Hanbok: Tradtional Korean Garment

The roots of the Korean hanbok can be traced back to the Joseon Dynasty in reference to formal and semi-formal clothing that was typical of the time. Today, hanboks are still worn at formal occassions such as weddings, festivals and important holidays such as the lunar new year and Chuseok. Occasionally, you can see elders strolling down the street in more casual hanboks that are made of cotton rather than silk. All hanboks consist of tops and bottoms. Differences occur in colour, material and style. In this lens, I hope you will find a lot of information about hanboks.

My main reason for drawing is because it is fun. While I am still an amateur, I hope to achieve a higher status through continual practice. If you really like to draw, here are a few tips that I find motivational: 1. Display your work on your refrigerator or wall for visitors to see. 2. Give a creation to a family member, relative or friend as a gift. Sometimes the picture itself is fine or you may want to fold it into a greeting card. Either way, they will love it. 3. Check out ebooks on painting and drawing. I was surprised at the large volume of information. 4. There are also lots of ebooks on cartooning. 5. Carry a book and paper with your everywhere and doodle, doodle, doodle. I sketch on subways, in between classes and while waiting to use a bank machine. 6. Try marketing your creations or publishing them. You never know. 7. Get a small white board or slate of some sort and doodle during TV commercials. I really enjoy this. 8. Do you keep a written journal? Why not add your own illustrative pictures or doodles? 9. The internet has mountains of sites on how-to-draw. To get your exploration in motion, visit the Online Step By Step Drawing section on this lens. 10 YouTube has great how-to-draw cartoon clips. Just go to YouTube and try a search. 11. Get a how-to-draw book. I have listed oceans of books on drawing cartoons and manga in this lens. 12. Check out some animation, clipart and other graphic sites. This lens has some links. That is all I have for now but if you like drawing, especially cartoons, why not check out some links below?

Using Pictures in ESL Lessons

When using a picture, I start by asking questions. If you look at the photo on your left, for instance, you may ask: How many people do you see? What are they doing? Once you ask a few questions, give learners a chance to write a few questions in pairs. Those learners can ask their question and you have a discussion.

Or perhaps you have met him already. While his real name is Forsythe, Jughead, answers to many nicknames including Jug, Juggie and Needlenose. Jughead and Archie are, without a doubt, the best of friends despite their obvious differences in personality. Archie, for example, constantly thinks about girls while Jughead's main concern is filling his stomach. In addition to his pointy nose, Jug's other tademark belongings include his beanie crown and the letter 'S' on his sweater. While even his friends are sometimes put off with his seemingly introverted disposition, Jughead is the one whom they all come to for advice on just about any problem. Jughead is never too busy to help because, after all, he claims to be allergic to work. For more insights into Jughead and the gang, check out my other lenses: *Archie Andrews & Friends *Betty & Veronica *Reggie Mantle *Big Moose Mason *Riverdale High School Faculty

Here I am opening a package of valuables that I mailed to myself while vacationing in my native Canada. The box contained my Archie digest collection that I've had since I was a kid. Do you perfer Betty Cooper and if so, why? Is it her humble background and beginnings as the daughter of Alice and Hal Cooper? Is it the fact that she is often seen working a part-time job, doing homework or assisting somebody in need? Perhaps you favour Veronica Lodge? Ronnie is the daughter of Hiram Lodge, the richest man in Riverdale. Veronica is often seen driving fancy cars, buying lots and lots of clothes and other high-class activities. Although they are so different, Betty and Veronica are actually close friends. However, when it comes to Archie and certain other guys, both B and V will work to outmanuever, outsmart and outdo each other. They are friends but, at times, they are rivals. In the end, however, the bonds of friendship prevail over their spats.

Why do you need high-tops? The answers is simple: ankle support. You can twist an ankle by slipping off a curb just as easily as doing a lay-up on a basketball court. Furthermore, if your ankles are sturdy, your knees will also be sturdy. I wear high-tops for everything from walking to hiking. Even though they take a few seconds longer to put on then low-tops, they are an excellent investement. For more information about high-tops, check out Charlie's Sneaker Pages, The Evolution of the Chuck Taylor High-Top and the information in this lens.

Engrish is Fun

Anyone involved in language learning is well aware of the fact that mistakes are inevitable. In my opinion, the best way to learn from the mistakes is to laugh at them and continue down the path to linguistic development. The term Engrish is used to denote linguistic errors in the English language that originated in Asian countries. The errors are mostly due to an incorrect letter, word or translation. For example, if you use an 'r' rather than an 'l', you will end up with 'fright' rather than 'flight. Now, imagine seeing that mistake on billboards, airport signs, books and other forms of public language. To start your Engrish journey, I recommend Engrish.com. It has loads of Engrish organized into several themes like clothing, snack foot, automobiles and much more. Of course, you can find links to other sites. Remember that these sites are really not necessarily intended to poke fun at Engish-language learners but rather to generate laughter and, in many ways, expose difficulties that people have grasping the idiosyncrasies of English-speakers. To get a glimpse of Engrish, check out the video clip below and maybe even the book from Amazon.

