Many people think that the Labrador Retriever is a Canadian dog that comes from Labrador and Newfoundland, but is actually believed to be from Europe, England and Norway. The Labrador or sometimes just the Lab adapted very well to their environment. It was this early breed that the Newfoundland came from (this was the larger of the two dog breeds that developed).

It was the smaller short-haired breed that has become the beloved Labrador Retriever that we know and love today. It was found that this shorter-haired breed were excellent to use for small game hunting (usually birds) and fishing (retrieving fishing nets). Like most water dogs they have a double coat and have webbed paws. This makes them excellent swimmers. And they just absolutely love the water. The Labrador Retriever come in three colors - black, yellow and chocolate.

Labradors make excellent assistant dogs and police use them for search and rescue. Typically, Labradors are an athletic dog and love to swim, play catch and play retrieve games. They are good with young children, elderly, and for protection. They make a great family pet as they can have a life span of about 10-12 years, if they are kept healthy.

Labradors do require a lot of exercise and should taken out daily for a brisk walk. If you ride a bicycle you could have him tied to your bike and he could run beside you. If you are a runner, well that would be perfect, wouldn't it, he could just run with you. Other great things you could do that you would both enjoy would be agility, flyball, dock diving and even you can do the search and rescue thing. This involves training for both of you but WOW is it fun.

Labs are like most working dogs - they are happiest if they have job to do. Like most dogs they love to please their human and what better way than to teach him to do things for you. You could train him to get your slippers, newspaper or just about anything as long as it's something to do your Lab will be happy camper.

Labs are not a small dog. They are the cutest things when they are puppies. All chubby, fuzzy and all feet, but they can get large and weigh as much as 60-80 pounds or more when they get older. They are slow to mature, so at about 25 inches for the male and 24 for the female at about 2 years of age they still think they are small puppies, while most dogs mature at 2. The Lab does not fully mature both physically and mentally until they are about 3-4 years of age.

The Labrador Retriever is a true companion dog in every sense of the word. This is not a dog to leave alone. You have to think if you are ready for a dog, especially one like the Labrador Retriever. Ask yourself these questions.

1. Are you ready for a dog?
2. Do you have time for a dog?
3. Does where you live allow for dogs?
4. Do you have other pets in your household and will they co-exist with each other?
5. And this one is important - Can you afford to have a dog?

These are just a few things to consider when you want to get a Labrador Retriever or any kind of pet. Dogs are one of the best friends you can have. You can tell them anything and they'll love you forever. But this can only happen if you can open yourself to the responsibilities of caring for your Labrador Retriever.

Animal Lovers Are Never Lonely

Early childhood is an impressionable period of life in which children are often dog lovers. Parents have a great contribution in the building of their children's character by encouraging them to be animal lovers and allowing them to have a dog as a pet. Parents should encourage their young to become animal lovers because this will mean never to be alone. They will always have a friend and to be comforted when they are sad. They will be happy and feel needed, to learn responsibility and, last but not least, to love. That's what an animal friend teaches a child: the most valuable lesson of all.

Seeing dog lovers in parks, on television, in stores and on the streets, one can realize the benefit of having a pet as company. Having a dog or cat around the house will surely bring animal lovers a lot of smiles. Cuddling, big round eyes sending messages of love, cute fluffy ears or tail moving in signs of joy should make any heart melt. Animal lovers are the ones that feel for these helpless beings.

A pet is not an object one buys to keep around the house, but a living thing that communicates and interacts with the persons around it. Animal lovers know that and they appreciate every smile a pet brings on their faces.

Dog lovers know that pets depend and need them more than a human ever will. The animals around the house have to be fed and watered and cleaned constantly, just like a child. They need their masters just like a child needs his mother to survive.

