from Comedy Movie to Broadway Musical

Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder created a comedy spoof of the story of Frankenstein, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, in 1974.  Now, on the heels of his success with a Broadway production of THE PRODUCERS, Brooks has adapted his film into a stage musical.  The show previewed in Seattle in the summer of 2007 and debuted on Broadway in the fall, one of only eight shows exempted from the pre-holiday Broadway theater crew strike.

The musical suffered in the economic downturn of 2008 and closed on January 4, 2009.

About YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, The Movie Version

Young doctor Frederick Frankenstein ("that's Fronken-steen!") has gone into medicine and anatomy, but he's adamant that he is a man of science and conscience and distances himself from his grandfather's infamy.

He travels to Transylvania after inheriting the family estate. There he discovers his grandfather's old notes and soon he's captivated by the idea of recreating the experiment to bring the dead back to life.

This movie spoofs Mary Shelly's Frankenstein along with classic horror films in general. It was shot in black-and-white and used many of the actual props leftover from the 1931 movie production of Frankenstein. The cast is a comedy gold who's-who. Gene Wilder (who cowrote the screenplay with Brooks) is Frederick Frankenstein. Teri Garr is the ditzy lab assistant. Chloris Leachman is Frau Blucher (neeiigghhh!), the housekeeper and Marty Feldman is the irrepressible Igor ("that's Eye-gore!") Peter Boyle played the part of the Creature.

The Movie, Soundtracks and More!

If you've never seen the movie before, I heartily recommend it! It is one of Brooks' most popular films and Gene Wilder is clearly at the top of his comedic game. The film has made many top comedic film lists and in 2003, it was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress Film Registry for it's quality and significance.

Here you can get the DVD, the movie soundtrack with dialog bits, a novelization by Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks and the original Broadway cast recording of the new musical version!

Young Frankenstein (1974) - review by Tim Dirks
Young Frankenstein (1974) is one of writer-producer- director Mel Brooks' best films - a nostalgic, hilarious spoof-tribute to classic horror films (with its authentic black and white cinematography and production design/set decoration), and in particular, of Mary Shelley's classic novel. This was his follow-up film to his westerns spoof (Blazing Saddles (1974)). Later, co-writer and actor Wilder attempted his own Old Dark House genre spoof, Haunted Honeymoon (1986).

Far & away my favorite Mel Brooks movie. He sometimes gets heavy-handed, but it's not a problem here. Great lens, too!

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I heard that Cloris Leachman wanted to play her role in the play, but Gene Wilder thought she wouldn't be able to keep up at her age. But that was before Dancing With the Stars and while she wasn't a very good dancer, she sure did keep up with that grueling routine! 5*
