Crocs created this innovative, fashionable footwear line by utilizing the expertise of its recently acquired Italian design firm, EXO Italia.

DALLAS - Crocs Inc., the maker of brightly hued plastic clogs, made a bold bid to expand its appeal Tuesday by unveiling a new line of women's fashion footwear.

The introduction of the You by Crocs line of nine boots and shoes marks a departure for Crocs, which has logged meteoric sales growth from the popularity of its odd-looking, perforated shoes. The shoes -- a hybrid of a sandal and a clog -- are made of a plastic resin that wearers find both comfortable and light weight.

Among the most radical shifts for the You by Crocs line is the new arrivals' retail price: $149 to $299 a pair. That's far above the $30 price on Crocs's standard shoes. The new line includes eight wedge-heeled models and one lifted flat, each of which features a combination of leather, suede and lambs wool. Crocs's plastic resin occupies only the soles of the new models. The You by Crocs line will be available from retailer and online this fall.

The venture into the volatile fashion arena illustrates Crocs's push to broaden its product portfolio and avoid a letdown if its original shoe formats eventually fade in popularity. On the strength of those early models, Crocs, Niwot, Colo., has rocketed from $1.2 million in revenue in 2003 to $354.7 million last year and a projected $670 million to $680 million this year. The company's net last year was $64.4 million.

"Anything that takes them in the direction of a broader product offering and lessens their dependence on their classic styles is a good thing for the company," said Mitch Kummetz, a senior analyst with Robert W. Baird & Co. in Denver, regarding the new fashion line.

Some on Wall Street doubt Crocs can escape a letdown as a one-hit wonder. Nearly 8.9 million of the company's shares -- 22.2% of its total -- were sold short as of May 15, according to the Nasdaq National Stock Market. Yet that figure is down from the 13.6 million Crocs shares sold short six months earlier.

Crocs's stock has risen 262% in the past 12 months to close today at $85.05, up $2.88.
