that there are few facts known about Anne Boleyn's early life, and even fewer about her sister Mary, but this movie manages to contradict most of those that are known.

This lens addresses only the places where the movie version contradicts the known or widely-agreed-upon facts. It is not a comprehensive history, nor a review of the book.

Kid's Homemade Dalmatian Puppy Birthday Party: Make Your Own and Save Money!

One of the most successful birthday parties I ever organized for my kids was also one of the cheapest: a Dalmatian puppy party. Everything, including the party favors, was homemade, but I heard from parents for weeks how their kids had loved it, and kept on wearing the favors, and didn't want to wash off their makeup!

Kids #1 and #2 have birthdays six weeks apart, so this was a joint 7th and 5th birthday party, with friends from all age groups. I was astonished that they agreed so easily on a Dalmatian puppy theme!

(PS: The 7-year-old girl is now RatopianGirl on Squidoo!)

Modern-Day Noah's Ark

Schagen, The Netherlands, has something old under the sun. A seaworthy replica of Noah's Ark, built to approximately one-half of the size specifications given in the Old Testament, has been constructed by Dutch carpenter Johan Huibers. Inside life-size statues of elephants and giraffe greet the visitors, a small theater showing a film on the life of Noah is tucked under the keel, and the nearly finished top deck will soon house a petting zoo with lambs, chickens, goats, and a camel. Passengers can sail up and down Holland's canals while exploring the giant bark.

Huibers has already begun work on a full-scale replica.

'Five in a Row' Literature-Based Unit Studies: Easy, Inexpensive, Fun!

As an educator, mother, and homeschooler, I have a rave curriculum review for all you new (and seasoned) homeschoolers out there. Five in a Row is the best, easiest, most fun, and cheapest homeschool curriculum, guaranteed to prevent teacher/student burnout! I believe this homeschool curriculum is truly unique. I have no affiliation with FIAR or its authors (though you may doubt me after reading my review).

Five in a Row (FIAR) is a literature-based unit study for homeschool, and is wonderful for both the mother/teacher and the child/student for many reasons: price, simplicity, ease of use, flexibility, sparking student interest, brevity of lessons without sacrificing quality learning, avoiding teacher and student burnout, retention of learning.

Note that all of the boxes below contain quotes from the FIAR material or website.

How to Make a Powdered Wig for a Judge, Barrister, or Footman

The frog footmen in our homeschool production of Alice in Wonderland needed powdered wigs - and there were three frog footmen! No way to keep the purchase of three wigs within budget, so I knew I would have to make them myself. I'd made a yarn wig for a handmade doll once, but that was more time-consuming than I wanted, and I didn't know how I would make the side curls needed for a proper footman's wig.

Googling around, I saw some people trying to do it with toilet paper rolls, but I just couldn't see that turning out well. Then I found a reference to someone making a powdered wig out of quilt batting, and I knew I had what I needed.

Money As Debt: How Banks Loan Money They Don't Have to Create Money We Owe Them!

What is money? How is it created, where does it come from, what backs the printed paper we spend? This is a huge and incredibly confusing topic, especially for anyone not in the finance industry. This animated video (broken into five short segments) presents this complex subject in a way that even a fifth-grader can comprehend, with a bit of concentration and a few pauses for explanations.

My fifth-grade son and I watched it and I was astonished at how much I learned ... and how much he has retained. But I was more astonished at how much I had never questioned or considered as to how our economy works.

In addition to being something every consumer should view once (or thrice) in order to understanding more about how our country is run and how our economy works, this short video provides a great jumping-off place for a homeschool unit study on the history of money, American and world economy, and a plethora of related financial topics.

Best Twilight Saga 'Midnight Sun' Quotations

Stephenie Meyer released the first chapter of Midnight Sun online for her fans. Unfortunately, shortly before the Twilight movie was released, someone leaked a draft copy of the first twelve chapters online. This has stalled and possibly halted the completion of Midnight Sun since Stephenie was very upset by the leak from a trusted source, one of just a few people she had shared the manuscript with. "What happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being," she said in a statement after the leak.

