Yellowstone National Park Vacation Guide

Waking up to snow in Yellowstone National Park was quite a site. Certainly not what I expected while camping in the back of a Ford pick-up truck in July. I knew something was wrong when my husband wore a stocking cap to bed. Thank goodness for my in-laws. They bought us a night's stay in the Yellowstone lodge on Lake Yellowstone. I was ready to go home but after a night in a warm room, a hot shower and food from a menu, I was ready to see more of what Yellowstone had to offer.

The beauty is beyond words.

We hiked up Mt. Washburn and big horn sheep met us at the top. Watching my husband reel in Yellowstone cutthroat trout on every cast was unbelievable. Bison walked leisurely through our campsite and moose roamed the edge of the lake. Numerous hiking trails canvas the park.

There is truly something for everyone here! Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter!

Happy Camping!  Remember a stocking cap!

Yellowstone Backpacking

Yellowstone Backpacking
There are a number of companies that can assist you in getting into the heart of Yellowstone's backcountry. Many of these companies are located in the gateway communities surrounding the park and you will be able to start your backcountry adventure from one of these towns. Whether you are looking at a backpacking trip or heading in on horseback, these companies will be able to get you geared up and provide a safe experience for you, your family and friends.
Hiking Yellowstone
Yellowstone National Park, encompassing 2.2 million acres, is one of America's premier wilderness areas. Most of the park is backcountry and managed as wilderness. Over 1,100 miles (1770 km) of trails are available for hiking. However, there are dangers inherent in wilderness: unpredictable wildlife, changing weather conditions, remote thermal areas, cold water lakes, turbulent streams, and rugged mountains with loose, "rotten" rock. Visiting wilderness means experiencing the land on its terms. If you choose to explore and enjoy the natural wonders of Yellowstone, there is no guarantee of your safety. Be prepared for any situation. Carefully read all backcountry guidelines and regulations.

Should you drink the water? Intestinal infections from drinking untreated water are increasingly common. Waters may be polluted by animal and/or human wastes. When possible, carry a supply of water from a domestic source. If you drink water from lakes and streams, bring it to a boil or use a water filter to reduce the chance of infection.

Yellowstone's weather is unpredictable. A sunny warm day may become fiercely stormy with wind, rain, sleet, and sometimes snow. Lightning storms are common; get off water or beaches and stay away from ridges, exposed places, and isolated trees.

This full-motion, live-streaming webcam is located near Old Faithful Geyser and brings online visitors views of several other geysers in the area. When geysers such as Beehive, Lion, or Giantess are erupting, the camera will be aimed at them and zoomed in for optimal viewing enjoyment. When bison, elk, coyotes, or the occasional bear wander into the camera's view, live video images will be transmitted. We hope you enjoy your virtual park experience!

A Tour of Yellowstone

Yellowstone National Park Film

Yellowstone National Park is the world's first national park, and the birth of a great idea of preservation. This short film covers a lot of the northern half of Yellowstone National Park, including Norris Geyser Basin and Canyon area, Gardiner, the North Entrance Arch, along with Dunraven and Tower Falls, plus more. Also in film: Bison, Elk, and more wildlife. Catch the stunning Yellowstone sunset at the end, amazing. Yellowstone National Park is a magical place, go there if you ever get the chance. Work there as well, you can work and play there in the park all summer, and make some money too. I have worked three summers there, and met amazing people.
