Youtube Advertising

Video is the new darling of internet marketing, and Youtube is the premier video sharing site. Put them together and you get the Youtube advertising and marketing powerhouse. But to make the most of it, you have to know how.

See my other lens on Camtasia Video Screen Capture Software for more information on easily creating videos for your Youtube marketing campaigns.

Setting up Your Youtube Marketing Presence

Start off on the right foot

Create Your Account
Dead easy - go to www.youtube.com and follow the prompts to create an account.

Tweak Your Profile
You'll want to set at least a few items in your Profile. A picture is always a good idea as it makes you more easily recognizable to people who want to follow you. You can also add a short bio and a website URL so that people who view your profile can visit your site. This is a "nofollow" link but still worth having.

Update Your Channel
You may have noticed when editing your profile that it shows up as part of your "public channel" screen. Your channel is automatically created when you set up your account, and you can only have one per account. Most people never realize that they can change from the default "youtuber", but there are several other types which may be more useful to you:

Director
Musician
Comedian
Guru
Reporter
Non-Profit (only in the US and UK)

All of these allow you to add more information of various types in your profiles such as performer information, show dates, or extra websites. Check out the different types and see which would be most appropriate for you. If you think several would be appropriate, you might want to create several Youtube accounts and make each one a different channel type.

Add friends to your account
You can add people to your contacts list using a button on their profile page, and you can also import contacts from your Google address book. You can then easily send videos or messages to these people from within Youtube.

Once you've uploaded and favorited a few videos:

Create Playlists
You can add your own and others' videos to playlists which can be made available to other people. These can be niche-targeted playlists which encourage viewers to visit your pages and watch your videos.

Viral Video

If you want your video to go viral, it has to have something in it that people want to share. What will it be?

Making and Publishing Marketing Videos

Choosing video subjects
If you want to get lots of views of your video in order to market or advertise something, it has to be worth watching and worth passing on. Worthiness can be due to a number of different factors, including being fun, shocking, amazing, funny, weird, substantial, serious, or important. Choose what makes sense for your purposes.

Uploading videos
There is a time-length and size limit on the videos you can upload, but within that, upload the highest-quality you can. Youtube will compress it but will also make available a higher-quality version for those with fast connections. This makes a huge difference with screen capture videos.

Tagging and categorizing
When you go to upload a video you'll be asked for a category and tags. Pick carefully as these will help people find your video and the more targeted you can be, the better. Tags are space separated so if you want a multi-word tag you have to take out the spaces so it's all one word.

Embedding videos from youtube on your own website
It's easy to embed a Youtube video - yours or someone else's - on your own website. Just go to the main page for the specific video, where you go to watch it, and look over to the right in the box which shows you the user who uploaded it. If this video is allowed to be embedded, you'll see a field labeled "Embed". Just copy the code from that field and paste it into the desired location in your web page.

Marketing with the Youtube Community

Communicate, don%u2019t spam

Leave comments on other videos
Most videos allow you to leave text or video responses. Find videos where you can leave useful, relevant responses and do so. Ideally, look for new videos from a popular video maker, so your responses will be early in the thread and seen by lots of viewers. Make them worth viewing and people will visit your profile and videos.

Hold a session in a Stream
A stream is a chat room where users can share videos as well as text chat. You can limit the number of users and focus the stream on a particular niche topic.

  • Reply to comments on your own videos

  • Join and create groups in your niche

  • Turn on Active Sharing

  • Share with friends (on or off Youtube) using share button under video player

  • Stumble and tag your video on non-youtube social media
