Nashville Voters Had Social Security Numbers Stolen

Not going to be a Happy New Year for thousands.

Registered voters in Nashville, TN or Davidson County may get more than the big credit card bills in January they accumulated from Christmas shopping. They could get bills from credit card accounts they didn't even open.

Thieves broke into the Elections Commission building over the holidays and stole computers containing personal information on all registered voters including their social security numbers.

Officials are planning on sending out notices to everyone soon. By the time the notices are mailed, it will probably be too late. Identity thieves don't usually sit around giving each other high-fives. They get to work quickly to sell that information immediately.

At $5 a pop on the black market and approximately 350,000 identities, they could easily get almost $2,000,000. They can resell the info up to 30 times. I guess they're having a happy new year at the expense of all those poor folks in Tennessee.

Getting some identity theft protection in place should be first priority if you are affected. Place a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit or compare identity theft protection plans.

No matter how extremely careful you are about protecting your personal information, you can still be a victim. Protect yourself - do it now.

LifeLock Identity Theft Protection Review

Find out all about LifeLock Identity Theft Protection

You may have seen the LifeLock commercials on tv or heard about it on the radio. It's the company with the CEO who publishes his social security number on the side of a van and drives it around New York City. He totally believes in his company and puts his money where his mouth is.

LifeLock offers straightforward identity theft protection that's inexpensive and effective. I've used it and know many people who have it. The relief you get from knowing your identity is safe is immeasurable.

LifeLock will stop all those pre-approved credit offers that seem to flood our mailboxes. Before LifeLock, I used to get one or two a day and sometimes more. It was a real pain to always have to open and shred them. Any good thief would know I was at work all day and my mailbox was an easy target to steal one of these offers before I even got a chance to shred it.

LifeLock will also put a fraud alert on your credit file for you and keep it renewed every 90 days. Having a fraud alert is much more convenient than a credit freeze. I can still open a new account or get a loan. But it protects me because any request for new credit will requires a phone call to me at a number I specify. No one else is going to even get a chance to commit fraud with my info.

LifeLock also orders my 3 credit reports for me. I get them in the mail a few weeks after my protection starts. That gives me a baseline to know what my credit profile looks like. Every year, I get new ones automatically. I really like it that I don't have to remember to do this myself, I have enough to do as it is.

If my identity should get stolen while having LifeLock's coverage, they'll give me tons of personalized help and advice to get straightened out. They won't quit on me until the job is done.

Along with that help, I'll get a million dollar guarantee. That will cover any loss I may experience.

I can't praise LifeLock strongly enough for their services and coverage. I've got peace of mind knowing I'm protected. When I read about the latest security breaches, I just brush it off knowing I'm safe.

Paul Harvey is now endorsing LifeLock. I've listened to him for years. He only endorses the best products. His good reputation is at stake.

I found this promotion code '9'. If you use it when you enroll, you'll get their special rate of $9 a month or $99 a year. And I got my first 30 days for free. I kinda like the number 9 - it saved me some money. LifeLock.com

Keep Your Identity Safe With Strong Passwords

Are you using your dog's name for a password?

Passwords are a pain. I wish we could just use our fingerprints or an eye scan like you see in the movies or TV. Until that technology comes, we're stuck with creating and remembering passwords.

I know someone who uses their dog's name for EVERYTHING. She just figures she'll never forget it. I refer to it as her 'super-secret password'. No matter what I say, she won't change it.

If you love your dog that much but would rather have a password that's a bit harder to guess, try making a sentence like "Rover is the best dog in the world". Then you can use the first letter of each word as your password - Ritbditw. Stick his birthday in there somewhere and presto - you've got yourself a good password. Use a mixture of random letters, upper and lower case, and numbers to create the best ones.

Now don't go using the exact same password for every login. You still have to change things up a bit.

Very important:
Make your email passwords different from any banking or financial passwords. That way if someone hacks your email address, your other logins are safe. Also, use a unique one for social network sites like MySpace or Facebook.