She went ahead and put the twelve-chapter draft version on her website so that her fans would not have to feel guilty about searching it out online. However, in solidarity with Ms. Meyer, and in anticipation of her actually finishing the book, I am only publishing my favorite lines from the first chapter, which she intended to release.

While Christian conservation doesn't necessarily mean wholesale buy-in of the ecological scare-du-jour, it does mean we should be the first to take action to preserve and protect the beautiful world God gave us.
HEY TWILIGHT FANS! What Do YOU Think About the Leak of Twilight's Midnight Sun?

The first twelve chapters of Midnight Sun, in draft form, were leaked online. As she had sent the draft to only a few trusted friends, Ms. Meyer naturally felt betrayed at the leak and found herself unable to continue writing the book, at least as of now. She has made the draft copy of Midnight Sun available on her site so that fans don't have to feel guilty searching for the pirated copy, but is very disappointed that they are reading an unfinished, unpolished draft copy.

The leak of the first twelve draft chapters of Midnight Sun, the fifth book in the Twilight Saga, was a dreadful betrayal of Stephenie Meyer as the author and friend who brought us the Twilight Saga. I totally understand - though I am very disappointed - that she feels unable to complete the book at this time.

Please read Ms. Meyer's statement regarding the leak and then let us know how you feel.

Flower Costumes: Make a Simple and Elegant Calla Lily Costume

In my opinion, the calla lily is one of the most stately of the flowers, so I when I was tasked with creating a costume for the lead flower in our homeschool version of Alice in Wonderland, I naturally started thinking how best to create a calla lily. I very much wanted to keep that smooth expanse of petal with the flowing edges.

On a very tight budget and needing something that wouldn't get bashed up too easily, I turned to one of my costume and crafting staples: craft foam.

"Purple Stars are fairy dust. They're magic. They're surprises. You'll never know when or where they'll arrive ..." thus says Megan Casey, Squidoo's Editor-in-Chief. Getting a purple star is a special thrill for a Giant Squid, and I have received that thrill almost two dozen times now! I thought a lens would be an easy way to keep track of my awards.

Please add your purple star lens to the link list below - don't forget to vote on it! - and check the list to see if I nominated you for a purple star!

Flower Costumes: Make a Simple Hollyhock, Larkspur, or Gladiolus Costume

Putting on the play Alice in Wonderland requires a lot of flower costumes! As the costume mistress in charge of the flowers, I had to come up with six flower headpieces that were different, quick and easy to make, inexpensive, and sturdy enough to handle several productions by our homeschool theater group. I didn't want to simply make petals around the face in different colors, but rather recognizably different flowers. This particular tall flower headpiece could work as a larkspur, foxglove, gladiolus, hollyhock, or other tall stem with multiple flowers, but it is quite simple to make!

Paul Smith was born with severe cerebral palsy and his parents were told he had no chance of surviving his infancy. Despite handicaps that kept him out of school, Paul went on to create a whole new art form using only paper and a manual typewriter - but this is NOT your regular old ASCII art, so don't be fooled! He was also a masterful chess player and rarely turned down a chance to play.

Paul Smith was born in Philadelphia on 21 September 1921. He died at age 85 on 25 June 2007.

The Great Arizona Haboob of 2011

A haboob is a giant dust storm caused by the strong downdraft in front of a storm. This wall of sand or dust that precedes the storm can be sixty miles wide. Precipitation often evaporates in the hot, dry air, but if it reaches ground level it causes a mud storm instead of a dust storm.

The word haboob is from the Arabic and means "strong wind."

A haboob of massive proportions developed from a storm collapsing near Tucson on July 5, 2011, and covered a huge portion of Arizona, moving northward from Tucson to Phoenix and engulfing both cities. This enormous haboob was at least a mile high and 100 miles wide, with wind gusting over 60 miles per hour.

Public domain photo from Wikimedia Commons is a haboob blowing into Phoenix, Arizona, 2003.

Words with Friends just came out big on Facebook - or rather, as a Droid app for Facebook - and I am suddenly deluged with friends starting games with me. I don't get the hype. What's wrong with the good ol' Scrabble game there on Facebook? It's not quite as colorful and pretty, I'll give you that; but it is FAR more functional - which makes it a lot more fun in my book!

