Zentangle

What is a Zentangle? In a word, a doodle. A structured, contained doodle. The term 'Zentangle' was coined by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas when, one day, Maria described her experience, as she created her art, as "feeling timeless, free and engendering a sense of deep well-being". Rick recognised that she was in a meditative state and so Zentangles were born.

I use the technique of Zentangle in my own artwork, incorporating them into sketching, art-journalling and collage. Originally I created individual Zentangles, as shown on Rick and Maria's website Zentangle Homepage but then began to incorporate them into my art journals.

On this page, I will describe how to draw a Zentangle from scratch, what materials are required for Zentangles and also show you how to use the techniques imaginatively in your own work.

Note: Zentangle-inspired drawings are often called 'zendoodles'.

Hairy Men are Gorgeous!

Hairy Men are Gorgeous!

Humans are covered with hair, even the most fair-haired, pixie-like person has body hair unless they are suffering from a medical condition. Androgenic hair (hair that appears post-puberty) is due to the male hormones present in both men and women. Men have more of these hormones (yes, really) so are generally hairier.

So one could assume then, that the hairier the bloke, the more 'manly' he is. Which makes you wonder why so many men prefer to remove their body hair.

You're a woman, right? How do you feel about hairy men? Do you purr or do you run?

You're not a woman; you ARE a hairy bloke? Are you proud of your mat? Do you hate it? Do you do all you can to get rid of the lovely, curly stuff? Let us know how you deal with HAIRY MEN!

Textile Art, Fabric Art & Art Quilts

Mixed media art is all the rage these days. We've all been gessoing, altering, collaging, stamping, crayoning and painting like crazy things. The next step on from those typical media and materials is sewing. I've resisted as long as I've been able to, but I too have been sucked into the tactile, colorful, sparkly world of textiles, embroidery, beads and embellishment.

My initiation into textile art came in the form of Teesha Moore's wonderful fabric journals. I found myself more and more drawn towards art using fabric and thread and started thinking about investing in a sewing machine. The sewing machine duly arrived. I spent hours on eBay, pouncing on beads and scraps of delicious fabric.

This page is not really a how-to - there are so many websites and books out there that can do that better than I can - but it is a collection of ideas, suggestions and resources related to textile art. I've described my processes a little bit but, as always, your own input will make your creations unique to you.

Except where indicated, all text and photos are copyright TheRaggedEdge 2012. Please do not copy. However, I am happy (and grateful) for any photos to be added to Pinterest.

Zentangle Workshop

Welcome to my zendoodle workshop. What's a zendoodle? Well, it is a drawing created by filling pre-defined spaces with repeated patterns. Some people call them Zentangles but this workshop is not connected to the Zentangle(R) method taught by Rick and Maria of Zentangle.com. I am not a certified Zentangle teacher (CZT) so this workshop is just a guide and a nudge to get you going. If you really want to get into this art form, then I highly recommend you visit Zentangle.com and consider taking the course.

This workshop is spread over a long page. Scroll down to see sections on materials for creating zendoodles, a short step-by-step demonstration, videos, a gallery of Zentangle and Zentangle-like drawings and a whole plethora of similar pages that showcase more aspects of Zentangles, including books and further information.

Please note, all text and images, unless otherwise stated, are mine and should not be used without permission.

How do you find Zentangle inspiration? Well, one way is to scour the internet and look at what other artists are doing. I do that all the time. However, there are Zentangles all around you.

Where? Let me show you.

Zentangles: Examples, Ideas and Materials

Since my first Zentangle page has become fairly popular despite being a bit unwieldy, it occurred to me that many visitors were possibly looking for something more than just the basics. So I set about creating several slightly complex pieces, hopefully to inspire you to do the same.

Zentangles don't have to be restricted to 3.5"x3.5" squares; they can be made any size and you can add them to many different types of art. Here are some examples of larger patterns and a little more information on the best materials to use. I will also include some ideas of how add sparkle to your journals by zinging a little Zentangle in here and there.

Please be patient - there are several large images here so the page may take time to load. Go fill in a bit of your Zentangle while you wait!

Important You don't have to be good at drawing to make a great piece of artwork!

The Doodle

Whatever you call it, in essence it's 'doodling with intent'. As opposed to doodling while on the telephone. Doodling with intent is making patterns on paper in order to have an end result; a piece of artwork. It is also used to facilitate an 'active meditation'. In other words, it is the kind of activity that allows you to disengage your brain while you do it. A bit like driving but without the speed. Or the car.

Doodling is relaxing, it's enjoyable, it's portable. it's fun and it's very, very easy. Anyone who can hold a pen can learn to doodle with intent.

Okay this looks complicated, a super doodle perhaps, but it's simple once broken down into baby steps. On this deliberately delicious doodle delight page, I'll show you how to draw a doodle to be proud of!

Traditional Welsh Food

Often when people think of Wales, they are reminded of mountains and Welsh Male Voice Choirs and railway stations with unpronounceable names.

Yep, I can say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

However, it often takes a little while before visitors realise that Wales has a deep-rooted culinary tradition all of its own. Many dishes are localised and often are unheard of in other parts of the country, while many more are typically consumed all over Wales. Who hasn't heard of the Welsh penchant for seaweed (laverbread) or the ubiquitous Welsh cake? Lamb is one of our finest exports being the best in the world, and Welsh cheese has a fine reputation. Wales also has several excellent breweries, both large and smaller family-owned ones.

Croeso - Welcome, come and enjoy a delicious exploration through these traditional foods of Wales.

One of the problems of having a son with a Lego obsession is finding good storage solutions. My son and I have endless... er... chats about how he should store his Legos. We tried many ways to solve the problem but somehow they still ended up on the floor! I have reached the conclusion that all I can do is provide the storage and hope that he will discover that having the Lego sorted and stored properly will be easier for him. We shall see. In the meantime I have bought several storage units and have found that the best ones are not always the dedicated Lego storage modules, as attractive as they are. Sometimes it pays to think outside the box.

Here is a selection of the best Lego storage.

Love Your Grey Hair | Gray is the New Blonde

How we resist our natural gray locks. We moan and groan about the silver hairs which peep through the glossy brunette (or red or blond or whatever is our natural hair color) as a sign of encroaching maturity. A reminder that we all, if we're lucky, will eventually succumb to old age. Most of us panic and reach for the dye. We go for streaks and tints - anything to disguise those nasty betraying grey hairs.

Never mind all that. You need to know - gray is now THE color to have. Celebrities are even going out of their way to embrace silver. The Baby Boomers continue to have it all our own way. We are not prepared to fake any longer. We will celebrate middle-age. We will make grey the new blonde. We will make YOU want to be gray.

Note: We Brits spell it 'grey'; Americans spell it 'gray'. I'm going to use both. Because I can. So there.

There are so many wonderful Zentangle artists around and they are very generous in sharing their art. I am making this collection for my own benefit... it's my easily accessible pathway to inspiration when I am bereft of ideas. They were going into a boring old bookmark folder when I thought I may as well put them on a lens to share with anyone who cares to tangle alongside.

