Avant-garde Artist, Peace Activist & Widow

Yoko Ono is perhaps best known as being the widow of Beatle legend, John Lennon, with whom she became synonymous with the expression "Give Peace a Chance." She has gone on after John's untimely death in 1980 to become one of the major Peace Activists and for this reason is one of my SuperHeroes.

On her own, Yoko is an avant-garde artist and musician who has been pushing the boundaries of art and music since the 1960's.

Three reasons to admire Yoko Ono

  1. She has been at the forefront of experimental treatment of art and music since the 1960's.
  2. She has been a constant and vocal advocate for Peace.
  3. She's a Survivor.

Yoko Ono is the most controversial woman in rock-n-roll history. The former great wall of hair, the avant-garde experimental performance artist with the primal, screeching vocals, blamed for everything from Lennon's leaving the Beatles to his changed political views and musical sound, has reinvented herself since his tragic death as a brave survivor, savvy businesswoman and gay icon.

extensively documented book finally gives Yoko Ono her due as a protean conceptual and performing artist, YES Yoko Ono is no celebrity bio. It is actually a rigorous analysis--by experts in modern Japanese and contemporary Western art, performance, video, and music--of the innovative approaches that made Ono a seminal avant-garde figure in the Fluxus movement of the 1960s and continued to influence her work during the next three decades.

The Imagine Peace Tower

The Imagine Peace Tower is an artwork conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of her husband John Lennon, fulfilling a dream to create a peace tower.

The construction and installation of the tower has been a collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavik, the Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy.

The work is in the form of a wishing well from which a very strong and tall tower of light emerges. The strength, intensity and brilliance of the light tower continually changes as the particles in the air fluctuate with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions unique to Iceland.

The Imagine Peace Tower is dedicated to John Lennon and Yoko Ono's message of peace and bears the inscription of "IMAGINE PEACE" displayed in 24 languages.

Every year the Imagine Peace Tower will light up between October 9th (Lennon's birthday) and December 8th (the day of his death). In addition the tower will be lit on New Year's Eve, during the first week of spring and other special occasions determined by the City and Yoko Ono.

100 Acorns

100 days of conceptual instructions by Yoko Ono

It's been 44 years since my book of conceptual instructions, GRAPEFRUIT was first published in 1964.

On 15 June 1968, John Lennon & I planted two acorns for peace at Coventry Cathedral. It was the first of our many Peace 'Events'.

In the summer of 1996, I picked up from where I left off, and wrote 100 ACORNS.

Starting on the 40th anniversary of the Acorn Peace Event on 15 June 2008, I will publish here an 'Acorn' every day for 100 days.

After each day of sharing the instructions, you should feel free to question, discuss, and/or report what your mind tells you.

I'm just planting the seeds.

Have fun.
Love, yoko

The Wish Tree

The Wish Tree

Since the 1990's the Wish Tree has been a part of many peace-promoting art exhibitions staged by Yoko Ono. With the Wish Tree, people are invited to write their wish on a piece of paper and hang it to a tree branch.

Some wishes of the wishes are deeply personal, others global wishes for peace and better future for all of humankind.

Yoko sees the Wish Tree like a collective prayer in a way. People are encouraged to keep wishing as they participate.

Yoko Ono Addresses the United Nations

Let us wake up, come together,
and work on cleaning and healing our planet,
instead of further destroying it.
Let's not waste one more day in creating a machinery of destruction.

Give us a chance.
On behalf of ourselves and all species on Earth.
We can do it.
We must.

In the spirit of peace high profile artists such as Green Day, U2, Black Eyed Peas, Snow Patrol, Postal Service, Regina Spektor and more came together in one tribute album covering songs by John Lennon.

Yoko Ono generously granted rights to John Lennon's entire solo songbook to Amnesty International, the world's largest grassroots human rights organization, to use as the centerpiece of this project and to inspire and invigorate a new generation of human rights activists.

Proceeds from this album go to aid Amnesty International in the fight to Save Darfur, Sudan.

Give Peace a Chance!

In 1969 during the Vietnam War John Lennon and Yoko Ono held two week-long Bed-Ins for Peace. It was their non-violent way of protesting wars and promoting peace. The first was held in Amsterdam, the second in Montreal.

Early in the Bed-In, a reporter asked John what he was trying to do. John said, "All we are saying is give peace a chance."

The song, "Give Peace a Chance" emerged as part of the Montreal Bed-in and was ultimately recorded and released. "Give Peace a Chance" was the first "solo" single released by a member of the Beatles while the band was still intact.

The song, Give Peace a Chance, has become a peace anthem and is often sung at peace events, John Lennon Remembrances and anti-war protests.

On June 1, the last day of the bed-in, John posted lyrics on the suite's walls for a spontaneous group recording of all who were still visiting the famous couple to sing harmoniously to the world the now universal anthem for peace "Give Peace A Chance."

From the product description: In 1969 John Lennon and Yoko Ono has just gotten married, and more than happy to be together, they want to change the world.

Lying in a hotel bed surrounded by journalists, they announce their mission for peace and invite the rest of the world to symbolically climb into bed with them and share their dream.

People call them silly, naive, even ridiculous, yet one famous couple's bed-in spread new hope that there really could be an end to war, hate and violence.
