The Yoga Pilates Craze

(Thank you for taking the time to visit my lens. I hope you like it and please remember to rate too!)

Trends come and go. Be it fashion, weight loss methods and even architecture. Fitness is no different. The trend now is training both the mind and the body for a well balanced person.

Yoga and Pilates focus in not on physical strength and stamina, Instead, it focuses on flixibility, posture and often use for stress relief.

But which is better? After all, you only have 24 hours, a third of which you spend sleeping. I only want to do one of them!

What Is Pilates?

Pilates is named after the guy who invented it, Joseph Pilates, who initially used it rehabilitate WWII soldiers.

It is designed to strengthen, tone, stretch, encourage proper breathing and improve posture. There are many different types of Pilates, but the main idea is to strengthen your core muscles (abs) so you can better support the larger ligaments, tendons and joints.

Pilates are known to heightens your body awareness and improve agility, flexibility and strength without boring repetitious movements like weight lifting.

What Is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient exercise originating from Northern India over 5000 years ago that aims to unify the mind, heart and body.

Practicing yoga can change your life. Your breathing patterns, your outlook on life, your health and your mind! True yoga is a kind of moving meditation. When a person is doing yoga, they are also training their mind while training their body.

Physically, its aim is to create balance through developing strength and flexibility. It does this through a series of stretches, relaxation and breathing practices. Yoga often utilizes the body's weight instead of external mass. A lot of attention is paid on the flow from one posture to the next.

Benefits Of Yoga

  1. Improved muscular strength
  2. Better posture
  3. reduced fatigue
  4. better ability to concentrate
  5. excellent way to manage stress
  6. reduce pain and stiffness
  7. increase flexibility

Benefits Of Pilates

  1. Stronger muscle and better tone
  2. increase body awareness
  3. increase concentration
  4. more lung capacity and thus better circulation
  5. an excellent way to reduce stress and relaxation
  6. improve posture and rehabilitative qualities

So Which is Better? Yoga Or Pilates?

Which is better, soccer or basketball? It really depends on your need and preference.

Yoga is for those who likes some quiet time for themselves and meditate. You have to be persistent with yoga because it is not easy to master a pose. Yoga is also considered therapeutic, because it is believed that when the mind and body unifies, the body can heal itself.

Pilates is similar to yoga but involves exercises on the pilates machine and matwork, although these are only for advanced practitioners. Pilates main focus is to strengthen the core muscle (abs). It is not as difficult as yoga and are often straight forward and result can be achieved faster than yoga. Pilates doesn't require much patience, relative to yoga, but instead requires lots of discipline to keep to the routine everyday.

So that is the difference between yoga and pilates. If you still don't know which one to do, do them both at once. It's called Yogilates. You can find out more from the books available by scrolling down.