Why Home School? I Chose Homeschool Before I Had Children

Why homeschool? I homeschool my four children for a variety of reasons - any one of which would be ample reason on its own, in my books! But this is the story of why the thought of homeschooling first occurred to me, and why I followed up on it, since the reasons that followed, though valid, did not weigh in at first. My saga differs considerably from any other "why I homeschool" story I've heard, not least in the fact that I chose homeschool years before I had children.

With a degree in elementary education, I think I bring something of a different perspective to the debate on the homeschooling choice and the reasons to choose home school. I hope that the story of my journey will help answer questions from those who are considering homeschool (or from those who think it is a poor choice!) in addition to bolstering the confidence of those who have already chosen the homeschool journey with their families.

Why I Chose Home Birth - Four Times!

With all the medical advances and specialized equipment available in hospitals today, why would anyone consider a home birth? Home birth is, and should be, a very personal choice. But there's not much "choice" involved if you don't know the pertinent facts. Being informed will help you make the right choice for you and your baby. As it turns out, there are many very valid reasons for choosing to labor and deliver at home. I personally chose home birth - four times! - and wouldn't change anything about that choice. (At left is my fourth home-birthed baby.)

HULK TWITTER. FOLLOW HULK?

The Incredible Hulk has become a phenomenon on Twitter.com. Much like the Chuck Norris jokes that abound everywhere, suddenly Twitter is rife with multiple accounts purporting to be from Hulks, each with a specific point of view. One thing the accounts have in common is all caps and angry, terse tweets with the poor grammar structure we all associate with the Hulk from comic books, television, and the movies. Most of them incorporate a good deal of humor, which is of course the entire point of a twitter account like this!

Some seem to be real twitter accounts, with the author writing personally but in Hulkish language; others are true Hulk spoofs and tweet only on their spoof topic (like Hamlet Hulk). There are more Hulk twitter accounts than I could possibly find and catalog. And, frankly, some of them aren't that funny. Others are very funny and retweet-worthy. Here are a few of the best ones I could find. Who knows, you might find a TwitterHulk you'd like to follow!

The Great Christmas Card Debate

Sure, if I had the time, I would sign each card and write a long, personalized letter, then address the envelope with my personal calligraphy in multi-colored inks. But I'm a homeschool mom of four and time like that just doesn't exist around here! So I settle for getting greetings out in any form, including electronic. And they are always sent at least by President's Day.

Learn Shapes, Numbers, Colors, and More From Little Rabbit and Friends

Alan Baker's "Little Rabbit" series of books are some of my daughter's absolute favorites, and they are books I don't get tired of reading to her. The illustrations are beautiful and the simple, sweet stories are utterly charming. It's hard to find a fresh and interesting way to present concept books (books that teach shapes, ABCs, a counting, etc) ... but Baker has done it. These concept books do not condescend to the intended audience but instead seem to enter into the simple joys of young life in a way that the audience - reader and readee alike - share comfortably with the author. The rabbits never speak, which contributes to the peaceful feeling of the stories. If you have a toddler or need to give a toddler a gift, these books are a real treat.

"You've been BLESSED!"

This lens is my tribute to the Squid Angels who have blessed me, personally, as my thank you to them for that little thrill ... and for the boost in lensrank, of course!

Who can afford to toss out a pair of ripped jeans? And with today's casual styles, why would anyone want to? Many rips and tears in jeans are considered decorative; but my kids put rips in the knees that leaves the whole lower part of the pant hanging on the ground!

When you really need to salvage torn jeans with a patch, there is a simple method that takes almost no skill and looks great when you're done. As a bonus, the messier you make it, the cooler the patched jeans will look!

Multiple Squidoo Accounts: How and Why to Make a Second (or Third) Account

I thought off and on for quite a while about creating a second Squidoo account for a particular niche that was threatening to overwhelm my regular account. I finally took the plunge and did it, and was pleased at the ease of the transition, but not pleased with how difficult it is to find information on the subject! I've shared some of my experiences with some of my friends, but realizing that there is a very real interest out there hearing the WHOs, WHATs, WHEREs, and WHYs - not to mention the all-important HOWs - of creating a second (or third) Squidoo account, I decided to collect the knowledge and experience I have scraped together into one place, and provide a place to accumulate new knowledge and experience. And here it is!