Having a pet means having a lot of responsibility and dog lovers sacrifice their time, money and effort to keep their beloved company around them. Animal lovers assume the responsibility towards their pets with pleasure and never regret their efforts, because they do it out of love. In exchange, animal lovers receive even more. Animal lovers are never lonely, are always loved by their pets, they never get disappointed and often receive the comfort that a human could not give them. Not to mention animal lovers won't ever feel nagged by their pets, neglected or left aside. Having an animal for a friend is having a true friend for life.

Another reason to why animal lovers are never lonely is the fact that their sacrifices talk a lot about the kind of persons they are: communicative, generous, not selfish, always around to help their friends in need, loving and attentive. There are many people who would want these qualities in their friends or their lovers, so animal lovers are very appreciated and loved by everyone. Single persons that are dog lovers can easily find company not only in their animal friends, but in their human friends also. Not to mention that dog lovers usually find dog lovers also as their friends, because their passion for the same pets will give them a lot of things in common to talk about. A shared passion (of any kind) will always bring two persons together.

Imagine a dog lover going out to walk the dog every day. Who is he most likely going to have as a friend? Will it be his female neighbor that can't stand dog lovers? Or will it be the girl that walks her own dog in the park every morning just like him? Animal lovers, because they love life and its smallest proofs (animals) will never be alone and they will always share their pleasure with those that appreciate the same thing as them.

So if you are looking for company, animal and human, don't forget animal lovers and their pets! They will bring you the soul medicine everyone needs: love.

A Look at Custom Dog Tags

Have you been shopping and shopping for just the right dog tag, without finding what you're looking for to suit your dog's personality? Choose your exact specifications, give them to the manufacturer, and they'll produce a dog tag to your liking. Some retailers even specialize in custom dog tags.

Do you like the look and solid feel of stainless steel, brass, or aluminum? Or perhaps you are not picky, and just need a plastic tag. Plastic won't last quite as long, but they are inexpensive and easily replaceable. A metal or plastic dog tag shouldn't cost more than $40 in most cases, and in many cases they cost under $10. You can have all of your dog's ID information imprinted in the surface of any metal or plastic dog tag.

Some dog tags are jeweled. You can sometimes choose an exact pattern that you wish the design to be in. If you want the shape of a cursive "R" for Rex, and you want it done in rhinestone, you can find someone to do that. Some retailers will offer a more limited array of options, but you can still usually choose from two or three types of embedded stones.

When it comes to really high-end dog tags, such as sapphire, real silver, gold, or diamond, there tend to be more choices. This is because you will be paying many hundreds, or even thousands of dollars for the material itself, so it's worth it for the retailer to give you as many options as you like.

You also must choose the material and style of the dog tag's collar or necklace. There are leather, nylon, rubber, and so on, on the lower financial end; and silk or silver chains on the higher end. Choose a collar or necklace that compliments whatever dog tag you go with. Just make sure your dog is comfortable with it.

Choosing The Right Pet Insurance

Dog In CarPets have become a part of our families, services that used to be for humans alone are already available for our dear animal companions. Pet insurance is one of them. Some pet owners find it imperative to get pet insurance that would ensure that medical needs of their pets will be provided. It is meant to make our pets happy and well-cared for.

Pet insurances would normally cover hospitalization, surgeries, accidents and other medical procedures. They could even cover medical treatments for cancer. There are different kinds of insurance plans. How would you know what would be suitable for your needs and your pet? Here are some things that you will need to consider when choosing the right pet insurance policy.

* Just like insurances for people, pet insurance would also have a limit of the benefits that they could give. There are different annual limits, but it would range from $5,000 to $15,000. This would depend on what kind of plans and premium rates you will be getting. You would need to consider the possible needs of your pet in the future.

* If you would like to get a bargain, then there are pet insurances that would offer discounts if you are going to insure multiple pets at once.

* It would be important to understand the extent of cancer coverage that the insurance provides. There are some kind of treatments not covered by insurance policies, it would important to check the policies to understand what kind of treatments are covered.

* There are also some insurance that would only cover accidents and illnesses. Other insurance plans would include preventive care coverage like vaccinations, flea and other medication. Be sure to read the fine print well.

