How To Automate Your Finances

Putting Your Finances on Autopilot

Putting your personal finances in order is one of the easiest things to do, provided you automate as much of the mundane tasks as possible. Here's how:

1. If you don't have a rewards credit card, get one. Now, set up as many of your recurring bills as possible to be auto-debited to this card.

2. For those recurring bills that you cannot do Step 1 for, set up your online checking account to automatically pay those bills. What, you don't have an online account with FREE bill pay? Get one.

3. Now that you've put your bills on autopilot, it's time to do the same with your savings and investments. Set up an automatic transfer from your online checking account to an online savings account.

4. Repeat step 3 for your investments. The idea here is to set up a transfer from your online checking account to your brokerage account(s) and following that up with automatic investments in the mutual funds of your choice. This is not to be confused with investing in individual stocks, which requires more thought, insight, and analysis than automating your finances can handle.

5. Sit back, relax, and don't worry about writing checks or forgetting about paying your bills.

My Personal Finance Lenses

These are other lenses I author, focused on various aspects of personal finance like Kids & Money, credit, saving money, and other topics. Money Hacks is my original PF lens.
Money Hacks
Tips, tricks, and hacks for earning, spending, saving, preserving, investing, and multiplying your money.
Your Money Is Your Life
This is the lens you're viewing right now! It's a lens where I formally show you how to earn, spend, save, preserve, invest, and multiply your money.
Saving Some Green by Going Green
This lens is focused on saving money on utilities and other expenses that have a beneficial impact on the environment. This lens has not been published yet (very early stages of planning).
Kids & Money lens
This lens is focused on personal finance specific to children: How to establish good personal finance habits from the age range where it will do most good. This lens is in the works.
Credit Hacks
The focus of this lens is on the credit aspect of personal finance. I show you how to establish credit, how to use it wisely, how to stay out of credit troubles, and how to make the most of rewards cars. This lens is in the development stage.

My Favorite Web Sites

This is a list of my favorite web sites.
Your Money Is Your Life
This is the companion web site to this lens. Here, I tell you about my trials and tribulations about writing my series of eBooks called Your Money Is Your Life.
Money Hacks
This is my original personal finance web site, where I give you tips, tricks, and hacks for earning, spending, saving, preserving, investing, and multiplying your money. I also address current events as they pertain to personal finance and economics.
Andrew Tobias
I've followed Andy, and his advice, for nearly 20 years. The author of The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, Tobias is a well-renowned personal finance guru who has been featured in New York magazine, Time, Esquire, and Parade, among others.
Greg Mankiw's Blog
Mankiw is a Harvard economics professor and former Bush adviser.
7 Million in 7 Years
The author of this site, Adrian J Cartwood, made a small fortune starting and running his own businesses. He has a wealth of information on his site and his views are often contrary to conventional wisdom. Very refreshing.
Punny Money
This is one of the funniest blogs I've ever seen. This site's author, "Nick" (if that's his real name), draws humorous cartoons to illustrate and accompany his posts. They're always funny, but even more impressively, they're always right on the money.
Freakonomics
This is the web site that expands on the book of the same title. I suggest that you read the book and then visit the site on a daily basis. The perspectives taken here are quite useful and sometimes (almost always) run counter to the establishment.
Econbrowser
Written by two university professors, this site dives a little deeper into economic theory and delivers valuable content for understanding what is going on in the world. It's a must-read for any student of economics or anyone interested in why the economy is the way it is.
Warren Buffett
This is Berkshire Hathaway's web site where all of Warren Buffett's famous Letters to Shareholders are contained. If you want to really understand investing, whether in your own business or through stock ownership, here is where you'll find the rationale and thought behind the world's greatest investor.

Hey, he's a little kooky. But he's fun. Once you get past his picks (which aren't very good, by the way), he's a very smart guy. Listen, watch, and learn.

Money is important, even to those who claim its not. One of the most important and often the most painful lessons for a young adult to learn is how to handle thier money.
    Great lens.

    About billspaced

My name is Bill and I have several lenses on Squidoo. My Catch All lens is here.

My interests drive the types of lenses I create. None of these are "get rich quick" schemes. Instead, they're about topics in which I have true interests, like politics (Rants 'n Reviews and John McCain Is A Kook), computers (Computer Monkeys, photography (Photo-dodo), and personal finance (Money Hacks, Your Money Is Your Life, Kids & Money, Credit Hacks, and Saving Some Green).

Surely, there will be more to come. If there's ever anything I can help with, or if you would like to suggest something to me, feel free to comment in one of my Guestbooks; I'll check back regularly, and if I can accommodate something, I certainly will.
