There are around 80 postures, but most people practice only 20 or so. Wear loose clothing, with nothing in your feet. You cannot do yoga on a bed; you must work on a non slip yoga mat or the floor. Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach, which is why many people do it when they wake up. Wait for three hours after a meal before you do your asanas and try to find a regular time, ideally before breakfast or your evening meal.



Classes usually start with stretching exercises and asanas are interspersed with deep relaxation and breathing exercises. They end with the corpse pose, a powerful yoga weapon against stress. Never in a hurry or strain yourself and if you cannot do a full posture so as much movement as you can. Keep your movements slow and graceful and hold asanas for between 20 seconds and two minutes.

In yoga it is important to do counter postures when you stretch like bend backward after bending forward, stretch to the left after stretching to the right and so on. Work to your own limit, breathing slowly and holding for a few seconds. You may feel a bit of discomfort when you go into a stretch, but if you take it slowly, no harm should result. Both postures and breathing exercises help respiratory disorders such as asthma, hay fever, bronchitis, sinusitis, colds and coughs.

People with asthma tend to have shallow breathing, and yoga movement deepens the breath and induces relaxation, dissipating any tension that might lead to an attack. Start with breathing exercise to calm and relax you. Yoga breathing exercises will help you develop good breathing habits and can alleviate your asthma of hay fever symptoms.