* Just like with insurance for people, there are also deductibles with pet insurance. Different plans would have different deductibles. Make sure to fully understand the deductibles and the benefit limit.

* A question that most pet owners would like to know is about the veterinarian. Prior to getting an insurance, pet owners would already have an existing veterinarian. Some would prefer to stay and have their pets treated by them. If you like your veterinarian, then choose a flexible pet insurance that would enable you to stay with him. There are some plans that allow pets to be treated by veterinarians affiliated with them.

* When choosing a pet insurance, make sure that they would be giving you and your pet the best kind of service. You can check about customer ratings or third party organizations that rate pet insurance.

* You could also ask for the track record of the pet insurance company. Look for a pet insurance that has more experience.

If you are unsure with the pet insurance plan to pick, compare the plans that you think would best suit your preference and needs. Compare their coverage, deductibles, amount of coverage after the deductible, maximum yearly and incident benefit.

The best way to get sufficient information is to contact the pet insurance companies. You could also check their websites for additional information. They would be able to answer questions that would help you come up with a decision. You can talk to your veterinarian for their recommendations. You could also talk to you friends and families about any recommendations.

Teaching Your Dog To Jump

Your dog may be a long way yet from retrieving, but why not brighten the training routine by teaching the JUMPING exercise?

Place the Solid, the Bar, and the Broad Jumps in different parts of the training area. Keep the Hurdle and Bar Jumps LOW, and the Broad Jump NARROW. The jumps can be raised or widened after your dog has become an expert at leaping obstacles, but to simplify the training and make proper corrections, it is important that the jumping be ridiculously easy the first few times.

With your dog on leash, hold the leash in BOTH hands, as when teaching the heeling exercises. Approach the Bar and the Hurdle Jumps slowly, and STEP OVER with your dog. Keep the leash sufficiently taut so the dog can't dart off to one side. If she balks at the hurdle, pull her gently over, WITH PRAISE! If she ducks under the bar, give a light cuff (pat or light tap) on her nose to make her draw back, then encourage her to go over the top. When approaching the Broad Jump, speed up a little, and leap over WITH the dog.

The JUMPING command may be "Jump!" "Over!" or "Hup!" and should be given BEFORE the leash is used to pull the dog across. Avoid a lifting motion. Use a forward thrust that will not throw the dog off balance, and give praise while the dog is jumping. After she lands, command "Heel!" and jerk backward on the leash, PAT YOUR SIDE, and encourage the dog to walk at heel position.

The important thing to keep in mind when teaching the JUMPING exercise is NEVER let your dog refuse a jump once you have given her the jumping command. Make her go over, even if you have to lower the jump almost to the floor, or tip the individual boards of the BROAD Jump on their sides. Refusing a jump, thus getting her way, will encourage her to balk whenever she feels like it.

When your dog is familiar with the different types of hurdles, and will leap them on command, it will no longer be necessary to step over with the dog. Walk past the hurdles instead, and meet her on the other side. While the dog is jumping, hold your LEFT arm away from your body so the leash extends STRAIGHT UP FROM THE CENTER OF THE HURDLE. While the dog is landing, drop your left arm, so as not to throw her off balance when she lands. After she jumps, slow down or come to a standstill, and command "Heel!" Snap backward on the leash, pat your side, and give praise.

When your dog will jump and stay at heel without corrections, try the JUMPING exercise without leash. Approach each hurdle in a fast walk, POINT TO IT WITH YOUR LEFT HAND, and give the jumping command. Pass by the hurdle quickly, slow down, command "Heel!" and signal backward and pat your side. Don't run when teaching JUMPING. Running gets a dog excited and causes confusion. As a result, you may inadvertently make a bad correction that could affect your dog's jumping career.

