Zazzle Shop Pros and Cons

How Zazzle Measures Up
Jan 2, 2009, the addiction to having a Zazzle shop began. Zazzle offers a free shop to set up. Here, I will break down the pros and cons of Zazzle with some comparison to having a CafePress Basic shop. CafePress Premium Shops offer more and are very professional looking. This is a lens about free online shops. At this moment I am a member of CafePress.com and Zazzle.com.
What is Zazzle?
Zazzle is an online retailer that allows users to upload images and create their own merchandise (clothing, posters, stamps, etc), or buy merchandise. Users are allowed to open their own shop for free. Also known as "print on demand store". Every single product is shipped to customers is made - literally - one at a time, right after you click "Purchase Now".
Zazzle was founded in 1999 by Robert Beaver, and his sons Bobby and Jeff Beaver. Users can also receive a commission on products that they sell and design themselves. Zazzle is funded primarily by Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers and Sherpalo Ventures, who in 2005 provided $16 million in series of funding.

Pros of Having a Zazzle Shop
Not available on a CafePress Basic shop
* Each time a visitor clicks from your site to Zazzle.com and makes a purchase, you earn a 15% referral fee on that sale. Note: in order to do this you must be signed into your Zazzle account and get the code under the link tab, which is shown under each product.
* You can add banners to your Zazzle shop and banners outside of your shop like this one.

* Upload your own customize header to a template of several different background colors to chose from. Or you can chose from several theme templates.
* Though you don't have to know much about HTML, the more efficient you are with HTML, the more creative you can have your gallery looking.
* One shop can hold multiple product lines. No need to have several shops for different designs. Though there are some Zazzle shopkeepers that choose to have different shops. Example: I have 8 different product lines in one shop.
* You can use the same product (example: men's dark basic t-shirt) several times with a different design all in one shop.

Cons of Having a Zazzle Shop
* Zazzle, along with most online shops have a high base price. Overall it is higher than Cafepress. The base price is what Zazzle.com charges for each item. The base price is with 0% mark-up.
Products With Text Only
Some products are limited to uploading images only to CafePress. But not Zazzle, text can be added to all products.
In CafePress, in order to see text on all products, it needs to be uploaded as an image. In Zazzle, text can be added as you are creating a product. The plus of this is that it allows customization for the customer if they would like to add something else. Here are some examples from both shops.

Pros of Having a Zazzle Shop
Not available on a CafePress Basic shop
* You can set your Zazzle shop to accept comments.
* You have your own fan club.
* People can rate you products. (I have mixed feelings about rating systems. If a person is out to get you, they can mess up your rating system. It can be a popularity contest.)
* Zazzle Modules look nicer than the CafePress modules that are used on Squidoo. Though sometimes it is a little hard getting the right keyword, if you want certain products in your modules. (Note: A Zazzle module will not give you the affiliate fee if someone clicks on your link and buys your product..)
* With most non-apparel items, you can add colored background and borders to your product.
* You can chose a selection a real models to show off your apparel.
* You can add more than one image to a product.
* Add text to your designs right off of the Zazzle site.
* Set your products for anyone to customize. They can change the image, text, size, style and even the type of product to their liking. How cool is that.

- I have really come to appreciate Zazzle. My children bought from Zazzle long before I had a Zazzle store. My favorite thing about Zazzle, once you add the picture/product, it just keeps earning income for me without any additional updates, reposting, republishing, etc. Now that is awesome!

- the biggest con with zazzle for me is I fight to get my image to fit how I want it on the product. If I try to make the image larger to fit then I get the message that it will be pixeled....ggrrrrr
Don't we earn commission through squidoo if someone buys from a zazzle module in our lenses?

- Marsha, I normally make my images (though not always) 2-3x larger than the requirement and at 300dpi. I do have several images that go with the guidelines of different products. And yes, even then it doesn't always work out.
It is my understanding that Squidoo shares the commission off of CafePress modules, but not the Zazzle ones. Only if you take the code and place it in a text module will you get the referral fee.

- Good info, Sandy. I'm starting to get lit up by Zazzle. I wish their RSS feeds were easier and better, but there are so many pluses, it's hard to complain.
