Fever: A Slinky Standard
In the ensuing fifty-plus years, the songs has fired the imaginations of the singers of all kinds of music. There are few other songs that have been covered by everyone from The Cramps to Michael Buble, from George Clinton to Sarah Vaughan. The interpretations vary wildly, but the fuel for the fire remains the same.

The Original Lyrics for Fever
As Performed by Little Willie John

Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a feeling that's so hard to bear
Chorus:
You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
And fever all through the night
Listen to me baby
Hear every word I say
No one can love you the way I do
'Cause they don't know how to love you my way
Chorus
Bless my soul I love you
Take this heart away
Take these arms I'll never use
And just believe in what my lips have to say
Chorus
Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
My eyes light up when you call my name
'Cause I know your gonna treat me right
Chorus

What Kind of Fever Are We Getting?
The Lyrics for the Peggy Lee Version
The version that Peggy Lee and Elvis recorded was changed to include the Romeo and Juliet and Pocahontas and John Smith references.Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that's so hard to bear
You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the mornin'
Fever all through the night
Sun lights up the day time
Moon lights up the night
I light up when you call my name
And you know I'm gonna treat you right
You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the mornin'
Fever all through the night
Everybody's got the fever
That is somethin' you all know
Fever isn't such a new thing
Fever started long ago
Romeo loved Juliet
Juliet she felt the same
When he put his arms around her
He said, "Julie baby your my flame
Thou giveth fever
When we kisseth
Fever with thy flaming youth
Fever, I'm a fire
Fever yeah I burn for sooth"
Captain Smith and Pocahontas
Had a very mad affair
When her daddy tried to kill him
She said Daddy, "Oh don't you dare

He gives me fever
With his kisses
Fever when he holds me tight
Fever, I'm his Missus
Daddy won't you treat him right?"
Now you've listened to my story
Here's the point that I have made
Chicks were born to give you fever
Be it Fahrenheit or centigrade
They give you fever
When you kiss them
Fever if you live you learn
Fever 'til you sizzle
But what a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn

While I love the sultry, slinky Peggy Lee and Ann Margaret covers, while The Cramps and Nina Hagen really offer interesting takes on the song, Little Willie John really sells his Fever, in my opinion. I love the great, 50s sound to the song and I like the original lyrics better than the somewhat-cute changes made for Ms. Lee. Really, wouldn't you rather hear Elvis talk about his lips than Romeo?
