PEDDLIN' CANDLES IN THE OLD WEST
Howdy There! I'm Goodness Nose. I run the genr'l store here in these parts. I wanted to tell ya a story about candles back in our days:
"Back in the earlier part of the 1800's a lot of folks were still makin' their own candles. They would melt down the fat off their cows or sheep until it was liquid. That's called taller'. Talk about stinkin'! Ya had to do it outside 'cause it'd put so much smoke out that a feller would half choke to death!
But anyways, when folks would be butcherin' for the winter, they'd make up the candles. They'd put a wick on a stick and dip it over and over in the taller'. Purdy soon they'd have themselves two candles on each side of that stick hangin' down. I remember one time when my maw made some candles and forgot 'n set 'em too close to the fire. Talk about a mess! They had a few candle makers, I think they called them fellers chandlers, anyways.. they had some of 'em around durin' this time, but us poor folks made our own.
When I got growned and got a wife of my own, you know her, Mama Nose down there at the laundry scenter, well, me 'n Mama would sit out on the front porch and we'd braid wicks together. Our fingers would be plumb wored out! Miss Bessie down at the boardin' house, well, her Aunt Opal had a secret idea about makin' candles that would last a lot longer than the ones my maw made! Lord but that woman wouldn't tell us her secret!
There's been a lot of changes in candle makin' while I been growin up. This here new kind of candle that's out is what I stock in my genr'l store. You oughta check 'em out. They smell right purdy. Why, I can smell 'em thru the box when the stagecoach brings 'em in! They smell a heap better'n them horses do out front of the saloon! But here, you go check 'em out fer yerself.
And there's a shop over yonder in East Texas that has 'em.. if ya visit that little lady down there, she'll even send ya some of that candle mashed up, so you can smell it 'fore ya buy one! Go see her here!
Looky here at this here candle I burned in the store the other day. It smelled plumb like apple pie. Folks come in from the saloon thinkin' that I had went 'n got one of Granny B's and was hidin' it!"
That thang just burned and burned and burned! You can bet yer bottom dollar that my maw's candle wouldn't hold a candle to it! hmm...anyways.. I'll let you fine folks git on about readin the rest of the paper here.
Here's a map to all the places around town if'n ya git lost, and I'll see ya folk's 'round abouts.

THE EDITOR'S COLUMN

I created this Old West Town Series so that through the influence of a wild west theme, early americana and with a western drawl, I would have a way of introducing a line of gourmet jar candles, votives and bath/beauty products that I distribute. I've included everything from the General Store to the Doctor's Office, and from the Cafe full of desserts to the Photographer's, & there's even a Travel Agency!
Along with this lense being the town's newspaper, there are 11 "shops" in this series, and the Sheriff's jail. There is talk of gunslingers, horseback riders and shootouts throughout this town and the townsfolk are earnestly trying to win stars from you the reader. Once they have earned enough stars, then they'll have a sheriff!
There are quite a few characters around this old west town and each one has high hopes of earning stars. By that, I mean in your ratings. So please take the time to rate these pages. Without your vote, this town will never have a lawman! Once they are able to help reach lense of the day, then they will get their sheriff! So vote.. vote..vote!
I would like for the readers to have a say-so in this town. So think up a good name for this town and submit it in the guestbook! After we've collected a few names, will have a vote on it.
ATTENTION:
The folks of this town IS lookin' for sellers. If you fit the description of the character here, then please git in touch with the editor!

A Whole New Way To Enjoy Gettin' Warshed Up!

Hi there! I'm Bessie and I run the boardin' house here in this town. It's the only place in town where you can go 'n git warshed up, unless ya do like them no count cowboys at the saloon and warsh in the horse trough. I have the only clawfoot bathtub in this part of the west.
Did you know that that they didn't even get a bathtub in that white house where the president of the United States lives until 1851? No! They waited and waited, 'cause them doctors used to tell 'em that bathin' would make ya sick! Yeah! They said them germs would roll around in that water 'n sink in yer skin! Outlandish I tell ya!
My pappy and mammy always tole me that cleanliness was next to Godliness, so a bath's gotta be good for ya!
Speakin of bathtubs, have you ever made soap? Lord, you talk about some work!
My mammy would take fireplace ashes 'n put em in a real thin cloth she had 'n pour water over 'em. She let that water run out through that cloth and catch it in a big jar pitcher. Pappy would build a fire under this big ol' cast iron pot 'n put some taller in it 'n melt that down 'n when it got good 'n hot, Mammy would pour that lye outta that pitcher in the pot. They'd stir it 'n stir it 'n stir, lawd it felt like they stirt it all day but I know they didn't. After they stirred it a while, they'd pour it off in some big square pans that Mammy kept out in the barn. She'd put 'em up on a shelf 'n let 'em cool off for a whiles before she'd cut 'em up into bars. Us kids learnt real fast not to leave the soap in the water or out in the sun. Mammy would switch us somethin' awful for messin' up all their hard work like that 'n wastin!
You'll havta come by the boardin' house 'n see the soaps I have over there! Why you can warsh yer body and yer hair with it! I seen a man was shavin' with it the other day! Sed it made his skin right smooth and his wimmen folk liked it! All I know is havin' the stage bring it to me sure beats havin' to make my own! Come by 'n see me now, ya hear?
It's here! It's here!
Mineral Makeup
Them gals finally got that new shipment in of min'ral makeup. Back in old days though, a gal could lose her husband if'n she wore make-up while they was courtin'. Them fellers said they was deceived cause they didn't really look like that! My granny told me about that. It happened way before her time.
Get yourself all gussied up for a night on the town or for pickin' beans!
