How can anyone resist such an adorable face? We have really enjoyed our Yorkshire Terriers over the years, especially the one who joined our family when we moved to the United Kingdom in 2004.

This site brings together some photos, blogs, and resources for those considering a Yorkie, or for those who have discovered the joy of this little, fearless creature.

Top Reasons For Owning A Yorkie

So what makes the Yorkie such a special breed? Here's a list of advantages in owning one of these cuddly little balls of fur.
  1. Small and extremely portable
  2. Yorkies do not shed their coats
  3. Small appetite makes them economical
  4. Great temperament for elderly & families
  5. Very intelligent & easy to train
  6. Absolutely fearless of other animals (regardless of size)
  7. Waste clean-up is minimal
  8. Yorkies travel well, if kennel trained
  9. Content as an indoor pet
  10. Easily concealed while working, shopping or dining out (just kidding)

Bentley, the Yorkie from Wales!

A wonderful Christmas present from 2004

We moved to the UK in June 2004 when a position suddenly became available to me in Wales. Since it takes a minimum of six months to get an American pet passport, we couldn't bear the thought of our two family pets, a Boston Terrier and an American Bulldog, being put in quarantine for six months in Britain. Our married daughter adopted the Boston and we found a very loving family to adopt the Bulldog.

Our UK rental agreement didn't permit pets, but after getting to know the landlord for a few months he secretly agreed to let me get my wife a small little Yorkie for Christmas 2004. She had been saying for months, "I wish we could just have a little Yorkie!"

So after shopping a few days before Christmas, she walked into the house and noticed that one of our stockings was laying on the coffee table with a wriggling little ball of excitement inside. She nearly dropped the packages and couldn't believe her eyes! It's not often I get away with such a surprise, but it was a classic moment.

Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Yorkie DIY Grooming Nightmare

Frenetic Yorkie & inexperience with scissors can be dangerous

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to save £23 and give my little 2-year-old Yorkie his first haircut of Spring 2007. It was my first attempt in grooming a Yorkie, but I practiced some freelance barbering in the military and more recently with my wiggly grandson.

Things actually started out quite well. Since Bentley had nearly four inches of growth, I intended to give him a really close puppy cut, similar to what you might see on a Poodle or Schnauzer. For what it's worth, I would not recommend using the widely-available DIY hair clippers for human use. The teeth could not handle the fine Yorkie hair on my little guy, whose hair is soft and fine like sheep's wool.

Once the bulk of Bentley's hair was trimmed away, I discovered an area of matting along his side about halfway between his front shoulder and hind legs. Well, he was getting a little nervous and starting moving around and . . . I got a little too close with the scissors. Carefully trying to cut the matted hair away, I nicked Bentley's skin and left a small wound that obviously needed stitches. Thankfully, he didn't seem to be suffering and there was no blood; instead, just a neat little opening in the epidermis.

Well, a couple of hours and £28 later, we emerged from the veterinary clinic with two shiny staples in Bentley's side and my tail between my legs. I felt terrible, upset my wife, and vowed that I would be more careful next time. Yes, there will be a next time, but I'm investing in the proper equipment for the job: a pair of dog clippers and a grooming stand.

A lot of people groom their own Yorkies, so I know it can be done safely and satisfactorily. But a word to the wise, don't get too close on your first attempt. It's much easier to trim a little at a time until you get more confident and your little ball of fur gets used to your grooming routine.

These little dudes are just simply adorable! I remember watching Lady & The Tramp and there's a Yorky in there, isn't it? Anyway, next day, to my surprise, my brother bought his own Yorkshire Terrier and he just loved him very much! He's a lover of dog, by the way. He owns a female German shepherd and guess what, he even has his own Yorkshire Terrier Checks to show his love for that cute mutt of his! I've heard he's going for the German Shepherd checks next time! I'm sure he'll love reading this great lens of yours, Areopagus! I just did!

Breeders & Breeding Standards

Where to go and what to look for

The breeding standards describe what the "perfect Yorkie" should look like. And it is much safer to buy a puppy from a true Yorkshire Terrier breeder, although a bit more expensive, than to buy one from some unknown person who just happens to have a litter of pups for sale.
