To many of us, our pets are a part of the family. As they age they get the same illnesses and pains that we get and we do our best to make their last years as comfortable as possible.

Some of our family and friends think that we're crazy for going to the extremes that we do for a cat or a dog, but then they don't realize how much that cat or dog means to us.

Your Aging Pet is here to try to help you take care of your pet in his/her old age. Why? Because our pet means everything to us and we're willing to do all we can to take care of him and make his last years enjoyable. We can not, and will not "put him to sleep" just because others do not feel the same about him as we do.

Please take a few minutes and visit Dene's Place, our t-shirt and button shop. We offer a lot of original designs that you can't find anywhere else.

New York, World Trade Center, 9-11! I Remember! None of us will ever forget 9-11 and with all due respect to those who died and to those who had loved ones who died, I offer this design. Just click on the picture to see all of our shirts, buttons and gifts with this design.

Human-Animal Bonding

Animal love or animal friendship is the feeling of affection people have towards animals. For most people, love for an animal is a part of the affection they have for their pet, an emotion of bonding or companionship which can border on affection, fondness, or love. For others it takes on deeper or even compulsive forms, surrounding themselves with often stray animals out of compassion and becoming somewhat isolated from society.

The love for animals stems from many causes. For many people, bonding to a pet or animal is a natural and valued process - children often do this very deeply, as do many adults who consider themselves animal lovers. For some people, strong ethical stances are also a part of their love for animals - for example, in connection with or related to conservationism, environmentalism, and/or veganism/vegetarianism. One can love animals out of a general respect for nature and the environment, or become a vegetarian or conservationist out of one's love for animals.

Grief over the loss of a pet is often trivialised, and people who have not experienced it themselves may add to the problem by making insensitive remarks such as "It was just a cat" or "You can always get another".

The loss of a pet or a non-human animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one.

Seizures! Try PetAlive EaseSure.

Help control seizures in your cat or dog!

What is PetAlive EaseSure?

PetAlive EaseSure is a 100% natural blend of herbal and homeopathic ingredients specially selected to support the animal brain and nervous system. It may be used to support routine brain function and systemic harmony.

When should I consult my pet's veterinarian?

It is important to seek medical care for your pet if he/she has more than one seizure per month, has changed behavior in between the seizures (Excluding the "Post-ictal" period directly after the seizure) or becomes generally lethargic, has difficulty in walking or refuses food.

It is not recommended that you discontinue your pet's prescription medication without consulting your veterinarian. Also consult your veterinarian first when deciding to use EaseSure simultaneously with prescription medication so that your pet's progress may be adequately monitored.

DIRECTIONS

For ongoing long-term support: Mix drops in a favorite treat two to three times daily.

For fast support: Half the recommended dose may be mixed into a little water and squirted or spooned directly into the back of the mouth when needed (repeat after 5 minutes for up to two doses if necessary).

Cats and small dogs: 2 - 3 drops.

Seizures

My sister had Rat Terriers that were prone to having seizures. In her case the seizures affected the males and not the females and the cause has never been determined. The veterinarian has them on medication to try to control the seizures, but they still tend to become more frequent and severe as the dogs age.

Seizures can be caused from many things.
1. Congenital defects
2. Blood glucose levels that are too high or too low
3. Low oxygen levels in the blood that could be caused by anemia, heart problems, or difficulties with breathing
4. Kidney disorders
5. Liver disorders
6. Infections such as canine distemper
7. Tumors
8. Toxins, like antifreeze, lead, or chocolate
9. Fevers and hyperthermia
10.Brain damage resulting from trauma or poor blood flow to the brain
11.Certain medications
12.Low calcium in females that are nursing young
13.Primary or idiopathic epilepsy

To help your veterinarian in diagnosing what is causing the seizures you should note as much information as possible. How your pet was acting before the seizure? Was he excited about something? Was he sleeping? Playing? How long did the seizure last and how frequent are they?

In Memory Of Brewster

Brewster was an important part of our family for thirteen years. He is the Boston Terrier pictured in the introduction.

Brewster died last week, 8/9/07, and we miss him very much. I hope the pain passes shortly, but I know we'll think of him often.

He was an exceptional dog! As a pup he was probably the easiest pet to housebreak that I have ever known. Brewster didn't have a mean bone in his body, and you would swear that he knew what you were talking about ninty percent of the time.

You couldn't have asked for a closer friend and companion.

I miss him terribly!

Pet Insurance! Do You Need It?

