Getting a Patent for your New Product from the Canadian Patent Office

Getting a patent for your new and exciting product through the Canadian Patent Office is an exciting endeavor. This process is extremely important as it will protect your product from being stolen and used by someone else. Never forego the process of patenting. It is very important. The finances required and the time needed to obtain your patient is a necessary cost that must be faced in order to get the future payoff on your invention.

When you submit your invention to the patient office you will be expected to follow the Canadian Patent Office's procedures and regulations. You must be 100% honest on all paper work completed and pay all fees. Here are the basic steps that you can expect to take as you proceed with getting a patient on your new invention.

Step One:
Determine if you will be hiring a patent lawyer or whether you will be obtaining the patent without the assistance of a lawyer. It is highly recommended that you hire a patent lawyer who will assist you in walking through the Canadian Patent obtaining process.
This process can be quite tedious and a lawyers experience and knowledge can make the process so much easier. It is recommended that you consult with a patent lawyer before applying on your own. The wisdom, foresight and knowledge given to you by the patent lawyer will help you to decide if you need to pay the extra expense and hire the lawyer.

Step Two:
The second step to securing a patent for your invention is filing for a patent right, this step will begin the process of validating the originality of your invention. Before you even take this needful step it is recommended but not required that you personally do a preliminary online search at the Canadian Patent Database. This search will give you descriptions and images of issued Canadian patents. You can search through the use of a key word, the inventor's name, the owner or applicant. Doing this preliminary check before you file can save you undo expenses if you find that there is already a patented product similar to the item that you are patenting.

After finding that there is no other invention quite like yours you are ready to go full stream ahead. Securing a patent for your invention will give you the legal right to collect royalties on the technology behind your unique invention for a certain number of years. The first person to apply has the right to the patent so do not hesitate get this needed paperwork completed as quickly and efficiently as possible with the Canadian Patent Office.