Whether schooling a dog for Obedience competition or for fun and exercise, the accepted height of a jump is one and one-half times the height your dog measures at the withers (this is from the top of the shoulder to the floor). The Broad Jump is twice as wide as the height of the High Jump. For instance, if your dog measures 16 inches at the shoulder, she should jump 24 inches in height and 48 inches in length. For certain heavy-set breeds, these measurements are even less, so don't expect your dog to jump exaggerated distances. In her efforts to please, she could have a bad fall, or she may learn to climb the hurdle instead of clearing it, which, in Trials, counts as a penalty.

As your dog progresses in the JUMPING exercise, set the three jumps in a row, approximately fifteen feet apart. This is a fun-exercise that is enjoyed by both dogs and owners. Place the Broad Jump on one side of the Solid Hurdle and the Bar Jump on the other. With your dog on leash, leave her on a sit-stay in front of a NARROW Broad Jump. Face her on the opposite side. Tell her "Jump!" then snap the leash toward you with praise. Tell her to sit, then pat her.

Lead her to the LOW Solid Hurdle. Tell her "Stay!" and face her from the opposite side. Stress the JUMPING command when you call her. After she jumps, make her sit, pat her, then move on to the Bar. The Bar Jump, too, must be absurdly LOW.

Rescue Canine-1-1:

Boston Terrier Dog Rescue

The following article provides some questions most people are assumed ask about the organization and its endeavors. Answers are provided after each question.

Just what is Boston Terrier Rescue?

This is an association devoted to housing abandoned or unwanted Boston terriers. They set emergency rescues and conducts appropriate adoption of these terriers to their permanent homes.

However, the network does not house Boston terriers that are already in poor health, aggressive, old, and/or are disease-carriers since they will not be even suitable for adoption afterwards. The least the BTR will do is to advise the owners of such terriers on better options.

Why are these dogs being rescued?

Most dogs that are rescued by the network were simply unwanted. Most owners would admit that they were unable to provide their pets with the attention, time, and level of activity that are appropriate for this lovely little dog to thrive and be healthy. There were cases when life situations or jobs made it hard for the owners to keep their pets with them. They considered the abandonment of the terriers as the easy or even sole option.

Can the adopted dog be used for breeding?

The association will definitely disapprove of the idea!

In fact, they firmly advise every new owner to have the dog strictly as pets. As part of the placement process, Bostons are being spayed or neutered to avoid reproduction. Moreover, most of the rescued terriers are not excellent strains of the breed standard. More often, they do not have a record of ancestry or pedigree that can be consulted before the breeding process.

May I adopt a female terrier?

Most Boston terriers that are being abandoned are males aging between two and six since most owners think that the female variety is more affectionate. Surprisingly, the male variety is a responsive and sweet companion given proper attention and care. However, since all rescued Bostons are spared as breeders, the gender of the dog should not matter at all during the adoption. Appropriate placement shall be executed by BTR.

Is there a charge if an owner surrenders a Boston?

There are owners who volunteer themselves of paying their dogs' medical requirements, which also include spaying or neutering. Likewise, donations assist in the expenditures that cover the dogs' preparations for placement in a new home and with a new owner.

If I adopt a dog, will I be charged for it?

Apparently, owning a dog requires the owner to be financially capable for health care expenditures and even for the registry of Bostons.

How does the adoption process happen?

The procedure can be summarized as follows:

1. Screening:
a. BT Rescue filters potential owners by filling out extensive application papers for adoption.
b. Possible owners' financial capability and lifestyle are being researched by the network.
c. Application forms are screened between 7 and 10 days.

2. Approval/Disapproval:
* Once the application is approved, a dog that is available at the time shall be presented to its new owner.
* Otherwise, the application shall be placed on a waiting list. If circumstances make the application possible, the new owner is notified later on.

What must be done to help?

The answer depends on the clientele.

1. For Breeders:
* Breeders are advised not to sell their Boston Terrier to anyone if the new home will be inappropriate. Instead, have good homes reserved for them and plan litters.
* Also, if breeders do not have a competent and proper breeding program, reproduction should be avoided.

2. For everyone else:
* Be informed about the special nature and various mental and physical requirements of Boston Terrier. Then educate others about these things.