I have lots of potential blogs to add so do check back now and then. They will be grouped in blocks of five so you will be able to see the new ones right away.

The images used on this page are my own zendoodles.

Signs Of The Zodiac: Capricorn

This lens will be focusing on Capricorns. I am a Capricorn myself so naturally I want to focus on all the great attributes of Capricorns and maybe some of their (very few) negative traits as well. I hope you enjoy reading about my sign and I hope you will visit my other pages too.

I was born on December 28th and so was my little sister 11 years after me. It's a horrible day for a birthday as everyone is exhausted after a hectic Christmas and getting geared up to celebrate the New Year. We are the 'inbetweenies'.

Read on to see if I have captured your Capricorn personality, take part in the poll and read the comments, there are some interesting opinions, and of course, we'd like to read yours.

I'd like to say a huge thank you to Jessica Barnhart, who originally created this page.

As a writer of articles, short stories, a WIP novel, various blogs, journals and, of course, a Squidoo lensmistress, I like to use tools to help organise ideas and writing.

Over the years I have collected several.... well, no, make that quite a lot, software applications geared towards writers. Some of them are good, most of them I never use but one or two remain my staunch allies and I would never, ever, never trade them in for anything!

This page provides a short introduction to a few of them.Applications to organise your writing, mind mapping, simple non-distracting text input programs and personal journaling software. I will outline their main advantages, point to a few disadvantages and provide as many links as I can where you can road-test these applications on a trial basis.

I'm sticking with mid-range, budget or free applications for the PC (although some of these applications have versions for the Mac). Dramatica Pro and the like are way out of my range! Let's go!

Knitting Socks - Free Patterns

I never knew how it felt to wear hand knitted socks until last year when I finally got round to knitting myself a pair. I only wish I'd made the discovery years ago!

Long ago I used to knit and then I stopped and didn't pick up a pair of knitting needles for over 20 years. Then I picked up two pairs and began to learn how to knit socks. That's right, although there are other ways, four double-pointed needles is the norm for sock knitting. Sometimes you need five. Before you run away screaming, let me say... just give it a go - you might surprise yourself.

On this page I have included some great resources: Silver's Sock Tutorial, which I followed when making my very first pair, some links to free sock knitting patterns and some recommendations for needles, yarns and a really great book. You'll also find some very useful videos - when you just need to SEE how it's done.

If you are a book artist, an art journaler or a doodler, you have surely tripped over a Zentangle(R) by now. Zentangles, sometimes known as Zendoodles, are a form of active meditation created by filling a pre-drawn line or 'string' with patterns called 'tangles'.

They are simple and very relaxing to do and you don't have to be an artist to make them.

Zentangle enthusiasts are always looking for inspiration; tangles are found all around - in nature, art, textiles, on the internet and in... books. Here is a wonderful collection of book to provide all the inspiration you need - right at your fingertips.

I have included some of my own Zendoodles just for fun. If you click on any of them, you'll be magically transported to Zen and Ink - a page with links to a myriad other Zentangle resources.

I have gathered a selection of links and resources for you to enjoy and, hopefully, encourage you to pick up a pen and have a go.

I have gathered together a selection of art and writing materials, which will help you on a wonderful journey of discovery into your art journal. I have also added in a few of my pages which may inspire you to try art journalling for yourself.

You've got a hairy man in your life - I know, or else you wouldn't be here. So what can you buy him to celebrate your love of his great hairy body?

Alternatively, I have suggestions of small hair-related tasks you could offer to do for him to show your appreciation. You could put them on hand-made hairy gift vouchers to be slipped inside a special card and claimed when the moment is right.

C'mon then, let's put a big smile on your hairy bear's face!

Junk Journal

What exactly is a "junk journal"? It might be easier to start with what it isn't. It's not a regular journal. It's not exactly an art journal either. It's not a scrapbook or a photo album. It isn't an altered book. However, it can be, or have, elements of all those things.

This journal is a 'junk journal' because I am using it to store all kinds of 'junk'. It will be a work-in-progress for a long time. My primary reasons for creating it are to use up art supplies - I have lots of collage images and saved art papers, I'd like somewhere to keep small personal notes and letters. I'd also like to keep photos in there that aren't good enough for a proper album but are precious nevertheless. It's not meant to be pretty or arty, however, it needs to be fun to make or I will get bored with it and throw it in a drawer and it will never to see the light of day again.

This junk journal starts with a ordinary 6" x 9" spiral bound notebook. Mine came from Paperchase, but any will do as long as the binding is fairly accommodating. You can even work in one you've already used. I'm not using paint in this one - at least I haven't so far. I want to make it quickly so that I can then begin to fill it with all my junk!

Follow along and see how to create your own junk journal. It's fast. It's furious and it is great fun!

All photos are my own. Please do not use them without permission but do feel free to link to this page and/or share it with friends.

The one thing that elevates a pretty Zendoodle drawing into a stunning one is the application of a little shading. Shadow adds dimensionality and also anchors the tangles, making them seem almost solid.

If you are unsure about how to add shade to Zentangles this page will show you how easy it is.

PS The terms 'Zentangle', Zendoodle and Zendala are used interchangeably. However, 'Zentangle' is a registered trademark and really applies to pieces created using the Zentangle method.

BLT - The Perfect Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato Sandwich

The BLT - Bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich is one of our perennial favourites. Purists would argue that the perfect BLT is just that: bread with perfectly cooked bacon, succulent slices of tomato and crisp lettuce leaves with maybe a hint of mayo. I am a BLT adventurer, I say, "give it to me in new and exciting ways so that I can explore and appreciate the variety, the taste, the texture and, mmmm..., the aroma" that the not-so-humble BLT has to offer!"

Here then, I present to you the astounding, the ever-surprising, the taste-bud tingling, the hunger-satisfying (but I could always manage another one) the chewy but succulent, the crispy but comforting.... the scrumptious and very, very yummy BLT!

Create a Journal page

Journaling has evolved. Lots of people create journals in new and innovative ways - making their own journal from scratch using traditional bookbinding techniques, altering an existing book to make an 'altered book' or simply by adding artwork in some form to their written work.... or adding text to their art.

My favourite thing to do is to journal and I love creating pages that combine words and art. I never plan anything, I just let the mood take me and am always surprised at the results - sometimes horrified but mostly pleased. Whether it is 'art' or not, it's mine, it's personal and it's fun.

I use minimal materials in my journals, though am as addicted as the next art journaler to spending my money on art supplies.

On this page I show you how to create a simple art journal page from scratch.

Also - don't miss the new page on creating unique fabric journals using glorious Kaffe Fassett charm packs.

This page offers reviews of my favorites and features the five I got for Christmas this year. I've also added in some from my wishlist... how could I not?

If you have an artist, journaler or doodler in the family then any one of these books will please and delight them. Hope you like them too.

