Its 1978 and I'm in graduate school (Western Illinois University; Community Mental Health program). Warren Zevon releases "Excitable Boy" and Werewolves of London rises up the charts. My abnormal psych. teacher is Michael Zevon. We ask if he is related to Warren. Turns out, they are first cousins. So I followed WZ's career and loved his music.
After WZ died, I looked up Dr. Michael Zevon on Google. He's a psychologist in an oncology program in Buffalo, NY. WZ gets the big "C" and its Michael's speciality.
WZ had plenty of songs about death and dying. Premonitions, or natural consequences of living life hard. "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead"; "Life Will Kill Ya"; "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead"; "My Shit's F***ed Up".

"The album's centerpiece is the sardonic gem, "My Shit's F***ed Up", which opens with this stark prediction:
Well I went to see the doctor
I said, "I'm feeling kinda rough".
"Let me break it to you son,
Your shit's f***ed up".
I said, "My shit's f***ed up?
Well I don't see how".
He said, 'The shit that used to work,
It won't work now".
Hearing this song in the aftermath of Warren's recent medical news is more than eerie: it's downright weird." - WZ's official website

- Rolling Stone Article: Life Hasn't Killed Warren Zevon Yet
- Interview after "Life'll Kill Ya" released. Very interesting quotes about subjects of his songs. He didn't fear guns and violence, but doctors and illness were most disturbing to him.
From the President of the United States
To the lowliest rock and roll star
The doctor is in and he'll see you now
He don't care who you are
Some get the awful, awful diseases
Some get the knife, some get the gun
Some get to die in their sleep
At the age of a hundred and one
Life'll kill ya
That's what I said
Life'll kill ya
Then you'll be dead
Life'll find ya
Wherever you go
Requiescat in pace

- Last days interviews, including info about Letterman appearance:
Letterman asked Zevon if his condition had taught him anything about life and death. ''How much you're supposed to enjoy every sandwich,'' Zevon answered.
Weeks later, Letterman was still struck by the reply. ''Here's a guy looking right down the barrel of the gun,'' he said. ''And if a guy wanted to indulge himself in great hyperbole in that circumstance, who wouldn't forgive him? But that was perfect, the simplicity of that. If this guy is not a poet, who is?''