It should be made clear to everyone that Bostons do not fit the lifestyle of just anyone and everyone. If possible, look for breeds that may warrant a new shelter.

Moreover, donations are greatly appreciated for they usually assist in the placement process of the dogs. BTR runs entirely on the dedication of volunteers.

Agility Training

Four to Eight Dog Agility Jumps Makes Ideal Training

We are often asked, "How many jumps should I start with?" You can never have too many single jumps to practice agility. A good starting place is four jumps. This is the absolute minimum number of jumps that we recommend.

You can teach a variety of skills, drills, and exercises with four jumps. Four jumps will allow you to work on a short jump chute or jump grid. You can setup a "box" with your jumps and practice handling, collection, and 270 degree jumps. You can teach your dog jumping left and right. You can be outside the box and send your dog or you can handle from the inside of the box. Your jumps can be setup in a horizontal line, so that you can practice serpentines and threadles.

Go the next step and get eight jumps. Now you can setup two boxes with one introductory jump. You've now multiplied your drills that you can practice with your dog. Your jump grids can be of recommended size and quantity of jumps. You can also setup your jumps in a circle with the jump bars perpendicular to the circle or on the circumference of the circle. This pattern also enables you to train a variety of skills.

Your next consideration is a double jump and a triple jump. You could set two or three single jumps together to make your expanded jump, but having double and triple jump in your course work is really valuable to practice. We've seen many dogs run a clean course and the last obstacle is a triple and the dog is not prepared for it, and bang, down comes the bar.

You can really be ahead of the pack and have two sets of eight jumps. This is the ultimate in training because you can keep a jump grip up at all times that is separate from your course work, and have eight single jumps to have for course work. And when you include your double and triple, you can really practice all the jumping skills and drills necessary to get you those "Qs".

Getting To Know The Golden Retriever

Buying A Golden Puppy

We all know that Golden Retrievers are beautiful, obedient, and make great family pets and hunting dogs. Golden's also make great guide dogs for the blind, narcotic detection dogs, and even tracking dogs for finding missing people. Although there are many other dog breeds out there, Golden Retrievers remain one of the most versatile and most astonishing breeds that you can get.

Before you rush out and buy a Golden Retriever puppy, you should first take the time to learn a bit more about the breed. You can attend dog shows, meet with various owners of Golden Retrievers, and even go to your local kennel club. Most people who own Golden Retrievers are extremely proud of them and will be more than happy to share their enthusiasm with you.

When you buy you're Golden Retriever puppy, it's always a great idea to buy from a backyard breeder or local puppy mill. Backyard breeders are normally the best way to get a Golden puppy, as they know and care a lot about the breed in general. Although you can always go to a reputable breeder, backyard breeders aren't just in it for the money - they actually care about their dogs and want you to get the best Golden possible.

You can also visit the Golden Retriever Club of America and their local member clubs, as they can supply you with a list of breeders in your area. If these breeders don't have any Golden's for sale themselves, they will be more than willing to help you find what you're looking for. This way, you can get a Golden from a very reliable source.

Whatever you do, you should never rush into buying a Golden Retriever. You should always take your time, and have a little bit of patience. When you buy your puppy, you want a healthy puppy who will grow up to be a fine testament of the breed. By taking your time and making a careful decision, you can save yourself a lot of time and money later on down the road.

Golden puppies that are poor quality, are normally produced by breeders who just want to have a litter or breeders who are just looking for the profits and care very little about giving thoughts to looks, quality, or temperament. If you buy a puppy from either of these breeders, you'll more than likely end up with a puppy who has poor health, poor temperaments, and even disqualifications in breed.

When you get your puppy, you should always think long term. Only buy from a quality breeder, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Always remember that you aren't just buying a Golden Retriever puppy - you are buying a companion and a friend for life.

Just A Little Info On The Terrier Breed...