Who Would Drink Raw Milk? Would YOU?

Raw milk is real food! Science has yet to improve on the good food nature gives us. It tends to really screw things up when it tries ... saccharin, anyone? Milk is a food that has been consumed for most of human history, yet only in recent times, with science "improving" it through pasteurization and homogenization, have health troubles been the result. Even lactose-intolerant people can usually consume raw dairy, due to the proliferation of live enzymes residing within that help the body digest the food!
Studies in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet proved that, contrary to popular and official government opinion, children drinking raw milk have fewer incidences of tuberculosis, not to mention less tooth decay as compared to children drinking pasteurized milk. So ... YES, WAY! Monkeybrain, the real food is real, raw milk!

"Her Hands" | A Poem for My Mother

Writing poetry can be a cathartic and cleansing experience. I wrote this poem about six months after my mother's death, spilling almost complete onto the paper, needing little revision afterward. This is, as you may guess, an intensely personal poem I have not shared with many people until now.
My mother has been gone for fifteen years now, and we just passed what would have been her 70th birthday.

HEY BABY BRAIN! Can a Woman Tell If She's Pregnant With a Boy or a Girl?

I don't know if there are any foolproof ways to predict the gender of a baby other than ultrasound ... except one. And it won't work on the first pregnancy! In my experience, most women tend to carry boys one way and girls another. For me, my two girls sat very high, causing severe shortness of breath and acid reflux, while my two boys both sat very low, wallowing on my bladder as it were, with predictable results. My sister was the opposite of me: her two girls rode low, and her son rode high.

While from that short survey it doesn't seem to be that all women consistently carry boys low and girls high or vice versa, I've asked around among my friends and it does seem to be consistent for a woman to consistently carry her girls in one location, and the boys in the other, while another woman may be consistent in the other direction.

I'm curious to know if that is true for other women, hence this debate lens. Please share your personal experience with the world!

Dragonslayer: A Family Movie Review

Dragonslayer gives us the young sorcerer's apprentice, Galen (a very young Peter MacNicol), volunteering to kill the dragon when his master Ulrich (Ralph Richardson) is killed just as he is about to set off on the quest. The fearful king (Peter Eyre) does not want the dragon challenged, since he has placated it by the use of a virgin lottery choosing two village girls each year to be sacrificed, and he fears the unbridled wrath of the dragon if someone tries to kill it. But when Princess Elspeth (Chloe Salaman) discovers that she has been protected from the lottery for years and substitutes her name for every name in the pot, the king begs young Galen to stop the dragon before it takes his daughter. Ably assisted by Valerian (Caitlin Clarke), a young woman who has lived disguised as a boy all her life to protect her from the lottery, he sets out to complete his quest.

Maximum Ride: The Series

Maximum Ride is cool. Maximum Ride is Spiderman, James Bond, Batman. Maximum Ride is a text-only comic book. As one reviewer put it, Maximum Ride is The Boxcar Kids meets The X-Men.

Maximum Ride is a series of books about six flying children, injected with avian DNA as fetuses by mad scientists. The children - Maximum, Fang, Iggy, the Gasman, Nudge, and Angel - have escaped their science lab prison and are out in the real world, trying to fly under the radar, so to speak. The scientists are sending Erasers - genetically engineered werewolves - to catch or kill them, and the flock is trying to stay free when strange ... or maybe we should say stranger ... things begin to happen. New and unexpected mutations are giving some of the flock superpowers. Max, the leader, begins hearing voices in her head. Is she really supposed to save the world, as her voice is telling her, or is she going crazy?

Maximum Ride is a total roller-coaster of a story. It is full of incredible coincidences and outrageous happenings, but you really don't care because it is just plain fun. As Max and her flock fight off bad guys and get closer to understanding their destiny, we're all along for the ride and loving it. Soon they uncover the villain, supercorporation ITEX, whose evil mastermind head is implementing the By Half Plan, a diabolical plot to reduce the world population by half and create a superrace with no disease or war.

For those whose just have to understand the title: Maximum bestows upon herself the last name "Ride" after astronaut Sally Ride.