Fabric Journals

I love my art journals and love looking at other people's too. It was while looking for more inspiration at Teesha Moore's art journal videos I saw she had uploaded four videos on fabric journals. Now I detest sewing and I'm not into patchworking - got all that out of my system years ago - but decided to take a look because I love Teesha's work.

Well, I was entranced. This was not sewing as I knew it. This is a fusion of glorious materials and clashing, vibrant colour... and the actual sewing is a happy, slapdash process which is just the sort of thing I like. It's how I create art and how I cook. In fact, it's how I live life in general!

These journals are simple signatures (folded paper) stitched into a quilted fabric cover. The cover is fashioned from a number of small quilted pillows stitched together to form a kind of fabric collage. You don't need a pattern or any kind of plan. Grab your fabric stash and you're good to go.

I couldn't wait to get started and here are the results.

All text and photos are my own unless otherwise stated.

Yay for Wellies! At last one of the most popular forms of footwear in the UK has become fashionable, even desirable. I've always loved my Wellington boots... many pairs have served me well - from days spent in the stable yard as a child, to plodding behind my own kids as they splash along the sea shore in the middle of winter.

Thanks to the myriad festivals and gigs in the UK, I am thrilled that good old gumboots have come out of the garden shed and into the fashion spotlight.

Pull on your thick Wellington boot socks and come join me as I showcase some of the best funky boots in the UK.

Rock Painting - Cats & Dogs

Painting on rocks is easier than you think. Animals make really good subjects to paint on stones and, by following step-by-step instructions, you can produce gorgeous painted rocks to give as gifts or even to sell.

My favorite things to paint on rocks are cats - when at rest, their lovely rounded shapes are simple to transfer to the 3-D form of a large round pebble.

I started by painting houses and cottages - they are a good introduction to rock painting; if you can draw a childlike picture of a house on paper, the you can do the same on a rock. Rock Painting - Houses & C...

This lens showcases some of my painted rocks and provides links for you to find more information about painting on stone.

Painting stones is one of my favorite things to do. I was inspired to start last summer by a wonderful Squidoo lensmaster, HysongDesigns. I'd never tried painting rocks before and my first attempt at a bumblebee was horrible. However, it was fun to do, so I persevered.

I spent last summer painting stones - when I wasn't out rock collecting - on the patio with the radio on quietly, the bees humming in the honeysuckle and sometimes even the sun shone.

I've now painted tons of rocks, well maybe not tons, but a lot. This page is dedicated to painting houses on stones.

Cornish Pasty Recipe

The Cornish Pasty is legendary throughout Britain, and indeed throughout the world. Although it's origins have often been challenged, Cornwall, that little sticky-out county in the far south-west corner of Britain, has been granted "Protected Geographical Indication". This means, that like Champagne, only a pasty with a pure pedigree, made in Cornwall to a traditional recipe can carry the name.

As a Cornish native, this is good news. I don't live in Cornwall any more and am often quite dismayed at the dismal offerings in bakeries sporting the label 'cornish pasty'. They seem to think if it's got mushy potato and beef of some description then it must be Cornish. This is plain wrong!

Here is the definitive recipe for a proper Cornish pasty. I hope you give it a try and I also hope you receive the understated compliment that my granddad always gave my granny, "Nice pasties, maid."

St David's Day

St David's Day is the national festival day of Wales

It is celebrated on March 1st all over Wales and by ex-pats the world over. It is a little like St Patrick's Day but not quite so green, drunken or rowdy!

St David or Dewi Sant, is the patron saint of Wales, although he was widely known in Cornwall (south-west England) and Brittany (France) as well. These areas were strongly linked back in his day as they shared a common language.

Art Journals for Children

Do you keep a journal? Do you wish you'd kept a journal? Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a collection of volumes from your early life that you could lose yourself in? Where you could wallow in memories as clear as cut glass and have your senses in the moment reawakened as you read the words and see the mementos from way back? Of course it's never too late to start and I have created other pages (links further down the page) to help you get going.

However, what I want to focus upon here is encouraging your child or grandchild to keep a journal. In particular an 'art journal'. An art journal is not just about getting words on pages - sometimes there doesn't even have to be any words. Often an image will suffice. Usually an image and a few words will express everything that needs to be said.

Change Your Handwriting, Change Your Life?

This page is not about how to make your handwriting prettier or more acceptable or how to do calligraphy or become a graphologist it is about changing your handwriting style to enhance your life.

How does that work?

Well, right now, I'm not sure. I'm about to embark on a 40 day program to find out. "Transform Your Life Through Handwriting" arrived yesterday and this page is going to be an ongoing review of whether it works or not.

Why now?

I've never been happy with my handwriting. I changed it a long time ago, deciding I wanted to write like my mother. I'm pretty sure that a graphologist or psychologist would say that imitating my mother's or anyone's writing was not a good idea. I do a lot, and I mean a huge amount of journaling and art journaling, and I would love my writing to look good on the page. If I can do that and improve my life in the process, then that's gotta be good. Right?

From gratitude journals to travel journals; from keeping a record of medications to baring our souls, our journals are often our very best friends. I use mine for recording appreciation for the smallest things, Zentangling, doodling, art journaling and just keeping 'to-do' lists. I am unable to resist buying blank books, notebooks and journals and my collection of filled, half-filled and still-to-be filled books are among my most precious possessions.

I've been exploring, gleaning and gathering some rather delightful examples to add to my stash... have a look.

Tropical Home Decorating Ideas

You don't have to live on a Pacific island or deep in a rainforest to add a touch of tropical delight to your home. You could apply a tropical theme to just one room; a child's bedroom or even just the porch, patio or veranda. It can be as fun or as grown-up as you like.

Tropical decorating covers a wide range of styles - from colorful Caribbean to sophisticated island resort to luxuriant rain forest and traditional colonial plantation. It is a very adaptable home décor scheme, as it can evolve from a simple, inexpensive look through to unashamed luxury.

Cupcake mania is about to fade away and Whoopie Pie rhapsody is about to take its place. Americans are quite familiar with Whoopie Pies but the rest of the world still needs educating about this most glorious cake... or dessert or sandwich. Whoopie Pies are quite difficult to classify. They are definitely not pies but they are cakes and they could be desserts and they are constructed like a sandwich. Whatever.

Cupcakes have had their day. It's time to introduce you to Whoopie Pies!

Looking for the best chocolate chip cookies you have ever tasted? Well so was I when I was browsing my cookery books for a delicious treat last Christmas. One of my favourite books is Nigella Express by the divine, Nigella Lawson, and, seeing her recipe for Totally Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies , I was inspired to give them a go. Well, I have to confess, I gathered the ingredients together and persuaded my lovely step-daughter to make them.

Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of our delicious triple chocolate cookies that time, but my youngest has persuaded me to make some for her birthday so here they are!

Photos are my own except where otherwise stated, and feature not only Nigella's chocolate cookies but my very own cookie-maker extraordinaire, Tegan, age 9.

Happiest Day of the Year

Happy Happy Day!

