Zennor
Zennor is a village set high on the cliffs in west Cornwall.
A road leads 1 km inland from Pendour Cove to Zennor village, where the Tinner's Arms will give you refreshment, and tell you something of the village's past. St Sennen Church belonged to Tywardreath Prior in the 12th century, then one of the chief monastic houses in Cornwall. In 1270 it was given to Glasney College by its founder, Bishop Bronescombe. Now it is just the Parish Church, partly Norman but added to up until the 15th century.Zennor Folk Museum is housed in an old mill just south of the Tinner's Arms. A private collection of old mining and domestic tools, furniture and equipment, farm implements and models of a tin mine, illustrate Cornish life back to prehistoric times.
Zennor Quoit, 1km east of Zennor, is a massive Magalithic Chamber tomb.
The Nine Maidens south-west of Zennor are no relation to those close to Lamorna. Indeed here there are 11 stone pillars in the circle and a Bronze Age barrow cuts the circle on its southern side. However, the story is the same; wicked girls found dancing on a Sunday and turned to stone for shame.
D.H. Lawrence lived in Zennor from the end of December 1916 to October 1917. After his arrival he thought about establishing his long-dreamed of Utopia on the Black Rocks of the Peninsula and persuaded Katherine Mansfield and John Murry to come to Zennor from their house in Bandol. They soon saw that northern Cornwall in a war-time British April bore little resemblance to the south of France. They left and the Lawrences were eventually expelled. The locals, zenophobic and suspicious at the best of times, thought Lawrence's German wife a spy. Lawrence and she used to sing German folk songs in the evenings. Finally a careless blackout and, coincidentally, a German submarine seen cruising off Zennor Head, caused them to be banished from the county.
