Are yellow nails getting you down?
There are four common causes of yellow nails:
First, if you are a heavy smoker the tar and nicotine in cigarettes can stain your fingernails and skin surrounding the fingers you use to hold your cigarette.
Second, extended use of nail polish can deprive your nails of the oxygen required for health nails and the pinky color associated with good nail health. Dark nail polish, if worn constantly over a long period, can also leave a yellow stain on your nails.
Third, yellow nails can be caused by a nail fungus infection. Known as Onychomycosis, nail fungus is a common nail disorder that results in a yellow discoloration of affected nails along with other symptoms such as nail thickening, a build up of crumb-like debris under the nail, flaky nail edges and, if severe, detachment of the nail from the nail bed.
Fourth, yellow nails are a side effect of a rare disorder known as "Yellow Nail Syndrome" or YNS. YNS is a serious disease that is also associated with respiratory problems, a compromised lymphatic system and fluid around the lungs.

Ok so I understand a little more about yellow nails...
..but how can I get rid of them?
If you are worried about yellow nails, it makes good sense to see you doctor so that you can get a definite diagnosis of what is causing the discoloration. You can them move forward with treatment options with confidence. For cosmetic improvements in the color of your nails, there are some home remedies that you could try including a vinegar soak or lemon nail bath. Neither of these are likely to be effective in curing the problem but may reduce the yellow discoloration of your nails.
If nail polish could be the cause of your yellow nails, all you need to do is stop wearing nail polish for a while and your nails should revert to their normal color. Also remember to use a clear protective base-coat under your nail polish as this may help reduce yellow nails. Smokers, you know the refrain. Quit smoking and your fingernails (and surrounding skin) will change back to their healthy color.
And if you have a nail fungus, this is a curable condition. You'll have to stick to a treatment regime over a period of time, but if you do, you should be able to get rid of the fungus. FungusFacts.com has reviewed a range of nail fungus treatments and set out the pros and cons of each so that you can make an informed decision of the options that are available.

- If you think its a nail fungus infection then you should begin treatment as soon as possible. Infections are easier to cure before they penetrate the lanula (the crescent shaped lighter area at the base of your nail). While on holiday you could wear a tea tree nail polish to cover up the nail and prevent it's spread. This is not a cure - so start a course of treatment as soon as you get back.

- I'm off to Belize and am worried that people will see my yellow nails on the beach. Reading what you say above. I think the cause is a nail fungus infection. (I don't hold cigarettes with mmy toes!)