Georgette Heyer (say her name correctly: HAIR) was a prolific author, penning approximately 60 historical romance and detective fiction novels from the 1920s to the 1970s. Her Regency romances, especially, continue in popularity and are still the standard by which all others are judged ... appropriate, considering that she pretty much created the entire genre single-handed.

There is always a secondhand store somewhere. But the pittance they pay for used items may not cover the cost of gas to get there, and the selection of items for sale is limited, at best. The exchange rate is discouraging too; the trade value of four books might purchase one used book in return.

Here's a solution that allows you to make a one-for-one exchange: book for book, DVD for DVD, CD for CD. On top of that, you don't spend any money on gas, just a couple of stamps to mail out your used items! Not to mention being able to choose from thousands of books in return, or place a request for a specific item, and be notified the instant someone lists it!

Sound too good to be true? It's not! Meet the trading trio of PaperBack Swap, Swap-a-DVD, and Swap-a-CD, sister sites that swap your used items.

Real Food, Real Living Headquarters

If you want the short definition for "real food," it is: NUTRIENT DENSE. For the long explanation, read on:
REAL FOOD challenges politically correct nutrition: raw milk, real butter, coconut oil, traditional fats, soaked grains, long-rise sourdough, yogurt, kefir, piima, fermented foods ... real foods, traditional foods, foods that were common before the industrial age changed the way food looked, tasted, and acted in our bodies, not the new, scientifically modified, fake foods.
REAL LIVING prepares food in traditional ways that preserve and enhance its value as nourishment, rather than stripping away any nutritional vestiges left by modern methods of food production.
REAL FOOD can be made in a normal kitchen with normal kitchen equipment, not food made with industrial machinery and chemical enhancers.
REAL LIVING produces food by traditional methods that respect the earth and the animals involved, not by monocultured farms that must be kept alive with chemicals, and factory farms that raise animals in boxes and keep them alive with hormones and antibiotics rather than growing foods and sunshine.
REAL FOOD is nutrient-dense food that kept our ancestors healthy until their deaths, rather than dragging out the final half of their lives with the chronic aches, pains, and illnesses that plague the modern world.
We are NOT just looking for recipe lenses, no matter how yummy! We are looking for lenses that specifically promote or discuss some aspect of these topics:
~ Real, nutrient-dense food and recipes for it
~ Traditional methods of food preparation
~ The dangers of "frankenfoods" and modern foods including SOY
~ Traditional and holistic methods of farming
~ The detriment of modern methods of farming and food preparation
~ Health benefits of real food as food, medicine, supplement, or beauty product
~ Any lenses that otherwise puts the diet dictocrats in their place
Dr. Weston A. Price, Sally Fallon, Mary Enig, Dr. Mercola, Jordan Rubin, Nina Planck are names to be reckoned with in this group.
Many thanks to lensmaster spirituality for honoring Real Food, Real Living with the Excellent Groups Award!

Tandemonimom's Lens-O-Matic

This lensography showcases what a sometimes-schizophrenic and sometimes-hyperfocused mind I have. Some lenses relate to others obsessively; many others are just random. That's me; what you see is what you get! For instance, right about the time I discovered Squidoo, I stumbled across a book series cleverly disguised as teen lit. Knowing that teen lit is often better than adult lit, I dove in and haven't really resurfaced yet.

Most of my top-ranked lenses are the result of that little foray: my so-far ten lenses (EDIT: now seventeen!) on the Twilight Saga have yielded one Lens of the Day lens, four Top 100 lens, and several other lenses in and out of the Top 500.

I made Giant Squid on April 7, 2009! At the same time, Homeschool Quotes - my first non-Twilight Top 100 lens - hit the Top Ten at #2 on the Squidoo charts! Thanks to everyone who has kindly rated and commented on my lenses, for all your support and help!

I published my 100th lens on September 29, 2009! It is not only a special 100 for me, it is a tribute to my grandmother on her 100th birthday. Happy Birthday, Grannie!

PS: Due to my obsessive nature, I update this lens with every new lens I create! All of my lenses appear here within a day or two of publication!