Some Facts about the Boston "Bull" Terrier Dog

The Boston terrier is a well-muscled and compact breed. This is not really surprising since the Boston terrier was first bred by people who wanted to use them in dog fights. Now some people may read all sorts of implications from such a violent past. Some people might think that the Boston terrier dog would make a bad pet because of its aggressive nature. However, you should know that as a pet, the Boston terrier can actually be pretty mild mannered.

The temperament of the Boston terrier can be described as enthusiastic as it often loves to play. Most people comment that the Boston terrier actually has a great sense of humor. Another characteristic that people find delightful with this breed is the fact that they are intelligent and are very much easily trained. This fact is also enhanced by the dog's natural curiosity and love for learning.

Of course, people who own pets know the importance of training. Having a well-behaved pet increases the enjoyment for you both. Having a well-behaved pet means that you can have more fun with that pet.

One thing that owners have noticed with a Boston terrier is the fact that it can be very sensitive to the tone of a person's voice. This may be described as a sort of emotion detector. Because of this sensitivity to the tone, a Boston terrier will be able to respond to how you are feeling when you are talking. This means, however, that you need to take care when training your dog. You need to make sure that anger and frustration do not find their way into your voice.

They also make excellent watchdogs as they do not bark indiscriminately. This means that you won't wake up in the middle of the night because your Boston terrier saw a butterfly. There are some cases, though, when a Boston terrier will not bark at all.

Regarding the living conditions, Boston terriers can do well enough without a yard as long as they get regular exercise. This means that they are suitable for apartment living. However, you should also know that they are very sensitive to the extremes of weather. This means that you should keep it in a place that's neither too hot nor too cold.

Unlike other terrier breeds, the Boston terrier is an average shedder. This means that you should be wary of keeping it indoors as it can shed fur over your floor. We all know how much of a fiasco that can be.

Bostons have a variety of common health problems. They easily get overheated when they are pushed too hard. As said before, they can also be sensitive to extreme weather and any weather that's too hot or too cold can leave them with breathing difficulties. Skin tumors and heart tumors are very common with this breed. So you need to bring the dog to a vet regularly.

Another disorder you should watch out for is a skull defect. If a Boston terrier is badly bred, it often develops a bone defect that prevents the brain from growing. This, naturally, will lead to a retarded dog.

Major Concerns with a Border Terrier

If you want to have a small but sturdy pet dog, then the Border terrier might be for you. This pet is no delicate lapdog. The Border terrier pet dog is full of fun for the whole family.

Before getting a Border terrier pet dog, however, you might want to consider some of the major concerns regarding the breed. This will help you weigh the pros against the cons and will let you reach a decision that would be best for you. Here are some concerns regarding Border terrier pet dogs:

1) Temperament - when people talk about terriers, they all comment on the same behavior using different words. Some people say that their dogs are feisty. Some say that their dogs are stubborn. Some people would prefer to use the word impulsive. The point is, they all describe the same behavior. A terrier is inherently dynamic in its behavior. It is part of what makes a terrier, a terrier.

The temperament of the Border terrier pet dog may be quite surprising, if not outright shocking for most people because of its size. For such a small dog, a Border terrier pet dog sure packs a lot of energy.

2) Aggression - Border terrier pet dogs are not really as aggressive as other breeds. However, its instincts as a terrier would still urge it to run after anything smaller than it. This means that if you own a cat or even a pet rabbit, you cannot have a Border terrier pet dog. This also means that you cannot trust a Border terrier pet dog out of its leash. If it even sees something running, it will take off, leaving you yelling uselessly. This, of course, can cause accidents to happen. In order to make sure that your Border terrier pet dog does not get hit by a car, you need to keep that pet on a leash outside.

3) Escape - it is recommended by many experts that Border terrier pet dogs should be kept in a fenced-in yard to let it have some roaming space while making sure that it is safe. However, you should know that Border terrier pet dogs are clever escape artists. Even if a Border terrier pet dog is within a closed in fence, you should try to keep an eye on it.

4) The noise - Border terrier pet dogs will bark at practically anything that catches their attention. Because of this, you need to properly train them to bark only when needed. You should also be quick to stop them if they are barking inappropriately.