According to university tutor, Cliff Arnall's formula (O (N xS) Cpm/T He) June 17th will be the happiest day of 2012. As TheRaggedEdge is useless at math formulae (I thought a formula should have an '=' in it somewhere?), I am still waiting for confirmation of this....it might be the following week - June 24th.

Maybe we could make them both extremely happy days?

Incidentally (not that you would even worry about it), the worst day, the most miserable, the unhappiest day of the year is 23rd January 2012

Clover Needle Felting

Needle felting is the art of creating a dimensional fabric by using a barbed needle to interlock fine wool threads together. Colors can be mixed and pieces adhered to each other. Needle felted objects make wonderful embellishments for knitted and crochet accessories, they add texture to quilts and art quilts, they can also be made into jewelry.

You could use a needle felting machine which is similar to a sewing machine - both in looks and in price. However, if you are a beginner then Clover make a wonderful range of tools for you to hand make needle felt.

This page contains resources for the new needle felter.

Best Abraham-Hicks Quotes

After all these years of listening to, reading and watching Esther Hicks and 'Abraham', I am beginning to understand their teachings more clearly. Oh sure, I 'got' the Law of Attraction but learning to really use it and apply it to my own life has taken some doing. At last, I KNOW that the thoughts and feelings I am experiencing right now are creating my future; have ALREADY created my future. Understanding I have to change my thoughts right now; not tomorrow or next week, but in this red hot moment is what has finally helped me to create the life I have always wanted.

Join me and feel the truth by which I live my life. These are wonderful Abraham nuggets of wisdom. Are you ready to receive?

The Best Steampunk Books

If you find yourself entranced and amazed by fantastical tales of adventure invention and romance. if you've been drawn into a world of marvellous machines steam powered contrivances and glorious clockwork gadgets. if you yearn for lace-up granny boots or velvet waistcoats, then perhaps you are a steampunk aficionado - whether you know it, or not.

The word, 'steampunk' was first used by writer, KW Jeter, in a 1987 letter to his publisher. He used it to describe his particular genre of fiction. However, it has taken from then until now to be appreciated by a broader public audience.

Steampunk has evolved from the work of Victorian writers such as Jules Verne and HG Wells. Through the intervening decades it has been honed and polished by many others. On this page, I've attempted to gather in one place a treasure chest (machine riveted, of course) of steampunk resources - non-fiction to guide you on your quest for authenticity and fiction to inspire and delight.

So don your goggles, lace up your boots and follow me into the unknown world of alternate history.

This is where I live Well, I'm just over the hill....in a manner of speaking. Not so much a town as a pair of small ex-mining villages, sitting between the famous Rhondda Valley and the picturesque Vale of Glamorgan. It's hard to separate the two as one leads directly into the other and I have lived in both. So here is my definitive guide to this not-to-be-missed travel destination :-) This photo was taken on the hills up above where we live. I want to say a huge thank you to Alan, who has so very kindly agreed to let me use some of his glorious photos. More of Alan's work can be seen here: AJ Scapes.
Levi Roots' Reggae Reggae Sauce

Levi Roots took the UK by storm when he appeared on the popular TV program, Dragon's Den, in January 2007. Despite making a slight hash of his pitch, he secured a deal of £50,000 in return for 40% of his business. The rest, you could say, is 'sauce-story'.
Levi recently had his own TV show - a 4-part series "Caribbean Food Made Easy", (Aug/Sept 09), to coincide with publication and promotion of his book of the same name. Caribbean cooking is easy, fun, tasty and nutritious - great for one person... or a dozen. Why not give some of the recipes on this page a try? Here, you can find hints and tips for using Levi Roots' famous Reggae Reggae sauce, recipes for jerk chicken, pepperpot stew, salsa and more. Yummy!

10 Things To Make Me Happy

Joseph Campbell said, "Follow your bliss," and Abraham-Hicks tell us that "A happy life is simply a string of happy moments". With those quotations in mind, here are 10 suggestions of how to bring a little more happiness into your day.

These small things have a very powerful and snowballing effect. Some of them activate chemicals in your body. Some of them are to do with the energetic interaction between you and other people or you and your environment. All are designed to get the Law of Attraction working in your favor (it always does anyway).

Apart from the first and last ones, there is no particular order to follow. Wait for the opportunities or do them when you think about them. You can do them all, just some, or repeat and rinse as often as you like.

Keep them in mind; better yet, note them down and put them into practice as your day unfolds. I guarantee when you close you eyes as you snuggle down to sleep, you will congratulate yourself on having had a very happy day.

Tasty Winter Casseroles

Coming home to the comforting smell of a gently simmering casserole is one of life's greatest pleasures. The combined warmth of the kitchen and the intermingling aromas of tenderly cooked beef (or chicken, lamb or pork) and fragrant vegetables is like being hugged... if you can get a hug as well, then you've won the lottery!

Casseroles are so versatile, yet so easy to create, requiring no special skills or presentation. Ladle it into a capacious bowl, add a hunk of fresh bread on the side and you're done.
I've gathered together a few of my winter favourites - try them but don't be afraid to adjust, improve and add your own ideas to the basic recipes.

Note: A casserole is a type of one-pot meal, named after the vessel it is cooked in. Casseroles are similar to stews, except they are cooked in an oven rather than on a hob. Some casseroles have a topping such as potato or cheese.

Given the recent media attention to the growing movement of home-education in the UK, I thought it might be a good idea to straighten out a few misconceptions. Among them are that we do-it-ourselves parents are all a bit intense and serious. This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact the whole home-ed experience tends to have as many comic and surreal moments as Monty Python and Acorn Antiques put together. Mind you, cultivating a serious and intense expression can be very useful, as when you are trying to convince your mother-in-law that actually Transformers dvds are quite educational.

My Child is Obsessed with Lego!

I had Lego when I was a kid. All I made was houses. In fact, it was the same house over and over again. I had some basic blocks, a door, a few windows and two base-plates (one for the foundation and one for the roof). I got bored with it pretty quickly, preferring Meccano or my chalkboard.

It's completely different these days - there's so much available; a child can create anything they like with a little imagination and plenty of patience.

Home-schoolers, both parents and children, like Lego. There's plenty of educational value in them there bricks. We know that because.... well, we simply do. But what about when your child becomes obsessed with Lego? What about when you want him (or her) to learn some math or history or art and all s/he wants to do is build fighter jets? How can you divert their attention towards other subjects?

How about you just don't?

Maybe it simply needs to be looked at in another way?

Oh... yes, you can get other things with your Swagbucks, but for me, it is always about the books (and the bucks!). If you haven't heard of Swagbucks or haven't begun to take advantage of them, then pay attention!

Appreciate Your Way to Happiness

A happy life is simply a string of happy moments" - Abraham Hicks.

We are always looking for happiness. Everything we desire is a reflection of our search for joy. Every relationship we yearn for, every new book, new toy, new dress... we think each will increase our levels of happiness. Of course, it doesn't work. If we are unhappy on the inside, nothing on the outside is going be anything more than a temporary flare of good-feeling.

