A Lens About Yorkies by a Yorkie

I'm Aspen, a Yorkshire Terrier, but most people just call me a Yorkie. I'm not up to dog show standards, but I'll tell you more about that later. I was born next door so got to know my owners right away. Two of them saw me the minute I was born, and came to see me all the time, until I finally moved into my new home in the summer of 1999. They took lots of pictures that you can see at my blog

I keep hearing the people at my house telling everyone I'm a purebred, but they don't have papers, and I'm not a show quality Yorkie. I'm not sure whether that bothers me or not...I see what some of those show dog Yorkies have to go through, and don't think I'd like it much, but that's just me. I am sharing show dog standards below. I'm sure there are lots of Yorkies who are proud to make their owners happy by being in dog shows.

Even though I'm not a show dog, I love to show off for my owners, and they love me, feed me, give me treats, give me tummy rubs. I have all that I could ever want.

I weigh about 7-8 lbs, and have curly hair, my Dad had curly hair, and my mom had straight hair. As I update my lens today, I'm 12 years old, a "senior dog", but am happy to know that healthy small dogs live longer than healthy larger dogs. Am I a healthy yorkie? I've had my challenges, but I share more about them at my blog, Aspen the Yorkie.

The picture above of two Yorkies in a basket is of me (left) and my brother - we were taken for our puppy visit to the vet in a basket that day.

Huddersfield Ben - Yorkie that set the standard

Perhaps the earliest Yorkshire Terrier

Huddersfield Ben Painting Print

Huddersfield Ben (born 1865 - 23 September 1871) - "An early Yorkshire Terrier, universally acknowledged to be the foundation sire of the breed. In his day Ben won many prizes, both as a show dog and in ratting contests. He was even said to have been hunted. He had tremendous influence in setting the breed type for the Yorkshire Terrier, a new breed still under development in Ben's day.

At the age of 6, Ben was run over by a carriage and killed. After Ben's death, his body was preserved and kept under glass, which allowed many to see this famous dog long after his death."

Show Dog Standards for Yorkshire Terriers

From what I read below, even though I think I'm pretty cute, I'm not a show dog. The American Kennel Club provides the following Yorkshire Terrier Breed Standard for show dogs...please click here for more information.

Toy Group

General Appearance:

That of a long-haired toy terrier whose blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of body. The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self-importance.

Head

Small and rather flat on top, the skull not too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long, with the bite neither undershot nor overshot and teeth sound. Either scissors bite or level bite is acceptable. The nose is black. Eyes are medium in size and not too prominent; dark in color and sparkling with a sharp, intelligent expression. Eye rims are dark. Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart.

Body

Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump.

Legs and Feet

Forelegs should be straight, elbows neither in nor out. Hind legs straight when viewed from behind, but stifles are moderately bent when viewed from the sides. Feet are round with black toenails. Dewclaws, if any, are generally removed from the hind legs. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be removed.

Tail

Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back.

Coat

Quality, texture and quantity of coat are of prime importance. Hair is glossy, fine and silky in texture. Coat on the body is moderately long and perfectly straight (not wavy). It may be trimmed to floor length to give ease of movement and a neater appearance, if desired. The fall on the head is long, tied with one bow in center of head or parted in the middle and tied with two bows. Hair on muzzle is very long. Hair should be trimmed short on tips of ears and may be trimmed on feet to give them a neat appearance.

Colors

Puppies are born black and tan and are normally darker in body color, showing an intermingling of black hair in the tan until they are matured. Color of hair on body and richness of tan on head and legs are of prime importance in adult dogs, to which the following color requirements apply:
Blue: Is a dark steel-blue, not a silver-blue and not mingled with fawn, bronze or black hairs.

Tan: All tan hair is darker at the roots than in the middle, shading to still lighter tan at the tips. There should be no sooty or black hair intermingled with any of the tan.

Color on Body

The blue extends over the body from back of neck to root of tail. Hair on tail is a darker blue, especially at end of tail.

Head-fall

A rich golden tan, deeper in color at sides of head, at ear roots and on the muzzle, with ears a deep rich tan. Tan color should not extend down on back of neck.

Chest and Legs

A bright, rich tan, not extending above the elbow on the forelegs nor above the stifle on the hind legs.

Weight

Must not exceed seven pounds.

Disqualifications:

Any solid color or combination of colors other than blue and tan as described above. Any white markings other than a small white spot on the fore-chest that does not exceed 1 inch at its longest dimension.

How to Groom Your Yorkie

Why Pay a Groomer When You Can Do This Yourself

My owner used to pay anywhere from $40-$50 to have me groomed every couple of months, but now she grooms me herself. It's not really that hard. She says it's like doing a furry sculpture. Like many, she is feeling the effects of things that are happening in what humans call "the economy", and this is one way she can save quite a bit of money. Just think of all the food and dog treats you can buy with what you save!

I think I look pretty good after she's done. It costs 1/2 to less-than-1/2 the price of a grooming to purchase this helpful grooming resource, click here for more information. The link leads to a very appealing site with more information.