For this reason, you should not really get a Border terrier pet dog if you live with very close neighbors and if you work during the day. An unsupervised Border terrier pet dog is sure to keep barking all day long. This, of course, may draw complaints from your neighbors.

5) Independent thinking - what people love about Border terrier pet dogs is the fact that they can learn very quickly. This is because of their inherent curiosity and toughness. However, the same qualities that make them prize-winners can also make them very stubborn when they want to. You have to be consistent with your commands and show the Border terrier pet dog that you mean what you say. In doing so, you will be training the Border terrier pet dog properly.

Border Terrier
The Scruffy Little Hunter Dog

The Border terrier got its name from the area called Cheviot Hills, which is actually near the border of England and Scotland. This is where these dogs were made to attack and terminate predatory foxes.

They have wiry coat that is why they normally appear as scruffy. However, this scruffiness is an attention-grabber that is why owners do not forget to hug their little ball of energy.

The following are some of the basic facts breeders would really love to know about Borders:

Category: Terrier

Living Environment: indoors (highly recommended); outdoors (fenced yard)

Coat: wiry and short; double coated

Colors: tan, red, grizzle and tan, and/or blue and tan

Height: between 11 and 16 inches

Weight: between 11 and 16 pounds

Temperament:

Naturally,

* they are scruffy, hard and bold hunters
* they are active as puppies but mellow down as they mature
* they are not friendly with rabbits, rats, hamsters, and even birds
* they are economical to feed
* their activity die down when left alone all day as they really love to please people especially their owners

When properly trained,

* they can get along with the household cats but not with cats in the neighborhood
* they may even catch a burglar
* they may lose timidity when accustomed to active environments

Breeders should note of the following health issues:

* Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome or CES, also called as "Spike's disease", which is a hereditary, neurological, metabolic and muscle disorder that is sometimes confused with canine epilepsy
* Cataract, or loss of transparency of one or both lenses of the eyes
* Cryptorchidism, wherein testicles do not descend into the scrotum
* Deafness
* Skin problems and a few skin allergies

Care and Exercise:

* Their coat needs weekly brushing.
* They should be professionally groomed at least twice a year.
* They should bathe only when necessary since they shed little to no hair. Their physique requires a regular exercise routine which includes a daily play time while on leash.
* They should be on leash while walking in public places because of their hunting instincts.

Origin/History:

The exact origins of Border terriers are obscure but many breeders accepted the story that the variety was developed in the Cheviot Hills area, which is near the border of Scotland and England. The Borders have been used as hunters of rabbits and hares. They can even keep up with running horses with their short yet sturdy legs. They were also used by farmers to lure predatory foxes into their dens before killing them.

They were also trained to hunt otters, marten, and even fierce badgers. Like most terriers that were once molded as hunters, they also evolved as pets and became lovely, friendly, and loyal companion dogs. They also take part in dog shows and they can easily grab their audience attention with their agility, appearance, and bright disposition.

The breed was registered by the British Kennel Club in 1920 and by the American Club ten years after.

At present, Borders are highly favored as companion dogs and pets due to their adaptability, friendliness, and winning personality. Nonetheless, they can be reliable when it comes to tracking down vermin. In fact, some of their esteemed talents include hunting, guarding the family, and performing tricks and sports that require competitive obedience.

Like most terriers, you can be rest assured to have a loyal and bright companion dogs if you give your attention and affection to a Border. You can be sure that they can definitely drive away your bore!

Obedience Training...

Three Principles on Dog Obedience Training

Dogs, even when their breeding is maximized and well-adapted to human needs, would always need some basic obedience training for they would never figure this out on their own. Obedience training requires the use of some principles which differentiate effective training from training without results. They are the following:

Principle One: CONSISTENCY

The first rule in obedience training is to be consistent. This covers the use of words, tone, and the actions that accompany the word or command. During the beginning of the training, the trainer or the dog owner must decide what should be the parameters of training- what you are trying to teach the dog and how to do it.