Five-Pin Bowling

Sunmi, my wife, had a lot of challenges the first time I took her five-pin bowling. The ball was so light that she was practically whipping it down the alley. In addition, she kept sitting down after throwing two ball in each frame forgetting that in five-pin, you are allowed three chances. Whenever I return to Canada, the first place I go to is a five-pin bowling center. I like five-pin because, unlike an enormous 10-pin ball, I can cup a five-pin ball in my palm. Since the ball is so light and small, five-pin is a popular sport among people of all ages. To learn more about this sport, from it's humble beginnings in 1905 to the present, please check out the links and insights in this lens.

An Aardvark Named Cyril Sneer

Until I saw the memorable pink protagonist Cyril Sneer on The Raccoons, I was never concerned about aardvarks. Cyril however, not only made me aware of aardvarks, but his continual series of plots to take over the Evergreen Forest also reminded me of the importantance of nature. So, here is a lens for Cyril. Cyril, the tycoon, started as a lumber baron bent on cutting down every tree in the Evergreen Forest. He is head of Sneer Industires. Although the company's speciality is not really known, it is clear that Cyril dabbles in the stock market and is always driving to acquire anything even remotely connected to profits. Once, he built a fake mechanical sea serpent in hopes of attacting tourists to Evergreen Lake. By creating this legenday monster, Cyril hoped to build a theme park and charge outrageously prices for rides, snacks, souvenirs, parking and accomodations. To secure his theme park, he bought up all the surrounding land. In the end, the Raccoons at the Evergreen Standard newspaper, led by Melissa, Bert and Ralph, exposed Cyril's plot. As a result, Cyril ended up with loads of useless souvenirs and land that he could not sell. Over the years, he has lost a lot of money due to his impulsive desire to generate quick cash. One time, for instance, he invested in an elevator shoe factory because he was convinced that every short person in the world would want to look taller. He ignored the fact that the shoes were extremely heavy and therefore, impractical. He ended up with a warehouse of unsold shoes and almost lost his mansion in the fallout. Cyri's son, Cedric often questions his father's impulsive behaviour in conversation with his best friend, Bert Raccoon. While Cedric does the books, his main interests are cooking and avoiding his father's get-rich-quick schemes.

You have most likely asked yourself this question at some point while admiring a rainbow. After a shower, I always run outside in hopes of seeing a rainbow. Rainbows, of course, are inspirational. Many stories, lengends and songs are about rainbows. Many are familiar with the legend of the pot of gold under the rainbodw. But what is a rainbow? How is it formed? That is the question that this lens addresses.

The small Canadian town of Hartland, New Brunswick, is about an hour's drive from my hometown of Johnville. This town hosts a marvel in tourism: the longest covered bridge in the world. Whenever I visit, I am often stuck with the thought that there apears to be more tourists in the town than permanent residents. In this lens, I will provide links about the bridge as well as some photos.

Born in 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas continues to delight children of all ages. I've personally viewed it at least 100 times. The plot revolves around an adorable round-headed boy striving to find the true meaning of Christmas among the glitter and commotion of commercialism. Are you, however, familiar with some subtleties that add a little more personality to the story such as what Lucy really wants for Christmas or which character does not appear in the story? If you're interested, try this quiz on Fact Monster. If you'd like to see more of the gang, visit the official Peanuts web site.

Archie Andrews & Friends

I cannot pinpoint when I first picked up an Archie digest. Most likely, it was a Jughead with Archie one. What I do know is that my father has been after me for almost 20 years to clear the boxes out of the attic. Occasionally, I have removed some digests to use in my English lessons. Archie Andrews, a read-headed teenager, is no stranger to trouble. One time, Betty and Veronica wanted to go canoeing but since Archie didn't have enough money to rent a canoe, he built a wooden raft. Although the raft seemed to float, Archie didn't know enough to keep away from strong currents and it wasn't long before the three ended up on the rocks. Mr. Lodge, Veronica's dad, also knows that Archie is a magnet for trouble. Archie has broken almost everything in the Lodge mansion from a priceless vase to the foundation in the swimming pool. These are only two of numerous Archie adventures. I hope this lens will lead you to more fun with Archie.

i-to-i TEFL: Learn, Teach, Travel, Learn

Teaching abroad is truly an awesome experience. I know because I have done it in two countries. In Japan, I went over on the JET Programme and, a few years later, I ventured to S.Korea. Not only do you get experience, you also learn a great deal about other cultures and have direct exposure to a foreign language. Living in a foreign country, in my opinion, is the best way to learn a language. Whether you only plan on one year or several years abroad, this is an enriching experience. However, before growing abroad, you need certification and training. This is where i-to-i TEFL can prove valuable. There are various training programs both in-class and online. You can also choose where you would like to study and work. There are also volunteer opportunities. If you are interested, why not explore further?