Games for fractions? Why not? Dull and boring is how most kids think of learning fractions, but there are plenty of fun fractions games available, so why not make learning fun and painless instead? These math fraction games will enhance learning so that it is retained and remembered better, and it will enhance your teaching experience as well ... who doesn't want to hear, "Oh, boy!
Quixo: Best Award-Winning Strategy Game You Never Heard Of!

With a Games Magazine "Best New Strategy Game" award as well as awards from Mensa, Parents' Choice, and several other awards, Quixo is undoubtedly a game that should be under your tree this Christmas! Simple to learn, but expect to work a while to master the strategies!

Learning the rules is simple: get five X's or O's in a row by moving and turning the cubes on the board. Mastering the strategy to win, though, can take a little bit longer! Simple but not simplistic, strategizing to create opportunities to get your five in a row while blocking your opponent - and not inadvertently helping him with your own strategy moves - will take all your concentration! This game can be played by two players, or by four players in pairs.

Twilight Theme Song

No, it's not on Stephenie Meyer's playlist for any of the Twilight books, but I keep thinking of this song when I think of Bella and Edward's romance, and I think of them when I hear the song. It references Romeo and Juliet as well as Superman and Lois Lane and a score of other historical lovers, and casually dismisses them saying, "I am not impressed / I love you the best." Doesn't that just sing of Edward and Bella to you? Remember Edward talking about Sam's imprinting on Emily ... "It is almost as strong as the way I feel about you."

Besides, I think this picture of Charlie Sexton looks exactly like Edward. Absolutely spot on. So when I realized that this is the face I picture for Edward, and he also sings this song "Impressed" about a love that is stronger than Romeo and Juliet's, well, that just hit the high note for me. (Note that I don't think Edward looks like Charlie Sexton, but I do think Charlie sometimes looks like Edward.)

If you want to see the whole Twilight cast of characters as I picture them, check out the Twilight Dream Team. I made it before the movie came out!

My Favorite Jason Mraz Songs

Brilliantly clever lyricist Jason Mraz has a sound all his own, drawn from influences as varied as reggae, pop, rock, folk, jazz, and hip hop. He's most famous for being able to cram a huge amount of words into a teensy amount of music, and yet be mostly intelligible the while:

from "Wordplay":
When it's time to get ill I got your remedy
For those who don't remember me
Well, let me introduce you to my style
I try to keep a jumble in the lyrics, never mumble
When the groove is makin' people tongue-tied ...

He has released three albums and had several hits, but I'm always amazed at how many people don't know who he is yet. So herewith ... enjoy Jason Mraz!

New Christmas Music: Riu Riu Chiu

"Riu Riu Chiu" is technically not a new Christmas song; it is a lovely new version of a relatively unknown old Spanish Christmas carol by Sixpence None the Richer from their Christmas album The Dawn of Grace. The phrase "riu riu chiu" in Spanish is like saying "twitter tweet chirp" in English: it is the traditional Spanish sound made by the nightingale. Sixpence None the Richer has reshaped the traditional Spanish carol, switching or shortening some verses, eliminating others altogether, and switching occasionally from Spanish into English. The result is a delicate, haunting melody.

I have tried to put a translation of the Spanish verses below so you can get a sense of what they are singing. I know very little Spanish, so please feel free to correct me via the comment section!

(No, I'm not talking about the Bible.) We're all on one side or the other of the "God Divide." As an atheist, do you ever wonder about believers? As a Christian, are you curious how the world views you?

A journalism student jumped the Divide in a study-abroad semester at home ... but a whole world away: an undercover secular liberal from Brown University masquerading for a semester as an evangelical at ultra-conservative Liberty University, the school founded by televangelist Jerry Falwell.

Whichever side of the God Divide you are on, get a little insight into the other ... and maybe into your own side as well.

Some lensmasters have discovered a way to utilize the area of the sidebar of the lens to boost their own sales. Glance to the right-hand column of this lens to see what I'm talking about! Zazzle images are a great addition to any lens, both boosting the visual interest with colorful images that (hopefully) relate to and enhance the content of your lens, and boosting the sales potential of each lens, since Zazzle will pay you 15% of any sales driven by clickouts from your lens.