There are many gurus and teachers out there who espouse gratitude as the key to getting happy. And they are on the right track. We are exhorted to keep gratitude journals and to maintain a high level of positive-thinking. Pretty soon, though, being human, we tend to slump back to our usual level of sometimes feeling good, sometimes feeling dreadful and mostly somewhere in between... sort of idling along in neutral.

There may be a better way.... APPRECIATION

Croeso i Cymru! Welcome to Wales!

Wales has a population of around three million and is one of the world's modern Celtic nations. Rich in culture and heritage, the people of Wales are inordinately proud of their home.

Find out how much you know about the Principality of Wales by taking the quiz. There are, in fact, two quizzes on this page - the first is for non-Welsh people and the second is for people who know all about Wales - or should do, if they live here.

Please leave a comment at the bottom of the page letting us know how you scored. First, a little music from the Stereophonics.

British Native Pony Characteristics

Your little girl is ready for her first pony and you think that a hardy British breed would be ideal. A sweet Dartmoor or perhaps a tough Highland pony maybe?

Before you take the plunge, please read this definitive (and slightly tongue-in-cheek) guide to the characteristics and temperament of British native ponies. When you go to view your prospective new family member - and let's face it, you are considering bringing a new personality, if not into your home exactly, but right into the paddock next door, where he will be on view to all your friends and relations - you will have an idea which sort of predilection your chosen breed may be subject to.

Note: I have used 'he' throughout because geldings and stallions tend to exhibit these characteristics to the extreme. Mares also demonstrate these tendencies but usually to a lesser extent. An exception however, is in the case of the Welsh Mountain pony, where the indicated negative traits are more prevalent in mares and fillies.

A huge thank you to my sister-in-law, Jan, for the great cartoon horsies!

Evil Eye

Today I was offered a writing assignment which asked, "How to Remove Evil Eye?". I didn't take the assignment but it got me thinking about people who believe they have been cursed or put under a spell by another. As a professional tarot reader, I have been asked several times during the last 11 years about the possibility of the 'evil eye' and, indeed, someone I know quite well was convinced that she had been the victim of such a curse.

On this page, I hope to be able to reassure anyone who feels they have also fallen foul of black magic.

It may be so, but know you have the power to dispel any dark energy which has befallen you.

Herbs: Dandelion | Growing and Using Dandelions

The ubiquitous dandelion ~ Taraxacum officinale ~ has been besmirched by gardeners for generations. How we take this delightful plant for granted! The dandelion is one of the most useful plants on the planet - and we usually ignore it.

It grows worldwide in temperate regions and is known by many other names: Blowball, Cankerwort, Clock, Clocks & Watches, Fairy Clock, Farmers' Clocks, Lions' Teeth, Lionstooth, Old Man's Clock, Pee in the Bed, Priests Crown, Wetweed, White Endive and Wild Endive,

Dandelions are edible, drinkable and they can make you feel better. They even make great coffee - well not literally, but you can make great coffee from their roots.

Read on to learn what the dear dandelion can do for you.

Known the world over as a cheerful and easy to grow garden flower, Calendula officinalis, the marigold has long been prized for its versatility. Marigolds have powerful healing properties - the Egyptians considered them to be rejuvenating - and were used during the medieval period in a spell that would reveal the identity of their true love to young maidens. Even looking at marigolds is said to banish depression;

Also called Bulls Eyes, Common Marigold, Holligold, Marybuds, Pot Marigold and Souci. Shakespeare called them "merrybuds".

A very happy herb indeed

Herbs: Nettle | Growing and Using Nettles

There are several varieties of nettle, from mildly irritant Stinging Nettle (urtica dioica) to the virulent Devil's Leaf (urtica urentissima), which can sting so badly, it can cause death. This page will concentrate on the familiar stinging nettle, avoided by children everywhere (when my hubby was a boy, his sister pushed him off a gate into a patch of nettles. He was wearing swim-shorts at the time).

Nettles grow all over the place. When they appear in the garden, we pull them up - we don't want horrible weeds in our gardens! However, there is a case for growing a carefully-managed crop of nettles. Read on to see why.

How To Chop Vegetables Like a Pro

When first married, many suns and moons ago, I had to learn to cook from scratch. One of the tasks I disliked immensely was peeling and chopping vegetables, oh boy, was I slow! There was no internet back then and none of my books showed how to prepare veggies properly. I just did it the best way I could, remembering how my mother and grandmother did it. However, I wanted to use peppers, chillies, garlic and all kinds of lovely things that had never found their way into their kitchens, bless 'em.

So, if you are just starting out and need some advice on how to chop, dice and peel vegetables, you've come to the right place. I've gathered together a few videos and tips to make life easier for you.

Happy cooking!

A short profile of my favourite spiritual teachers.... and what a practical, easy-going lot they are too.

Esther Hicks is a down-to-earth mother-figure with a no nonsense attitude. Even she was taken by surprise when she began to receive messages from.... from.....well... from somewhere. During the last few years her following, as well as that of her husband, Jerry and their best friends 'Abraham', has increased enormously. If you've never heard of them and want to know more, read on!

Incidentally, I know there is a gramatical error in the title but this is a 'Who Is' lens and I can't change it!

UPDATE: On 21st August 2010 this page was awarded Lens of the Day. This might be a controversial choice as not everyone thinks that Law of Attraction is the real deal. If you have an opinion, join in the Law of Attraction Debate

UPDATE November 18, 2011. Jerry Hicks, whose inspired and relentless questions about life brought forth answers for all of us, passed to non-physical. Enjoy the party, Jerry!

My partner and I are generally keen on low-carb meals so I make this quite often. It is extremely filling so all we have with it is some salad leaves, coleslaw and a few pickled garlic cloves.

Here is my favourite recipe for Bacon Wrapped Chicken

My partner yelled down from his attic eyrie, where we have parked him and his computer, that I 'MUST' watch the YouTube video he'd just emailed me. That's normal for this house - we send each other emails; not so many arguments that way!

So I watched it. And once I heard Davy Knowles sing and play, I was hooked. You will be too.

Journal Bliss - Unleash Your Inner Eccentric!

Journal Bliss is a glorious, inspiring book, full of Violette's vibrant art.

Keeping a journal, whether written, sketched, painted or blogged on a webpage, is one of life's joys. I started keeping a written (on my laptop) journal about five years ago and nothing gives me more pleasure than to skip back through random entries from which pour so many treasured and not-so-treasured memories!

About the same time I discovered altered books and from there, art journals. It was like someone flicked a switch in my brain... you mean I can scribble, paint and draw in my journal - even if it means nothing to anyone except me? Let me at it!

To paraphrase Socrates: "The unrecorded life is not worth living"... well you know what I mean. The more I squirrel away my daily, mundane memories, the more I come to realise that they are all special, however trivial.