Reggie Mantle

Alright, I admit that Reggie Mantle is not the most loveable character in the world or Archie but, you have to admit, that life is never dull when Reggie is near. Over the years, Reggie has crowned himself with egotistical tags like Mantle the Magnificent, The Great One and God's gift to women. To a certain degree, his elevated ego is justified. After all, he excels at high school sports like hockey, American football and basketball. However, his drive to fame usually overshadows his playing as was the case in a hockey game. While captain of the team, Reggie deliberately provoked opposing players into fights. While Reggie spent most of the time in the penalty box, Archie led the team to victory with his hard work and goal scoring. As a result, Coach Kleats made Archie the new team captain. Although Reggie protested this decision on the grounds that his brawls made him popular with the fans, Kleats maintained that the Riverdale team needed a hockey player more than it needed a crowd pleaser. Unlike his rival Archie Andrews, Reggie is rarely penniless and has an easier time keeping dates. Reggie's constant pursuit of Veronica Lodge usually results in battles with Archie Andrews. Of all of Reggie's antics, practical jokes are his most prevalent. His usual victim is Archie. On many occassions, Reggie plots to get Archie clobbered by Big Moose Mason. To do this, Reggie tries to convince Moose that Archie is chasing his girlfriend, Midge Glump. Everyone knows that even the mention of Midge's name results in a bruising from Moose. Reggie's pranks are not limited to Archie, everyone, including Principal Weatherbee has had experience with rotten Reggie. Surprisingly, Reggie not only enjoys his jokes, but he also takes pride in his rotteness.

Untalkative Bunny

Who could not like Untalkative Bunny? Since this adorable, yellow rabbit never speaks, his name is appropriate. You may see him bouncing on a camel, driving a sports car, riding a scooter or experiencing a short adventure with one of his many animal friends. Of all the episodes, my favourite is Bunny and Beaver. When Bunny's TV breaks down, he goes to Beaver's apartment to watch TV. Bunny quickly learns that his interests and Beaver's interests do not meet. Kids will love watching UB's adventures in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. Who will he meet? What problems will he encounter? How will he address those situations? If you want to see one short animation now, check out the clip from YouTube.

ESL Teaching in S.Korea

The photo on the left shows me in a hanbeok, a tradtional Korean garment. I only wear hanbeoks when I am teaching ESL. Of course, you don't have to wear one; it is just my personal choice. For me, wearing a hanbeok is one of the pleasures of living in S.Korea. If you are interested in exploring other pleasures, this lens provides a great deal of information on how to work as an language instructor in S.Korea. When I first came to Korea in 1999, the focus was on teaching English conversation but, over the past few years, the demand for more specialized courses like composition, TOEIC and science through English, has increased dramatically. Therefore, Korea holds many opportunities for language instructors, researchers and material developers.

Big Moose Mason

At 6'2 and 250 pounds, it is obvious why Moose is called Big Moose. His size gives him an obvious advantage in almost all sports. It also give him an advantage when it comes to his girlfriend, Midge. If another guy even says Midge's name in public, Moose usually responds with a clobbering. Both Archie and Reggie can attest to this. While Moose's jealousl temper often embarasses Midge, she tolerates it nevertheless. Sometimes, Moose can do too much for Midge. Like one time when he offered to carry her books home from school, he picked up Midge and carried her as well. Unlike his teenage friends, Moose does not excel at school. In fact, when his teacher, Miss Grundy, asked Mosse to explain why he got all but one answer incorrect on a quiz, Moose's replied by stating that nobody is perfect. For years, many believed that Moose was just a big dummy. Moose himself admitted it on many occassions. After being tested one day, however, it was discovered that Moose suffers from a learning disability known as dyslexia. Typical characteristicss of dyslexia include problems in processing language and numbers. For this reason, people with dyslexia often have problems spelling and reading. As a teacher, I have seen many students, all male, make errors that are typical of dyslexia learners. A common error, for example, is confusing the words 'saw' and 'was'. Despite his shortcomings, which we all have, Moose is a loveable character of the Archie world and even though his temper flares from time to time, he has a lot of friends.
