Benefits of Eating Fruit
I'm sure you've heard a lot about how great fruit is for your health. It has a lot of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and none of the bad stuff like cholesterol. It makes an excellent & healthy addition to any diet and can even help prevent various diseases. Eating a lot of fruit will make you feel better. Plus, it is very tasty and can replace those sugary snacks just fine!
Top Five Reasons to Eat Fruit
- Fruit is a natural food. It is created by nature itself for us and animals to eat (plants spread their seeds this way!).
- Fruit helps your brain. It stimulates your memory and helps you recall information easier and faster. If you eat fruit before doing hard mental work, you will notice that it becomes easier because your body doesn't have to work on digesting the food as much.
- Eating fruit is ethical. You don't have to slaughter them before eating - they are just waiting for you to be picked.
- Fruit is very nutritious. It has a lot of water, fibre, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and the good kind of sugars (fructose).
- Fruit can help you with your health problems. It can be used in weight loss diets and for detoxifying. Acid fruit is especially effective here.

The Five a Day Initiative
Eating 5 portions of fruit a day can improve your health!
Various health authorities around the world recommend that you eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day - and it doesn't matter whether they're fresh or processed (tinned, frozen, cooked, juiced or dried). Of course, there's no problem if you eat more - the recommended amount is between 5 and 9 portions. The 5 A Day programs are especially known in United States, United Kingdom and Australia. World Health Organization is also promoting fruit and vegetable consumption around the world.
How Much is one Portion?
The five a day initiative includes both fruit and vegetables. The portions aren't large so it should not be a problem to consume at least five of them every day. The information is based on an article by BDA (The British Dietetic Association) and might differ slightly from guidelines in other countries.
- One piece of medium-sized fruit - like an apple, peach, banana or pear.
- One slice of large fruit, such as melon, mango or pineapple.
- One handful of grapes or two handfuls of cherries or berry fruits.
- One tablespoon of dried fruit, such as figs.
- A glass (roughly 100ml) of fruit or vegetable juice.
- A small tin (roughly 200g) of fruit.
- A side salad.
- A serving (roughly 100g) of vegetables - eg, frozen or mushy peas, boiled carrots or stir-fried broccoli.
- The vegetables served in a portion of vegetable curry, stir-fry or casserole.
Fruit or Fruits?
The plural form of the word "fruit"
The plural word "fruits" is usually used in scientific or botanical context, when speaking about different species and kinds of fruit. For example: berries and nuts are both fruits. In normal everyday conversation the word "fruit" is commonly used as a noncount noun, which does not have a plural form. For example: fruit is good for you. (And that's true, too!)

- Oh, if only I could eat fresh fruit every day of my life! The first thing I'm planting when I move to the country this summer is a fruit tree, or two, or three! I go crazy for strawberries, so I have to plant those too. I wonder if avocadoes will grow in Alabama? Or bananas?

- Had to vote for bananas but it was hard to choose. I love home grown fruit but most fruit from the grocery store is not so good.

- Since I started the Jenny Craig diet, fruit has been a more important component of my daily regimen. Funny, although I really like all kinds of fruits, I just don't get enough. You know, I'd REALLY like to see some food lenses from you -- esp. Lithuanian specialties. 5*****

- I have wondered about your last item. Fruit or Fruits. I worked for at&t in so. Calif. and many coworkers who learned English in a different country said fruits. Their view was they learned the correct usage of the language. Are there natives that say "fruits"? What do the English use. OOps, I am getting way too deep into this.
Mangos had my vote.
