A horse-crazy girl's Christmas wish come true: Sweet Surprize

This is a tribute to my first horse -- one of those types that comes along once in a lifetime, and that's if you're lucky. Along with memories, I hope to share a little bit of helpful advice as well.
My second horse

The story of my second horse, a foal to raise as an inexperienced horse-crazy girl, our close bond, mistakes we made, and a tragic end.
Not mine.

I absolutely love his spots!
My third horse

Had a unique "lit candle" marking on her face, and the strangest hoof-shaped permanent indentation (scar tissue?) on her side.
Mustangs' fate uncertain.

They Shoot Mustangs, Don't They?

Is the wild horse part of America's history? Will it soon be nothing but?
Not mine.
She acquired Tiff for FREE when the owners decided to have her put down because they didn't need her, and she was 'old' -- she was only about 15 years at the time.

My fourth horse

She was meant to a Walkaloosa but was neither gaited nor spotted.
What is a Walkaloosa?

What do you get when you cross a smooth gaited horse with lots of spots? The strangely named breed is relatively a new creation but these horses with Appaloosa markings and smooth four-beat gaits are nothing new, and much more than a cross between t...
My fifth horse

Sans Marque was a breeding stock paint yearling gelding that I WON through a raffle. He was technically my first husband's horse.
He was very sweet and gentle, with a lot of promise, and we sold him to a nice home who would better help him find his potential.
My sixth horse

My second BLM Mustang, this time a stallion that refused to be gentled.
Was just plain lucky the first time around with an untrained adult horse, and Miskwa Andek (Ojibway for Red Crow) never let me forget it.
My seventh horse

Wassessi Gissis ... 'the sun is brilliant'

My eighth horse

Lovely old gal that brought a lot of smiles her final year.
My ninth horse

Life circumstances forced sudden sale.
My tenth horse.

He isn't perfect, but he's perfect for me. I love my fluffy old buddy. He's in his late teens, he's constantly overweight no matter the season, and he's as furry as a Shetland pony. He's not beginner safe, his hooves grow too fast and chip easily,...
Not mine.
She was a grey Arabian/Morgan cross that was sold to a great home out of state where she is now a pampered princess.
Not [exactly] mine.

Buying or selling a horse? This could happen to you!

Horse dealers, or horse traders, can have as bad a reputation as a used car salesman ... or worse. But they're just doing their job, making a living, getting by and feeding their family, right? Buyer (and seller) beware: the internet has made the h...

The Standardbred: Harness Race Horse or Gaited Riding Horse?
-
Best known for harness racing, the versatile Standardbred is often retrained as a saddle horse and is able to learn several smooth gaits such as a stepping pace and a rack. Some excellent speed racking horses are full-blooded Standardbreds. Many rescu...
Not [exactly] mine.
He was a gaited pony that I bought for my kids.
In the end, he proved a little too much for my beginner to handle, and we found him a home with more confident young riders.
Cysco appearances
You may find Cysco featured on the Mountain Horse lens ... he was a Kentucky Mountain Horse (or could have been, if he had come with papers).-

Not mine. Ours. Or maybe just his.
He was started as a Big Lick horse, and was a stallion until the age of 5. We bought him at 6 and have only used him for trail riding.
Zeus the model
Zeus is shown as an example of a Tennessee Walking Horse.-

A well bred and trained Tennessee Walking Horse does not trot under saddle. Instead, this breed has at least three speeds at which it can "walk" ... a very smooth four-beat gait with no bounce. You'll hear the terms flat walk, dog walk, and running...