What is Pet Insurance? Pet Insurance is very similar to human health insurance which offers a range of programs tailored to suit the needs of domestic pets. While pet insurance remains a relatively underdeveloped product in North America, with less than 1% of all pets being insured, European levels of insured pets range from 12% to 50%.
QuickCare Pet Insurance: QuickCare offers accident and illness coverage for your dog or cat and financial protection for you! Your pet is a part of your family, prepare for the unexpected. At QuickCare, we're committed to eliminating the financial stress associated with your dog's or cat's healthcare needs through a selection of affordable easy to understand pet insurance programs.
Why do I need Pet Insurance? Advances in the field of animal medicine have been exponential in past decades allowing veterinarians to successfully treat conditions that were previously considered untreatable. However with these advances comes an escalating cost of veterinary care. It is estimated that North American pet guardians now spend over $10 billion a year on healthcare for their pets.
Consider these facts: One in three pets will need emergency veterinary treatment every year.
Two out of every three pets experience a significant health problem during their lifetime.

Tumors

Tumors seem to be pretty common in dogs and cats. Some of them can be relatively harmless but others can be cancerous. It is important to have your vet take a look at the tumor. Your vet will advise you as to removing the tumors or leaving them alone.

About 20% of tumors in dogs are mast cell tumors which can be a very serious form of cancer in a dog. These tumors are rare in cats and humans.

Many years ago we had a nine year old minature Dachshund who developed tumors. Our vet informed us that they were cancerous and needed to be removed. Wanting the best for Dutchess, we had him remove the tumors. Within a few months she developed new tumors and they seemed to spread everywhere. They were to numerous to be removed so we ended up having her on pain medication until her death.

Now we have a twelve year old Boston Terrier who has developed these tumors that appear to be the same. Brewster does not appear to have any pain with these tumors yet. He has had these tumors for about two years now, and although the vet would remove them, we are hesitant.

With the experience that we had with Dutchess, we would not want to see Brewster go through the same thing and right now these tumors do not seem to bother him. Do we leave them alone and let nature take it's course or do we have them removed and take the chance that they will spread and lead to pain for him?

If your pet has tumors, this is a decision that you will need to make. Do not be afraid to question your vet to get all of the facts before you proceed. Then "you" decide what is best for your pet.

Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

Euthanasia: Having A Pet "Put To Sleep"

Animal euthanasia (Greek, "good death") is the act of inducing humane death in an animal. Euthanasia methods are designed to cause minimal pain and distress. In pet animals, this process is commonly referred to by the euphemisms "put to sleep" or "put down".

Reasons for euthanasia:
Terminal illness - e.g. cancer
Behavioral problems - e.g. aggression
Stray and feral animal overpopulation - not enough adoptive homes
Illness or broken limbs that would cause suffering for the animal to live with, or when the owner has insufficient financial reserves to pay for (or a moral objection to) treatment.
Small animal euthanasia is typically performed in a veterinary clinic or hospital, or in an animal shelter, and is usually carried out by a veterinarian, or a veterinary technician working under the vet's supervision. Often animal shelter workers are trained to do euthanasia as well. Some veterinarians will perform the euthanasia at the pet owner's home - this is virtually mandatory in the case of large animal euthanasia.

While the thought of "putting your pet to sleep" is heartbreaking and to many of us a definite "no", there comes a time when we must decide if we're saying no for the sake of the pet or because we can not stand the idea of being without him/her.

I did not believe in euthanasia until our miniture Dachshund became deathly ill with cancer back in 84. She was nine years old and had developed tumors that we could tell were painful.

The vet removed the tumors but they kept returning and getting more numerous. We kept putting off "putting her to sleep" because we did not believe in it.

Dutchess got to the point that we had to carry her outside to go to the bathroom. She lay around moaning because the pain medication was doing little good if any at all. It would break your heart the way she looked at us as if asking why we weren't helping her.

We finally decided that she should not have to suffer like this and had the vet put her to sleep. I stood there petting her and soothing her as the vet gave her a shot. It was as if she just dozed off into a deep sleep.

To have your pet put to sleep is a decision that only you can make. I would not condone it unless my pet were suffering a great deal, and even then it will be extremely heartbreaking but watching your pet suffer is not a good thing either.

About this lens

If you've made it to the bottom of this page I feel complimented because it means that something on this lens has peaked your interest, and that's why I made it. So now I'll tell you a little about myself.

As I said in my profile, I enjoy collecting and since I retired I've found that building these lenses is a great way to stay busy; And, I hope that I'm helping some of you out by gathering information on your favorite subject and putting it all in one place so you don't have to spend hours searching for it.

I spend part of my time designing t-shirts and buttons to help supplement my social security because, as many of you know, it's pretty difficult to make it on social security. My on-line t-shirt shop is called Dene's Place after my wife.

My "retirement" came a few years earlier than I would have liked because they found that I have an inoperatable tumor about the size of a softball in my right pelvic area. They still don't know what to do about it because for now it has quit growing. One of those "leave it alone and see what happens" type things.

Anyway, if you've made it this far, I'd appreciate it if you would check out Dene's Place to see if there's anything that you might like for yourself or as a gift. It helps me pay the bills!

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to check out my other lenses when you have time.