Beautiful New Christmas Hymn: 'I Celebrate the Day'

This original song, one of the more low-key on a generally high-energy album, can take its unashamed place beside all the spiritual Christmas carols as it celebrates the day of the birth of the Savior, blending beautifully with the theme of a modern devotional song.

This new Christmas hymn appears on the best new Christmas album in years, Let It Snow Baby ... Let It Reindeer, Relient K has lots of old favorites - rocked out in a way no one would ever have dreamed of doing before now! - and a few originals that are sure to become instant favorites. From punk-pop to hard rock to slow and dreamy to downright silly, there is something on this album for everyone, and they are all well worth listening to!

Sure, it's easy to find a phonics book that showcases the letter you are teaching. But who really wants to read a book like that? Believe me, if you don't find it entertaining, the kids probably don't either! It doesn't take much work to find a really good book that will highlight your letter. It could be a cool book about ants for "A," or a storybook that happens to emphasize the letter you are working on. Make sure it is a story first, not an educational text that tries to construct a storyline around the letter.

Mineral Makeup is Better for You and Your Skin! Mineral makeup, created from naturally occuring minerals rather than man-made chemicals, is more healthful and better for your skin, while it does as well as or better than standard chemical-laden makeups at beautifying and covering skin blemishes.

Below you can tell us if you've used mineral makeup, whether you think mineral makeup is worth the container it comes in, vote for your favorite brand of mineral makeup, and even add your personal review of your favorite - or least favorite - brand.

How to Write About Homeschooling on Squidoo and Make Money!

Every homeschooling family could use a little boost in their budget, right? But we need to be able to make money from home, on a here-and-there sort of schedule, right? Wouldn't it be nice if we could make some extra money writing about homeschooling - the topic we really know about! But blogging takes lots of time and upkeep, and it is hard to get regular viewers or get your blog found by random searchers. Then there is figuring out how to get search engines to like your posts, not to mention how to monetize your blog. So making money writing about homeschooling was pretty much a dream for all but a few ... until Squidoo.

Squidoo is a 100% free publishing platform where you can publish one-page mini-blogs, called "lenses," about any topic you choose - and make money for yourself or for charity (or both!). Read on to discover just how simple it is to publish your writing with Squidoo, and increase your homeschooling budget while you're at it.

Who really needs to receive another tie, or fancy candle, or fruitcake this Christmas? If you are looking for something meaningful to do with your gift giving budget this year, give meaning along with your gift by giving a donation in someone else's name. A small donation to Heifer International will give the charitable gift of a farm animal, an opportunity for self-reliance for a family living in poverty. These gifts of hope are the perfect way to celebrate the season of giving.

Which Narnian Chronicle Should Be Read First?

Recent reissues of The Chronicles of Narnia have numbered the books in chronological order rather than the order in which they were written and published. This is just plain wrong!

Lucy stumbles into the wardrobe, unknowing and unknown by the first-time reader, and creates one of the most magical moments in literature. Knowing ahead of time that the wardrobe she approaches is probably the one that was made from the wood grown from the seeds of the fruit that came from Narnia, and therefore, sure, the wardrobe is a portal into Narnia, just strips that moment of all its wonderment.

The Magician's Nephew, which is the first book in the chronological history of Narnia, explains away the magic! The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the first book written in the Narnia series, and the most magical, must be read before The Magician's Nephew. Unfortunately, recent publications number the series chronologically rather than in the order they were written and meant to be experienced.

Many of us have uneasy recollections of math drills from our school days. Homeschooling moms quail before the math task, and students dread the dreary drill. But is that all there is to math? In fact ... is that really math at all?

What if schools taught other subjects the same way they teach math? Let's have a look ...

Finding that perfect lens that really goes the extra mile to turn a good lens into a really great lens is a special thrill. These are my purple star tracks and a way to keep tabs on lenses I really, really like. I have to say, sometimes I'm indignant to find a lens I want to nominate already has a purple star ... for no other reason that that I'd like the honor of nominating it!

The quest for Squid Angels in August 2011 was simple: get on the schoolbus and tour Squidoo to find seven neighborhoods where you don't normally bless lenses, and bless ten lenses in each neighborhood!

This back-to-school blessing quest was a lot of fun, and I've chronicled my neighborhood travels here. I hope you find some new-to-you lenses to love here as I did!