A word or a phrase, let's say "come", does not make sense to a dog. He does not understand things the way human understands it and he does not understand the language we use. So to make the training understandable, you should use the command in a very consistent manner such that the dog will learn to associate the word with the meaning you attach with it.

For example, if you are using the command "come", make sue that everyone in the household use it in a singular manner. The command "Come" specifically means that the dog should approach the giver of the command use it in that sense. So if you are using this command make it a point that you would not do actions that would make the command confusing for the dog.

If he does not come to you, do not force the dog to come to you and punish him for doing so. This would make him attribute the command with the punishment. What could you expect next?- he would not follow the same command since this leads to punishment.

Consistency also covers the use of the same command by all people. For example, if you are using the command "come", other people in the household should not replace it with words like "here" or "come here boy".

Principle Two: KEEP IT SHORT

The hours devoted to training and the words used as command should be kept short. Keep in mind that the attention span of dogs is very short that making them engrossed with a specific activity would be very hard, if not impossible. Puppies would only react to a specific stimulus at a very long time, for example chasing a moving toy car, and then they would lose interest and move on to the next thing.

They simply don't posses the same amount of interest they had when they are staring the activity, they become easily bored. The same thing happens in training therefore, it should be limited only to 10 minutes to 15 minutes of regular training.

Principle Three: DO NOT USE FORCE and PUNISHMENT

Never hurt the dog if you want him to be trained. Also, never force the dog to follow the command if he is not prepared for it or punish a dog for something he did.

Don't push the animal too hard while training. The dog does not understand that he should learn things "instantly" and he does not realize that you are becoming impatient with the speed he is picking up the training. All he knows is that you are mad.

So do not use force as this does not communicate your meaning properly, instead use negative reinforcement. If he knows that he is praised when he does something right, he should not be praised when he does not follow a command.

Dog Health Insurance...

Health Insurance for Your Pet Dog

The word insurance is one of those words that just make you cringe. Next to putting gas in your car it seems like the biggest expense you have and there is just so much that you need.

You need to keep insurance on your car (it would have been really nice if somebody would have told how big a financial drain that was going to be), if you own a home you pay homeowners insurance, if you rent an apartment you have renters insurance, you struggle with the ever soaring cost of health care insurance, and if you are a really responsible family member you have life insurance. And now you find you are hearing that you should consider purchasing a health insurance plan for your pet dog.

You love your dog, he's more than a pet, he's a valued member of your family and probably your best friend. But health insurance? You can barely afford to put food on your table how are you supposed to be able to afford to insure your pet. Besides he's just a mutt, dog health care insurance is for fancy purebred show dogs, not your rescue pet.

The shoestring you're probably living on is the very reason you might want to consider putting pet health insurance on your pet. The average dog owner takes their pet dog to the veterinarian approximately 2.3 times a year and it will cost you approximately two hundred and eleven dollars per year. My guess is that each time you pay the vet bill your budget is screaming for mercy.

What happens if your dog contracts a disease, or gets hurt? It doesn't take much to rack up some pretty serious vet bills. What if you have to leave town and can't take your dog with you? Can you really afford to leave your dog at a boarding kennel? You already know how much you have to pay for your prescriptions, do you really think that a dog prescription is going to be any cheaper.

Your dog is your best friend and a treasured member of your family could you really live with yourself if you had to put him to sleep just because you couldn't afford his vet bill.

It is possible to get health care insurance for your dog for approximately ten dollars a month. While it might not cover all of your dogs vet care needs it could help. If you shop around and read each plan carefully you should even be able to find a pet healthcare plan that will help pay for your routine vet visits. Some pet insurance plans will even cover some boarding expenses.

Some questions you should ask the pet health insurance company you are considering buying a pet health care policy from is whether or not your vet accepts that particular type of insurance, if there is a cap on treatments, how much is your deductible, and how will they handle any pre-existing conditions your dog might have.