So that's why I bought this joyful, romping, delicious book for myself, my girlfriends and girl-family last Christmas!

UPDATE: And how exciting that the real, live Violette left a comment at the bottom of this page!

Mixed Media Art Journal

An art journal is a sort of diary with art in it. You can use it to record your thoughts, events in your life, your travels and, well... anything. It doesn't have to be written up day-to-day like a conventional diary - though of course if that's what you want to do, then go for it.

You might start by adding a small sketch to a journal page. Or glue in a photo. Or a train ticket. Then you could add some crayon for color. Before you know it, the journal takes on a life of its own and you have a mixed-media art journal.

This page isn't a 'how-to-make-an-art-journal' - there are other pages linked here that can show you how to get started - I just wanted to share a few journal pages I made recently.

November is National Beard Month

November is National Beard Month in the USA. Hairy faced men get to display and celebrate their (hopefully) natural facial shrubbery. Beardies often say they feel part of an exclusive club, which by its very nature, is restricted to adult males.

Did you know the study of beards is called "pogonology"? Santa knows it and he revels in being pogonias (bearded). Someone who is obsessed with beards is known as a "pogomaniac",

The wearing of a beard has a long and fascinating history, so sit down, stroke the nearest available hairy chin and enjoy exploring the beautiful beard.

Butter vs Margarine

Look at all that fat; all that heart-stopping cholesterol. Isn't it scary? Doesn't it make you want to run for some safe, healthy, non-dairy spread? Butter is extremely bad for us, yes? Eating saturated fats like butter, cream, full-fat milk and cheese clogs arteries and causes heart disease. We shouldn't even touch butter with someone else's knife.

If you agree with those statements then you are completely wrong. You have been listening to the misinformation freely given out by health advisers, margarine manufacturers and governments (particularly those who run nanny states).

Butter is NOT bad. It is GOOD. Very, very good. I'll tell you why.

I know, because I've done it too; you look in the mirror one day and there's an awareness that maybe the best times have passed. Often this can make us feel 'less than'. Well, never ever think that again. It is forbidden. I have spoken.

Let the good times roll!

Why would I want to create a mini-me? I hear you ask. Because it's fun, of course!

You don't need many materials to make a mini me and they don't take long to put together.

This is a great activity for kids and grown-ups. Kids love it because they are always enthralled with creating something that relates to themselves. Making mini-mes leads to great hilarity during the process. Snorts and guffaws ensue as people compare their little selves.

You can use your mini-me over and over - on cards and art journals, as your forum avatar, and many other places. You can also make mini-mes of your friends and family. They will be... er... enchanted. Yes they will.

So here are some examples and ideas for your own mini-me.

I've never been any good at housework. You'd think I would be ace after all the years I've had to practice, but no, I'm still rubbish. If I am ever good at housework its because I'm using it to avoid doing something else. Like a writing task or accounts work. Or my dear-un-husband (DuH) has really, really p***ed me off. I get lots done then.

So this page is about all the detestable tasks we grown-ups have to deal with... and, let's face it, it's usually the gurlies who are lumbered. Having said that, my clever sister has married a man who cleans - yep. He cleans, she cooks. I'm waiting for them to get divorced so I can make a claim on him. Just kidding, Wend.

The Original Scrapbox - Storage for Crafters

Last year I spent a lot of time and quite a bit of money making a workspace for myself, my laptop, my writing and my art and craft materials. We have a huge bedroom so I bought two 12 drawer storage units, a solid beech work surface, an artist's adjustable table, a comfortable executive chair and a bookcase. I painted and decorated, making it all creamy and bright. There's lovely, I thought, now I'm happy; now I have my special place... and then I saw these.
Huh!
The money I spent on all that stuff and I could have had this!

Focus Wheel Spell

Are you searching for an effective spell? A spell that really works. One which will bring the desired results as quickly as possible? Are you fed up with complicated spells with lists of ingredients as long as your arm and which cost a fortune? Are you a solitary witch in need of the perfect quick-fix magick?

Here's the spell I use most often. It works, I'd say, about 95% of the time. You don't need much to get going - just a pen, some paper and an old CD. If you want to make more of it then I have some suggestions to make your spell into a ritual.

Here it is, then, the Focus Wheel Spell.

PS Shhh... you don't have to be a witch to use this technique...

Thank you to Abraham-Hicks whose Focus Wheel process helped me to develop this spell.

Art For Toddlers

As parents, we are well aware that encouraging our children to paint and draw is extremely vital for so many reasons: creativity, expressing ideas, communicating, a precursor to writing and, of course, the pure fun of making marks on paper. It is fascinating to observe a toddler moving on from 'whole arm scribbling', which develops gross motor skills (shoulders, arms, elbows) to creating more recognisable images using fine motor skills (wrists, hands, fingers).

On this page I want to focus on some of the reasons why art is important to toddlers and what I discovered with my own children by including art as fundamental to the learning process.

All artwork on this page was created by my daughter, Tegan.

Myfanwy

Myfanwy, written by Joseph Parry in 1875, is one of those songs which once heard, is never forgotten. There is such beauty in the melody and melancholy in the words that the small hairs on the back of your neck rise up and tears well.

Some people think the song is based upon Parry's childhood sweetheart, and others say the song is based on the fourteenth-century love-story of Myfanwy Fychan and the poet, Hywel ab Einion.

I wanted to share this with you because it is one of my favourite pieces of music of all time. Here are several versions of Myfanwy and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Diolch. Thank you.

Tarot For Writers

The 78 cards of the tarot are not just for fortune-tellers and mystic introspection, they can be a useful tool for stimulating creativity. Writers, such as John Steinbeck and Stephen King, have availed themselves of tarot for many years. Tarot can be tapped into by anyone who is looking for inspiration.

Corrine Kenner in her book, Tarot for Writers, has attempted to put together a plan and a guide for incorporating tarot into your writing. She offers processes like journaling, games and writing prompts to get you started.

So does Tarot for Writers provide a useful, long-term approach for writing or is it merely a gimmick?

It is such a simple thing and if you try it for a single week, you will be a convert to the Law of Attraction.

Forget "The Secret"... that only gives you part of the story - it holds back on the one thing that puts you in control of your personal attraction. It's all about the vibration!

Living in Wales, we are blessed with a magnificent coastline bordered by wonderful and varied beaches. From wide sandy bays to tiny, mysterious coves, we have the lot. And our beaches are perfect places to conduct a seashore safari.

A seashore safari is simply a poke around the shoreline with the intent of discovering as many interesting animal species, plant life and objects as possible. There are some guidelines to be followed so that the safari is in keeping with good conservation and scientific practices - after all, we don't want to disrupt life-cycles and micro-systems - but the main objectives are to have fun, make discoveries and maybe learn something too.

I love Klutz. So do my kids. Klutz Chicken Socks imprint is a series created with young children in mind. There is such a wide range of Klutz Chicken Sock books/kits available, I thought I'd gather my favorites together.

