Growing Up: Daisy isn't a puppy anymore!

She was born on June 5, 2008. She's a puppy in this picture, but now she's over one-year old! She's Daisy, our yellow Labrador retriever.

We got her when she was six-weeks old. I didn't want a puppy, didn't want to go through the chewing and the housebreaking, but it didn't quite work out that way. Our friends got a lab who happened to meet a boy lab and, as nature would have it, Daisy and her seven brothers and sisters were born. I had my eyes and ears open, looking for the perfect adult rescue dog, but these little yellow lab puppies needed homes, too, and the rest is history. History in the making, that is.

This lens is about Daisy, making history at our house.

A Litter of Yellow Labrador Puppies

This isn't Daisy's litter, but it could have been! Her mom is a yellow lab and her dad a chocolate lab, which explains Daisy's lighter nose and brown "eyeliner."

Daisy's First Road Trip , Age 7 1/2 Weeks

Time to meet Rocky and Adrian.

Our son and his wife have two dogs, 80 pound Rocky, the boxer, and his "little" sister, Adrian who's a wolf-shepherd mix. Adrian is a 60 pound sweetheart, but she wasn't crazy about having a puppy around when we went to visit, especially since Rocky and Daddy were paying a lot of attention to the silly little puppy girl.

Rocky is typical boxer with a great hangin' out tongue - and Daisy fell in love with that tongue! Rocky was as gentle and as patient as he could be with Daisy, which was a good thing since she would even grab his tongue. When we separated them in order to give everyone a break, Daisy would hang her tongue out, too, copying Rocky. She had never done that before and has never done it since, but the entire visit she would stick that tongue out just as far as she could.

Here's a picture of Rocky and Daisy comparing tongue sizes. (Rocky won.)

She's Growing Up!

Happy Half-Birthday to Daisy!

On December 5th, Daisy was six-months old! How time flies. She weighs about 54 pounds now and will be a big girl, a little on the high end of average for a female lab, when she's full-grown.

This week she apparently is cutting more teeth because she's been chewing even more than usual. This morning, after she had pulled apart a cardboard box lid and a few other little things, I realized all the chewies she usually keeps around for munching (the rawhide chews that we give her) seemed to be missing, so I gave her a new one. It was chewed up and devoured within half an hour, which is certainly a record for her. She usually chews on them over the course of several days, but not this time. That was the last one, so we'll be making a chewie run later today.

She's also started digging in the yard a lot, natural behavior for a dog of course. We keep her in a limited area where she can do that, but it's still a little disheartening to see the holes again; it's been awhile since we lost our last dog and the grass had all grown in again. Oh, well. At least she's having fun!

Here's a picture of Daisy taken a few weeks ago, in my shadow. Her eyes are a blue-green color and everyone who meets her comments on them.

Daisy's Half-Birthday Gift

It's really for us, but don't tell her that!

Did you know that even short-hair dogs shed? They do! If you have a dog, you need this, which is also available for and works well on cats. Take a look at the video on the product page. They're not exaggerating. This tool will get rid of that excess under coat and help with shedding for months, or so I've been told. My living room floor hopes so.

Daisy, Daisy In Song

Often when I think about Daisy, this song comes to mind.

There are lots of references to Daisy and daisies, of course, including the "Bicycle Built for Two" song. I looked for various versions of the song on video and Daisy seemed to like this one the best. She cocks her head back and forth when she listens to it. Must be the chipmunk voices! When I sing it to her, she jumps up on my lap. Well, her front part is on part of my lap, but she tries.

Daisy on MP3

I found out that the "Bicycle Built for Two" song is actually called "Daisy Bell." I've known the song all my life, but I didn't know that.

Here are several versions of "Daisy Bell" or "Bicycle Built for Two" or "Daisy, Daisy," depending on who you ask, all available for immediate download on MP3. Or just click to listen to snippets.

Daisy's Having a Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Daisy! You'll be one-year old on Friday, June 5th!

It's hard to believe she's a year old already. We've come a long way, Daisy!

Some of Daisy's favorite things:

  • Dandy. Our big cat is her favorite playmate. He likes her, too. Most of the time.
  • Treats. She likes typical doggy bone type treats, but she really enjoys rawhide chews. When I ask her if she wants a chewie, she barks twice to let me know that she does. If I'm slow about getting it, she barks three times!
  • Light. Oh, my goodness, when the sun shines through the windows and makes lights and shadows on the floor, Daisy loves it. This time of year the sun shines through the kitchen window in the mornings. She'll stare at it (like she's doing in the picture) and wait for it to "dance" as it does when the wind blows the tree in the back, making shadows. What great entertainment!
  • Walks. Daisy loves to take walks. She enjoys her long walks up to the far end of our road and back, but she even enjoys walking with us up to the mailbox or to get the newspaper. If you say, "Daisy, do you want to go for a walk?" you'd better be prepared to get the leash and head out the door!
  • Company. She loves it when someone comes down the driveway. If it's one of our grown kids, she gets so excited she jumps for joy! Fortunately, they like her, too since sometimes she jumps on them (but she's getting better about that).
  • Soccer. We still play soccer in the yard for exercise. All we need to do is say, "Daisy, where's your soccer ball?" and we're in for a good game.
  • Dad. Daisy likes me just fine, but when her Daddy comes home from running an errand or even if he just comes onto the porch, headed inside after working outside, she can barely contain her excitement until he's through the door. When he's inside, she is his shadow, following him from room to room. She certainly knows how to bring a big smile to his face, and to mine.

Daisy's 1st Birthday Gift

She really, really needs a new Frisbee. Since she's a chewer, I'm getting her this soft Kong version.

Kong Rubber Flyer Red

Last year's hard plastic version, which Daisy could catch very well, is now cracked and covered with doggy teeth marks. It still flies, sort of, but she still enjoys playing with it. I read the reviews for this Kong Rubber Flyer and I think it will suit her very well.

Daisy Does Love Her Daddy

She's getting him this card for Father's Day. Click on it to see what she wrote inside.
