Yao Ming is a Great Role Model for Young People

Yao Ming is the world's most celebrated Asian athlete and is from the most populous nation, China. Playing center for the Houston Rockets, Yao has recently overtaken the mantel of top NBA center over his rival/friend Shaq and has shattered many stereotypes and silenced numerous critics along the way. With his continued rise in the NBA and in sports, Yao has been a breath of fresh air for those who value old fashion values such as hard work, respect, loyalty and humility. Yao is not just a great role model for Asians but for all young people around the world.

    Yao the Family Man

Yao Ming & Wife Ye Li

Yao is a great family man and a good role model for the traditional family nucleus. He is a loving son who is respectful of his parents. Yao is disciplined on the road as well. Around the NBA, Yao is known to stay away from clubs and the party scene instead choosing to stay in and watch videos to improve his basketball skills. He recently married his long-time sweetheart Ye Li who has been his girlfriend for 7 years. Yao used to wear a red bracelet given to him by Ye during all his games. He choose the No.11 for his jersey because it reminded him of Yao & Ye and he customized his BMW with a special tag in tribute to his love for Ye. Yao has also stated that he wants to have a large family of his own one day but that he is putting that aside for the time being as he has responsibilities to his country and many charities. Yao has proven to be a wonderful son and boyfriend and in time I think he will show that he is a great husband and father too.

Yao Has Character & Maturity Beyond His Years

Yao Ming faced much adversity when he first came into the NBA with many 'experts' calling him a dud and predicting he would fail. Shaquille O'Neil even went as far as to mock Yao in a racist way taunting, "Tell Yao Ming, Chingchongwahahsoh!" Instead of calling Shaq on his inappropriate behavior, the media blew it off as comedy as they too thought Yao Ming was a big joke and did not welcome him. After Yao came into the league and struggled early, Sir Charles Barkley called him a bust saying he would kiss Kenny Smith's ass if Yao could score more than 19 points in a game. With all the animosity he was facing how did Yao respond?

Yao responded like a MAN. He quietly made fools of all his critics by working hard and performing well where it counts, on the basketball court. He did not resort to the childish mud-slinging tactics of his detractors and even went as far as to make excuses for Shaq and Barkley's rude comments to diffuse the situation. Yao showed incredible class and character at only 22 years of age and during this difficult time in his life and he continues to show why he is a true role model for young people all over the world.