Never, ever give out your passwords. If for some wild and crazy reason you do, change them as soon as you get back to your computer.

Speaking of changing... it's a good idea to change your passwords a couple of times a year. Sorta like getting a new toothbrush twice a year. You do that, don't you?

Here's another good password: IlRmttmho926. That's "I love Rover more today than my husband on 9/26".

Identity Theft - Another Security Breach

Monster.com was hacked - 1.3 million job seekers were affected

Identity thieves keep working hard on every angle to get your personal information. There's no slow-down in sight for the creative ways they can find to steal large numbers of identities.

Monster.com was hacked on August 17, 2007. The hackers made off with confidential information of 1.3 million users who had posted their resumes.

The object of this attack was to get enough information about a job seeker to be able to send an email or make a phone call and sound like a legit job offer that came through monster. Then thieves would proceed to ask for even more confidential financial info like bank account numbers. They also requested the job seekers to click on links in phishing emails that could infect their PC's with malware like keystroke loggers.

Monster.com posted a notice on its website warning users they might be the target of email scams.

Identity thieves have no soul. They are ruthless and will stop at nothing to exploit as many people as they can.

Identity theft protection is something we all need to be aware of and start using. The next major security breach just may affect you.

Identity Theft Victim

What to Do if You Think Your Identity has Been Stolen

Now that it's too late to talk about identity theft prevention, here are some things you can do if you think or know for sure that you're an identity theft victim.

If it's a simple case of someone opening a account in your name, start here.

The first thing to do is call all the creditor with the account you believe is fraudulent and tell them it wasn't you who opened that account. Document your call with the phone number, extension, date, time and who you spoke to. Write notes about your conversation.

Make sure to understand the process of how this creditor handles fraud claims. Make sure you understand what is expected from you. Ask what you can expect from them. Again, write all this down during the conversation.

Next, protect yourself with a 90-day security alert with the three credit reporting agencies - Equifax, Transunion and Experian. A 90-day security alert gives you time to verify if you are a victim of fraud. If you determine you are a fraud victim, you may add a 7-year victim statement to your credit report.

After the investigation on the fraudulent account is finished, ask the creditor for a document that states you are not responsible for the debt.

You're still not done.

Follow up to make sure the creditor of the fraudulent account and the credit reporting agencies have all the information they need to clear your name. It is always a good idea to place a follow up call or send a letter for confirmation.

Now you need to keep a sharp eye on your credit reports from the three reporting agencies. Review them every month to be sure everything is cleared up. If a new fraudulent account is discovered, you know how to handle it.

If your credit report is back to normal, you can feel confident that all issues were resolved as you expected.

Don't throw away any files, letters or notes about this. Keep them all in a safe place in case you need them in the future.

And now you know what to do if you're an identity theft victim. At this point you may want to consider identity theft protection so you won't have to go through this again.

Identity Fraud Hurts

Identity fraud in some cases also involves identity theft, a crime in which an imposter takes on the identity of a real person (living or deceased) for some illegal purpose. Some people prefer the term "identity fraud" to describe when their means of identification has been exploited for an unlawful purpose. No matter what you call it, identity fraud is the stealing of personal information and then using it illegally.

Identity fraud, in particular, where identities are stolen or fictitious identities are created, is becoming an increasing problem due to emerging (and rapidly evolving) technologies which enable such crimes to be committed. Thieves from all around the world are very clever at hacking into sites or 'phishing' for information. But an even easier way for someone to commit id fraud is to go through trash looking for credit card offers or even mortgage offers. If you own a house, you know what I'm talking about - every week somebody is going to give you a better interest rate if you refinance with them.

Report the theft of your credit cards or numbers. Report the incident to the police, especially if it involves stolen identification documents and ask for a crime reference number or other documentation so that you can keep a record of the incident.

Also report driver's license/ID Card Number misuse. If you discover that you have become a victim of driver's license or ID card fraud, immediately contact your local DMV to report it.

Identity theft protection is always easier than having to fix it later.
