Internal Styles of Chinese Kung Fu

Internal training is the highest level of martial arts. The 3 most popular today are Hsing I Chuan (form-will-fist), Tai Chi Chuan (The Grand Ultimate Fist), and Pa Kua Chang (8 Changes of the Palm).

Tai Chi Chuan

The grand ultimate fist

Tai Chi Chuan
Perhaps the most popular of the internal arts in the western world is Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi has gained popularity and interest because of it's benefits related to health and longevity, but it was initially developed to demonstrate supreme martial power. Tai Chi is based on the principle of yielding and deflecting 4,000 pounds of force with a mere 4 ounces. A Tai Chi practitioner uses an opponents energy against themselves. As an attack is attempted, the Tai Chi student redirects the energy output against the opponent themselves.

Hsing-I Chuan

This is the form that depends on the will of the fist

Hsing-I Chuan
Hsing-I Chuan is linear based and focuses on channeling the Chi (energy) from your chamber, up the spine, and out of the arm delivering a devastating internal strike. A Hsing-I Master will strike before he realizes an opening is available in an opponent. It is based on the five elements: metal, wood, fire, water, and earth

Pa Kua Chang

The eight changes of the palm

Pa Kua Chang
Pa Kua Chang or Bagua Chang is based on circular movements, side-stepping motions, and quickness. A Pa Kua master can disappear from in front of your face and before you even know it, tap you on the back of your shoulder.

Unlike Hsing-I Chuan which is very linear in nature, Pa Kua uses the theory of circular movements. Power comes from the twisting of the waist and if an opponent attacks, a Pa Kua student evades by side-stepping keeping the close distance for a counter-attack.