I'm Tandemonimom - welcome to my Angel lens! Let me introduce myself. In my personal life, I am a stay-at-home mom, married 25 years, with four beautiful children (age 7 to 15) whom I homeschool. I also have a degree in elementary education.

My Squidoo persona has been creating lenses with Squidoo since July 2008; as you might imagine, I make a lot of lenses on homeschooling, parenting, and similar topics. I was granted Giant Squid status in April 2009 and published my 100th lens in September 2009. As of February 2011, I have published over 150 lenses and have received one Lens of the Day award, 18 Purple Star awards, and countless blessings from the many lovely Squid Angels floating about. I also have added two more Squidoo accounts for niche sales lenses.

Homeschooling Through High School and into College

Homeschooling elementary-age children seems simple in comparison to the heavy subjects that start in middle school and get heavier in high schooler. Many parents find the idea of homeschooling all the way through high school to be daunting, but lots of people have gone before and taken their children all the way through high school and into college without setting foot in a public school building. Here is a compendium of pages to help you see your way clear to homeschooling your teen through high school.

How are you doing it? Inquiring minds want to know! Homeschooling is by nature cooperative, and part of that cooperation is sharing information. Current homeschooling families want to know: Are you doing something different? Can I get some great ideas from you? Can you get some ideas from me? Wannabe homeschooling families want to know: How did you decide to homeschool? What were the difficulties in getting started? How did you set things up to start with, and how has that changed?

Best Kid Books: Dreamsong

Dreamsong, written by Roxaboxen author Alice McLerran and lavishly illustrated by Russian artist Valery Vasiliev, is a sweet, dreamy picture book, perfect for a bedtime story with a thoughtful child.

An ABA Pick List book for 1992, published by Tambourine Press, it was a favorite with school libraries and was even made into a musical drama by one school.

New Christmas Music: The Last Christmas

This original new Christmas song was written by Matt Slocum of Sixpence None the Richer when he and his wife were expecting their first child and about to have their "last Christmas" without any children.

Matt writes: "As the days progressed, and our daughter grew in the womb, we both began to identify in our own way with what Mary and Joseph may have felt, that their lives would never be the same, that their child would bring about a new era. The lyric is an attempt to express this sentiment. One interesting discovery in the process of writing the lyric was that the word "Advent" means "the birth of a child," and that every mother and father experiences, in their own way, their own personal Advent."

New Christmas Music: Boxing Day

In this poignant day-after-Christmas song, Relient K captures both the let-down of the after-Christmas frenzy and the uplift of looking forward to the new year and a new spring. This song is a sweet counterpoint to the hard-hitting beat of most of the rest of this wonderful Christmas album, Let It Snow Baby ... Let It Reindeer.

There was a lot of grumbling when Tempe, Phoenix, and surrounding areas added traffic cameras to catch red-light runners and speedsters. So everyone was tickled when a group of enterprising Santa impersonators decided to gift commuters with a camera-free commute! Without damaging any property, they covered the traffic cameras with large, gift-wrapped boxes and waved them on their merry way.

United Stats of Tandemonimom

I joined Squidoo in March 2008 but didn't really do anything until July. My first lens climbed gratifyingly in the ratings, up to #602 in just two weeks (and #50 in its category Arts/Literature). I was wishing for a way to track my stats and happened across bdkz's stats page and decided to make one for myself, meager though it is at the moment.

Anyway, the squidhook has caught me and I figure my kids are old enough to know how to cook for themselves ... right?

I'm using BDKZ's method for counting inclusive totals:
Top 100 = 1 - 100
Top 1,000 = 1 - 1,000
Top 5,000 = 1 - 5,000

New Christmas Music: Christmas for Two

Leigh Nash of Sixpence None the Richer sings this beautiful new Christmas song, and she wrote it as well, with Kate York. This new song is a perfect lover's ballad, rendered flawlessly in Leigh's bell-like tones, wonderful for curling up in front of a toasty fire with some hot cocoa and watching the snow fall.

"Christmas for Two" appears on Sixpence None the Richer's new Christmas album, The Dawn of Grace, one of two original songs (one each written by Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum) in a mix of truly stand-out traditional Christmas favorites.
