Transatlantic and Repositioning Cruises
The number one advantage for travelers is that the cost is much less than a typical cruise. However, since travelers are responsible for air fare to and from the ports of call, the costs could go up considerably. Plane tickets to two separate locations usually cost more than a standard round-trip ticket fare.
Repositioning cruises are often longer than normal cruises, lasting an average of nine to eighteen days. This is great for cruisers seeking longer, relaxed vacations. The drawback is that not everyone can afford to take off so much time from work and school.
Repositioning cruises tend to make fewer stops at ports of call, since their main purpose is to relocate the ship to a new destination. This is good if you would like to spend a lot of time at sea, but if your goal is to experience new places, it's unlikely that you'll be satisfied on a repositioning cruise.
To sum it up, repositioning cruises typically feature more sea days over long stretches of water and can offer an excellent bargain for travelers. Spring season is the most popular time for repositioning cruises, as ships that have wintered in the Caribbean, South America, and Asia start moving back towards Europe.