Why Klutz? If you've never seen them before, Klutz are ace at putting together activity books - art, craft, modelling and science experiments to name just a few categories. Many of the kits are bought by adults for themselves. It's a great way to get started on a creative venture. Klutz kits contain all you need to start a new hobby.

Chicken Socks books are no exception. The difference is that the projects are geared towards younger children with less well developed motor skills. Everything is simple and easy to handle. Instructions are clear and fun. Get your child started on a Chicken Socks project and they will be happily absorbed for hours. Kits can be used over and over as, often, there are extra supplies available or you can supplement the kits with purchased materials.

Happy Klutz-ing!

My daughter loves these kits and has several with more on her holiday gift wishlist. The really great thing is that these books are so compact that Santa will be able to fit lots into his sack.

Tarot Techniques: The Two Card Reading

Fledgling tarot readers are often overwhelmed by the choice of spreads (layouts). Indeed, they are very likely to run before they can walk and begin with the famed Celtic Cross. Whilst a very valuable tool, the Celtic Cross is usually too complex for a beginner to understand all its nuances and permutations of meaning.

I thought it might be a good idea to offer up some suggestions for working with tarot pairs and simple two-card spreads.

They now have a shared custom-made computer station/workspace but both would have loved any of these gorgeous desks.

If you are racking your brains for a good present for a child, then consider giving one of these beautiful desks. Ideal as school homework stations and for home-schoolers alike, some are fun and some are fine pieces of furniture - most are both.

Encourage your child's creativity!

Best Books on Witchcraft

In the spirit of you can never have enough books and, if you are a witch, you really, really need lots of books, I gathered together a collection of my favorite witchy tomes. There is absolutely nothing better than settling down on a dark and stormy night with a glass of red wine, your familiar and a good pagan book.

I started with the heavy duty, background that all self-respecting witches need to know, and move on to the practical kind of witchcraft - running an enchanted home, creating a magical garden and basic spell work, for when you need magic in a hurry.

We home-school our children. 'School at home'? Well, not really. We don't follow a curriculum. We don't sit down to lessons. We don't have any structure to our days at home whatsoever. At the moment, we have no goals, no targets and no pressure.

As parents, my partner and I made an amazing discovery - our children actually enjoy learning.... as long as they are interested in what they are doing. A disinterested child cannot and will not learn. Common sense? Maybe, but our journey through autonomous or unschooling education is a real eye-opener for us!

How to Hand Wash Laundry | Hand Washing Clothes

No-one hand washes laundry any more do they? I am talking about all the laundry for the household, not just the odd delicate garment. What? Hand wash clothes? Wash sheets, duvet covers and towels by hand? Surely not hand wash jeans? Yep. Wash everything. With your hands.

It happened to me earlier in the year. Our washing machine died after a power surge. It was only four years old and the repair would cost almost what we paid for the machine in the first place. Our budget was pretty stretched already as we were soon to go on vacation. I decided I would have to just get stuck in and wash everything by hand until we received an expected refund from our power supplier (ironic, hey?). That was three months away. How was I going to cope?

Well, as it turned out, it wasn't so bad. It was summertime, which made things a lot easier. Here's how I did it.

Tarot Techniques - Sign Reading

This is Part 2 of an article originally written by theraggededge for TABI (Tarot Association of the British Isles).

In Part 1 - Moving Pictures, I talked about looking at the cards in a way that allows you to see how they interact with you and with other cards. Another way of pulling the right messages from the cards is the use of semiotic analysis. It sounds off-putting but it is quite simple and is one more implement in your tarot-reading toolbox.

Semiotics is, in the simplest sense, the study of signs. The aim of this article is to enable the reader to become aware of not just the meaning of the image on the card, but of the subtle signs which can elevate a good reading to a brilliant one. This is not the study of tarot symbolism other than the very basics, which you already know: - cups = water = emotions, etcetera.

There are well over 750 species of salvia; perhaps as high as 900.

Herbs: Bergamot | Growing and Using Bee Balm

Monarda, commonly known as bergamot or bee balm is native to north America. It is named after a Spanish medicinal botanist, Dr Nicholas Mondardes. This herb should not be confused with the citrus fruit, bergamot, which is used for flavoring Earl Grey tea, although you can add a bee balm leaf to China tea to get an Earl Grey flavor.

The native Americans who inhabited the region around the Oswego river near Lake Ontario made a tisane (tea) with the herb and called it Oswego Tea. They prized bee balm for its antiseptic qualities and its ability to treat colds and chest complaints.

Bergamot is a beautiful flowering plant and worth growing for its looks alone. However, not only does it look good, it smells delicious too. It grows to about 30 inches tall, depending on the variety (there are many!) and is ideal for garden or large containers.

Autonomous Education * Unschooling - Does It Work?

This little girl has never been to school. Now, at 10 years old, she is happy, friendly, sociable and enthusiastic about learning. So why do we, her parents allow her to choose her own educational path?

We practice, what is called in the US 'unschooling' and in the UK, 'autonomous education'. Autonomous education is child-directed, self-motivated learning. But kids don't want to learn by themselves, do they? Isn't that why we send them to school? So that someone with more knowledge and more experience can fuel up our children with that same knowledge? Don't we want our kids to learn stuff?

This page attempts to explain why we think going to school and following a set curriculum is not the best way for our children. Are you certain it is the best way for yours?

I've gone through my bookshelves and picked out a few of my favourite inspirational books. Books which have opened my eyes to new possibilities and new ways of thinking. I hope you like them.

"Taking Flight - Inspiration and Techniques to Give Your Creative Spirit Wings" is about a journey. Both the author's journey and the reader's... and also about how mixed media journaling provides a 'safe place' for self-expression and complete honesty.

You don't have to be an artist to enjoy this book though if you have already tried journaling or working in mixed-media, then you will find yourself inspired to create on new levels.

Delicious Anticipation

I wrote an article exploring the idea that appreciation is the key to happiness. As indeed it is. You cannot feel genuine appreciation and be depressed. You cannot feel real appreciation and feel anger. You cannot feel appreciation and feel poor. Appreciation is the shovel that can dig you out of negativity.

So let's say that you have cultivated a habit of appreciation. You still fall into the odd trough of negativity but you know that it's okay to have those feelings - they are there to remind you have the tool of appreciation to lever yourself back into feeling relief.

"OK," you say, "I'm out of my old way of negative thinking...at least I know that any difficult situation I'm in is always temporary, like all my past negative situations have been. So what's next?"

What's next is Delicious Anticipation.

Here is one way that adds a little twist to mending jeans and turns the repair into a customized-looking funky feature.

Low Carb Pancake Recipe

I love this quick and easy low carb pancake recipe. I make a version of this tasty recipe at least three times a week. It is incredibly filling and pretty much carbohydrate-free, depending on what you add to it.

Delicious for breakfast, convenient for lunch (hot or cold) and tasty for dinner (make a pizza with it!). You can even substitute it for bread in sandwiches and grilled cheese on toast.

I have included suggestions how to use the recipe in several other low-carb variations.

