Taijiquan in its complete form

is an integration of self-defence, self knowledge and self well-being.

T'ai Chi is a way of life that has been practiced by the Chinese for thousands of years. T'ai Chi means "the ultimate." T'ai Chi encourages the fulfillment of the individual person, yet also emphasizes that this goal should be achieved through moderate, natural ways of living.

Followers of T'ai Chi believed that people should discipline themselves to be spiritual, healthy, kind, and intelligent; to be responsible for assisting others to reach the same levels of achievement; to enjoy the truth; to fight fearlessly against immorality and injustice; and to protect the needy and the weak. It was with these goals in mind that the martial art aspect of T'ai Chi came to be developed and emphasized. T'ai Chi theories were easily applied to the martial arts. Mind and body harmony, in tune with the natural order of things, was at the core of T'ai Chi. This offered a direction of development completely different from that of other forms of fighting techniques.

It also yielded awesome results in terms of human abilities coming from the power of the mind. Thus T'ai Chi Ch'uan became the most powerful martial art ever known.

Family surnames came to be associated with the different styles of T'ai Chi that were being passed on, mouth to ear, from generation to generation -- for example, the Ch'en style, the Yang style, and the Wu style. Many of these are still known today. Each style was distinctive, but all followed the classic T'ai Chi principles.

The Long Form

Most of the popular forms today evolved from the Yang. Tai Chi started out with 13 basic movements and kept expanding until it reached 108 movements. All these movements are actually only variations on the basic 13. There are now many shortened versions of this long form, in fact not that many people teach and practice this long form.

The main reason is the length of time for practice. The long form takes 20 minutes to go through, so when you start, you are committed to 20 minutes of concentrative exercise. If you don't have that much time for some reason, the form is divided into three sections that can be practiced in 5 or 10 minutes.

TAIJIQUAN AND THE QI CONNECTION

... I once asked my teacher, Master Chen Xiao-wang, "What is the essence of Taijiquan?" I was expecting a complex answer. Instead, he simply said, "It is all about the interaction of Yin and Yang and Qi circulation." He said that Qi, our vital force, is a bit like electricity. It requires a polarity of negative and positive, or Yin and Yang dynamics for it to flow. The movements of Taijiquan, if executed properly, with correct breath and mind intent, will provide the polarities to activate and to maintain qi flow to nourish our body and our mind. Illnesses result from qi blockages and qi deficiency, which Taijiquan can prevent from happening. The Seven Emotions will affect our health and well-being because they are also forms of qi blockage. Unless we gain control of our qi circulation, we have no hope of being healthy, let alone being enlightened.
~~Howard Choy
Taijiquan and the Qi Connection
Whenever I introduce Taijiquan and Qigong to a new audience, invariably I am asked the question, "What is the difference between Taijiquan and Qigong?"

"If you practice for one day you get one day's benefit, with daily practice you can steadily improve. If you don't practice for one day you lose ten days of development. So practice everyday without stopping! Western students must understand this clearly. Practice everyday!" ~~Chen Zhenglei, 19th generation Chen Family

Essentials of T'ai Chi

Yang Chengfu's Ten Essentials insured that the practice of Tai Chi Chuan would improve people's health. It is impossible to overstate the importance of these Ten Essentials in identifying the elements that make Tai Chi Chuan a healthful practice. Without the Ten Essentials, it is doubtful that Tai Chi Chuan would be recognized all over the world as a unique exercise system that offers special benefits to those who practice it.
