Young and Fresh as a Lily
10 Secrets to Young and Fresh Skin
Looking younger than your age is quite easy. Just follow these tips...
1. DRINK WATER. Our body is 70% water and we lose about 2 1/2 liters of water daily. That amount is equivalent to about 10 glasses of water, so we need to drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day (12 to 16 glasses).Do you know that tap water and bottled water are tested and found to be too acidic for our body? Too much acid in the body may cause a lot of skin problems: skin rashes, early wrinkles, acne, and psoriasis. Let's hydrate our body with water that is rich with alkaline and minerals. Alkaline water neutralizes acids, flushes out toxins, and acts as conductor to cell activities. To better hydrate our body, we should drink alkaline water that have an ideal pH of 9.5.
2. BALANCED DIET - A good eating habit always results to a healthy body, and also beautiful skin. A low-fat and low-sugar diet slows down aging. High-fiber food controls the insulin surge in our blood. Every time our blood sugar level rises fast, our body automatically produces cortisol (a stress hormone), which steals the suppleness from our skin and gives premature wrinkles.
3. AVOID PROCESSED FOODS. It is now public knowledge that processed foods have high levels of chemical additives which are poisonous to our body. We should eat more fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants to help reduce stress, delay aging, and increase immunity of our body. Some of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants are blueberries, tomatoes, carrots, and broccoli. Oranges and grapefruits are good sources of vitamin C. Magnesium, a mineral that fights stress, is often found in whole-grain products (oatmeal, popcorn, brown rice, whole-wheat flour, sprouted grains, whole-grain pasta, and whole-wheat bread), beets, and raisins. Bananas and avocados are loaded with potassium, a mineral known to preserve smoothness of skin. Yogurt also helps lower blood pressure.
Formulated vitamin and mineral supplements assure regular intake of required daily dose of vitamins C, E, A, K, and B complex that our body needs to stay active and young.
4. EXERCISE. Choose any kind of exercise that helps lower stress levels and is beneficial to general health: a vigorous aerobics class that makes you sweat profusely, or a quiet yoga that clears your mind, or just a casual walk in the early mornings and evenings. Even a simple breathing exercise will do a world of good for your skin because you get relaxed and at ease with yourself.
5. ENRICH THE MIND. Reading good books keeps the mind alert and dynamic. Watching movies or plays and engaging in conversation with people also maintain brain agility. A busy mind never gets bored. With the absence of boredom, discontentment and unhappiness will have no place to set in. And wrinkles will be absent, too.
6. NO ALCOHOL. Consumption of liquor and other alcoholic beverages dry up the skin and puff up the eye bags. Liquor is also known as spirits and liqueurs. Beverages are wine, beer, and sake. Fortified wines are created when spirits were added to wines, such as: port and sherry.
7. NO SMOKING. Smoking has long been known to have harmful effects on the body, especially on the skin. The bitter taste of smoke inhibits our taste buds and inhibits our appetite; thus, destroying the chance of a good and balanced diet.
8. FIGHT STRESS. Stress is caused by both negative and positive events in life: a sudden unemployed stage or a happy birthday party. Some of the symptoms of stress are: headache, sleep disorder, and depression. Stress can be managed through: exercise, relaxation and a healthy diet rich in magnesium. Enough sleep is as important as activity and food. Here are some ways of getting to sleep fast:
1. avoid food (or snack) and caffeine intake before bedtime (coffee, tea, or chocolate),
2. no more physical exertion when sleeping time is near, and
3. take a warm shower and listen to slow music with eyes closed.
Here's how to relax: spread your full length on the bed and think of nothing. Imagine you're just floating in space.
And here's how to worry: set aside five whole minutes on worrying about all personal problems and another five minutes on thinking about solutions to each problem. Then shut them out of sight (like putting them inside a closed cabinet located inside your mind) and spend the remaining 23 hours and 50 minutes of a day enjoying life to the hilt.
9. LOVE YOUR SELF. Pamper yourself with a body massage, a facial spa, or a pedicure. Appreciate what you have: a good job, a nice home, or a garden full of flowers. Add some spice to your life. Once in a while, do anything that would make you feel good and wonderful.
10. PROTECT YOUR SKIN. Protection also means taking proper care. Understand your skin type: whether you're oily or dry. If you have oily skin, you need cleansing more often; while dry skin needs frequent moisturizing. Both skin types requires sunscreen to shield skin from harmful effects of sunlight.Use formulated skin care products to cleanse and to moisturize but do not over-buy. Expensive beauty products do not guarantee good complexion. Limit yourself to a maximum of 4 products for your face because too much chemicals will just ruin your skin.
If you want to use home-spun creams to save money, be extra careful. Always avoid putting anything on your eyes. Even if these beauty recipes came from reliable sources, always apply the concoction to your hand first and wait for an hour. Discard if there's any adverse reaction; like itching, reddening or inflammation.
The best cleanser for our skin is water: inside and out. Drink lots of water. Wash your face with a mild soap and water to remove make-up and dirt from our skin. Once a week, do not put any night cream on to let skin breathe freely.

- TO DEEP CLEANSE SKIN. Oatmeal facial mask and scrub. Dissolve 5 tablespoon of instant oatmeal with 4 tablespoon of fresh milk, or as needed. Product should be a sticky paste. Apply mixture on recently washed face and leave for 15 to 30 minutes. 15 minutes for dry skin type, and 30 minutes for oily type. Gently scrub off the oatmeal mask with lukewarm water. Dab towel on face to remove wetness. Apply moisturizer. NEVER squeeze your pores to remove blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. Go to a reputable dermatologist for proper skin treatment.
- TO MOISTURIZE SKIN. Fresh avocado cream. Mash 3 ripe avocado slices with 5 drops of almond oil. Product should be smooth and paste-like. Spread on skin around the eye area and leave for 5 to 10 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.