All photos are copyright by theraggededge. You can use them but must include a live link back to this page.

Klutz for Boys

Having two sons myself, I know how difficult it is to engage their attention. Klutz does it every single time! Their books and kits are absorbing, witty, fun, and, dare I say it, educational. There are many Klutz activities geared towards girls and they have been showcased on other pages. This time I wanted to focus on the wonderful titles available for our lads.

Klutz are the perfect gift for children - from the very young up to... well... the very old. Truly, there is no upper age limit. I buy Klutz books for myself as well as my kids.

The three founders of Klutz Press were all young and male, so the many Klutz publications reflect their interests. Luckily, those interests are typical of boys the world over, so step inside Klutz for Boys (of all ages!).

Don't Teach That Child to Read!

Well, stress no more.

Many of us homeschoolers, who are just beginning the exciting and often scary adventure of teaching our children, understandably become anxious at the prospect of teaching our babies to read, let alone solve simultaneous equations. It is so tempting to try to guide and direct the child in the reading process; I did it and I expect you think you have to do it too. But... listen up... I have come through it and out the other side and I have learned a great big fundamental truth:

YOU CAN STOP RIGHT NOW!

Yep, just stop it. Unless your child is thrilled and loving every moment of you both stumbling through baby books, trying to painfully sound out each syllable, then attempting to put them together, make words and then realising you've both lost the plot altogether.

This is a radical idea and not everyone will like it but I have some alternative suggestions that might work for you, as they did for me.

Thanks to Daniel Pink for the photo.

We're all familiar with National Geographic magazine. Over the years it has accompanied us on our journey through life, inspiring many to travel to far-off destinations while the rest of us are content to simply expand our knowledge from the comfort of our armchairs. Often we want to revisit a memorable article but have you ever tried to track one down through back issues?

Here is something no household should be without! Complete National Geographic- Every Issue Since 1888 DVD.

Imagine having every single issue, 120 years' worth, right at your fingertips!

It includes every page, every photograph, every map and even every advertisement from 1888 right through to 2008. There is also a bonus DVD with "Best Moments of National Geographic" and hints, tips and narratives from top photographers.

So for you I present the ultimate Christmas getaway: hibernation. Of course, as with any other vacation, hibernation requires some measure of planning. It also requires some necessary co-operation from friends and family.

Fear not, I am here to help you organize your blissful escape and suggest some indispensable supplies to help you through the horrible nightmare that is Christmas.

Woodland Management, Coppicing and Crafts

Throughout England and Wales, there is a resurgence of interest in woodland management. With sustainability being the new watchword in UK countryside conservation, there has been a similar revival in the ancient art of coppicing - a method of cropping wood from the same tree over and over again.

In the UK there are several organisations that promote the care of valuable woodland and they are keen that the old skills are passed down to the next generation. Our home-schooled son has recently completed a basic skills course in coppicing and he loved it. We thought it would be a good idea to share his experience and expand our knowledge of woodland management by putting this page together.

However, while low-carbing, I discovered that a couple of squares of very dark chocolate satisfied my chocolate craving instantly. So what is it about the mysterious cacao bean that enhances human existence so well?

This is page is an exploration of chocolate its raw or near-raw state. Chocolate - pure and simple!

Tarot Techniques - Moving Pictures

Would you like another way of seeing the cards? Often as we develop as readers, one of the pitfalls is sticking with the same old interpretations. It's possible for our readings to get to get stale before we even realise it is happening. 'Moving Pictures' is a technique which offers an alternative way of seeing tarot cards which can bring the sparkle back to your readings. Use it with your interpretations, allow the technique to suggest new possibilities and always say what you see - tactfully, of course!

Herbs: Catmint | Growing and Using Catnip

Nepeta Cataria, also known as Catmint, Catnip, Catrup, Catswart and Field Balm, is a minty, sometimes lemon-scented herb that is beloved by cats everywhere. After a nibble or a roll around in a bed of catnip your cat will be in a state of euphoria. Dried catmint is used to stuff cat toys.

Originally from Europe and Asia, the herb was given the name Nepeta after the Italian town where it grew abundantly. The 'cataria' part was added when it was observed how delightedly the neighborhood cats frolicked and zoned out on the stuff.

But catmint isn't just for cats.

Tapping Into Your Inner Muse With Tarot

Writers are constantly wishing they could simply tap into some cosmic dictating machine in the sky. A conduit from which would pour forth ideas, words, sentences and whole books neatly delivered to their brain, ready for downloading and immediate consumption. Imagine a Star Trek-like replicator ready to provide you with all you desire at the push of a button.

Of course, writing isn't usually like that. Generally we have to dredge the sentences out from our resistant brains and its a painful process.

Have you thought about using tarot cards to jump start your creativity? I promise you don't have to turn into a weirdo!

State Of Fear

My D-uH (Dear un-Husband) had been nagging me to read this book for quite some time but I resisted. I knew that I would have to be in a particular frame of mind to enjoy it. Last week, I was looking for something to read and State of Fear called out to me.

I found myself riveted by the plot, pure adventure and action mixed up with convoluted machinations of the pro-AGW brigade to keep milking their cash-cow for all its worth. However, although the issue centres on global warming, the main theme of the novel is social control by government. Michael Crichton does an excellent job in exposing the hidden agendas by those on whose leadership we depend.

I love stories which feature science, technology, heroes and villains and State of Fear has them all in spades.

The author has provided references to his resources throughout the book and a detailed bibliography is also included. I was fascinated by his use of actual temperature charts and graphs as part of the story. There are a couple of instances where he has maybe overused the devices by which his characters impart information, both to other characters and, of course, to the reader. This can look a bit clumsy. However, this was probably unavoidable if he was to get the message across in full.

It is interesting that the Amazon reviews comprise almost as many 1*s as 5*s. It is easy to see that many are upset by or disagree with the viewpoints put forward. If nothing else, the book has got people thinking about the issues surrounding climate change and government control.

Read it and make up your own mind

Fennel has a reputation, rooted in ancient times, for quelling hunger pangs. It was used by Anglo-Saxons, Romans and Greeks to control obesity and to cope with fasting days. It was commonly used during the Middle Ages to flavor stews and, presumably, to make people feel fuller after a meagre meal. In addition, it helped to make food well past its best, taste more palatable.

The whole plant can be consumed, from roots to seed, so discover what fennel can do for you and why you should consider growing fabulous fennel in you herb garden.

Klutz publishes hands-on kits for children to discover all kinds of things. I particularly love the Klutz science kits for our home-schooled children. The books are always good quality and written with the kind of humor that appears to kids. They contain everything necessary to carry out experiments - clear directions and supplies. Most have practical suggestions of how to expand on the material.

Other benefits of Klutz is that grown-ups love them too! Many a grown-up has learned stuff they never thought they needed to know. Another benefit that appeals to adults is how a Klutz book will absorb a child for hours on a long journey. Silence is golden.

Start experimenting with Klutz!
