How to create and sell your art online with a free Zazzle store

Zazzle is a great place to sell your artwork, designs or photography online.  You can set up an entire store for FREE and start creating your own Art Gallery right away.

My Zazzle store features kitchen and gardening designs and some of my nature photography.  As I learn about creating products and building my art gallery on Zazzle, this will be my notepad of beginner tips and tricks on how to start a store and how to make your Zazzle store better with customizing.

I hope we can both learn a lot together about making better Zazzle pages and profits!

Zazzle Basics

Baby steps, just take baby steps...

I just opened a new store on Zazzle. I am impressed with their variety of products and great printing options. Their customization feature also lets your customers put their own text on your designs in a wide selection of fonts.

But sometimes I get hung up on the simplest things. I am starting this lens to collect tips on working with Zazzle and easy ways to make your Art Gallery look better. This will be my note page as I learn how to do new things. Along the way I hope I can also help my fellow Zazzlers!

Create Your Own Custom Products and Text

You can create you own products and customize them with your own personal message. Zazzle also has an impressive selection of lettering styles.

Zazzle Glossary

A few phrases you'll need to know

Store/Gallery: Your Store on Zazzle (formerly called a Gallery) is where you sell all your great designs. Use it to display all your artwork on Zazzle products. You can have up to three Top Pics display in rotation at the top.

Product Line: A grouping of products for sale. That group can either be organized by product or design. So, you can have a Postage Product Line that only has postage in it, or you can have a Flower Product Line that has one flower design on many Zazzle products.

Three ways to organize your Zazzle Store main page

You decide what to feature on your Zazzle Store home page

To edit your homepage content go to My Zazzle.
Click on the Store tab.
Then click on Edit Content in your sidebar.

Either show your Featured Products, Recent Products or Popular Products.

You can also add a Top Picks Widget, a Comment Wall, Gallery Statistics (visitors) or a Tag Cloud of all your keywords.

If you do not have time to write custom code to organize your main store page; try picking one of each design for your Featured Products page and use that as a quick fix. You can pick up to 12 items.

My New Art Cards on Zazzle

I'm working on my Product Line of Cards

I am expanding my Product Line of blank art cards and invitations. Zazzle lets you put art on three sides of their cards (plus a small box on the back). You can also set them up to be fully customizable by your customers. Zazzle also offers lots of fun font styles!

Creating Product Lines on Zazzle

What is a product line and how to I organize it?

Product Line: A grouping of products for sale.
That group can either be organized by product or design. So, you can have a Postage Product Line that only has postage in it, or you can have a Flower Product Line that has a flower design on all Zazzle products.

How To Add a New Product Line:

From the My Zazzle Page, select Add New Product Line.

A window will pop up asking you to: Add Title and Description

The Title should appear on your sidebar in a few moments. Use good descriptions to help get picked up in search engines better.

Hot Tip: How To Add a Subcategory:

Select the existing Product line you want to add to.

When you are on that Product Line's main page, select Create New Product Line. This will create a subcategory and again you'll see a window to add Title and Description

If you are having trouble with this step make sure you don't have your Pop Up Blocker enabled!

My Mug Product Line on Zazzle

Very cool travel mugs too! And they use a large print area.

I love all the color options! Some have colors inside the mug, some have color around the rim and on the handle, some even change when you add hot liquid. And you can add your own text for gift mugs.

Zazzle offers wraparound printing on mugs and travel mugs. Lots of fun for mug designers!

Go to My Zazzle and click on the Products tab.

Name and Describe Your Product Line

You'll have lots of options

This where you enter the name and description for your new Product Line.

Here's the pop-up window you see after clicking Add New Product Line.

Tips: Use descriptive phrases to describe your design or products in this Line. Talk about the artwork and describe it as fully as you can.

New Business Card Product Line

Business cards for artists and artisans

My new line of business cards features unique original art, restored vintage artworks and fun designs.

Zazzle has three different sizes of cards, all customizable front and back.

Custom Postage Stamps

Something you can only create and sell on Zazzle!

You can only create your own custom postage on Zazzle. Add a text box for RSVP and 'Save the Date' messages.

United States Custom Postage needs to be approved by the Zazzle team before it is published on the internet. There is usually a 48 hour lag time. Your design will reman in your Pending Products area until they are approved for publication.

Here are a few of my latest designs.

Editing After Your Products Are Published in the Zazzle Marketplace

In general, after a product is published you can change the name or how it is categorized in the marketplace, but not the art design or any custom text on the product. If there is a model wearing your design, you can change that too.

What you can edit after a product is published in the marketplace:

Preview (change style) meaning the type of product it is; so you can change a note card to a greeting card or the model on a t-shirt.

The image, text, background colors or borders. You'll need to create a New Product instead.

Razzle Zazzle Tote Bags

Don't forget, you can let customers add their own name and text to these too!

Zazzle has lots of cloth canvas totes in small or large sizes with a HUGE variety of color options, sizes and prices. Printing is on one side only. They're so cute, I couldn't resist designing a few!

How To Use Your Zazzle Associate Code To Make Referral Money

Earn 15% -- even if you're not an artist and don't want a store!

Use the Zazzle Seller Incentive Program to earn %15 on referral sales -- even on products from your own store!  The more you sell the more you earn, read more on the Zazzle
Associates page

Easy Store Main Page Links:
To link to your own main store page just use the Zazzle Star by adding an asterisk (*) after your shop name:

Link Format: http://www.zazzle.com/AngelCityArt*

Quick and Easy Individual Product Links:
Zazzle really makes it easy to set up links!  There is a shortcut to linking to individual products where Zazzle automatically adds your Associate ID code for you.

While you are signed into Zazzle, click on the product you want.  Near the bottom of the page select the option Link To This.  A pop-up screen will open with three different linking options with your Associate Code already embedded for you.  All you need to do is copy and paste!  Easy peasy!

Linking to Products or Sections or Whatever:
Linking to your products or sections from your outside website is simple to set up, especially if you are already used to doing it for your CafePress shop.

To get a referral fee for linking to your products, sections or any other of Zazzle's thousands of products or top-selling brands simply add your 18 digit Associate ID code to the end of the URL with a question mark (?) and your code like this: ?rf=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Link Format:    http://www.zazzle.com/AngelCityArt?rf=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Link Troubleshooting Tip:  Be sure there isn't a backslash before the question mark in your link.

Linking Note: If there is already a question mark in your link use an ampersand (&) instead. For example this links to one section in my store and already has a question mark in the link, to add an Affiliate Code at the end of the URL use this format:  &rf=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Link Format:
http://www.zazzle.com/angelcityart/gifts?cg=196985891855185354&rf=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What if I just want to be Zazzle Affiliate?
You can also earn 15% even if you aren't an artist and don't want to open a store!  It's a great way to round out your web pages or blog with products themed to your site.  Just open an account and start linking away!  I'm calling this the World's Easiest Affiliate program!

Adding More FREE Zazzle Stores and Link 'Em Up

All Zazzle stores are FREE

You can have more than one shop on Zazzle and still pay NO FEES! They're just cool like that.

You can link them all up together too. Pick one to be your master account. On the Earnings screen you can add your other stores and their sales will count towards your Volume Bonus.

Zazzle Squidoo Lens Module Notes

Just notes on something I've noticed

I'm thrilled to have a Zazzle module on Squidoo. You can select your own store by entering that in the Store Name field.

So far I've noticed that it seems to display in order of last added, but I'll have to test that a bit further. Also, even though I've seen it load properly it sometimes shows This Module Is Empty when I am in edit mode.
