Is It Time for a Change?

There is a growing movement across the country to hold classes year round. There are many reasons, including student achievement, efficient building use, and the need for childcare for working parents.

Traditionalists counter that the extended summer vacation allows older students a chance to have jobs, supports resident camps, and gives children a chance to relax and be children that they so desparately need.

Check out this summary of the pluses and minuses of year round school-some interesting points on both sides!

How Did It Start?

In the US, our traditional school schedule, with its week-long spring break and twelve-week summer holiday, was a direct outgrowth of our agricultural roots. Families need all hands to assist with planting in the spring, tending the crops in the summer, and harvest in early fall. The school year was built around the ebb and flow of agricultural life.

Now that most of us are no longer farmers, the schedule lingers on. Is it time for a change? Let your voice be heard!
