Zinc Acne Treatment
Zinc acne treatments are effective to reduce oil from the skin. The action appears to be similar to that of tetracycline. Zinc acne treatments are also helpful to protect the body from free radicals and are necessary for the production of new white blood cells.
How to Treat Acne Using Zinc
Oral zinc for acne preparations come in the form of zinc gluconate or zinc sulfate. Zinc picolinate is also a form that combines organic salt and zinc. Food sources include seafood, poultry, nuts, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, fortified cereals, brewers yeast, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds and legumes.
Studies to support the use of zinc for acne alone are sparse. There have been some case studies that support the use of zinc for acne treatments. Never take more than 100 mg per day of zinc for acne. Don't take additional copper with zinc since it will block the zinc's action in the body.
Before taking additional zinc for acne in your diet be sure to consult your doctor. The physician may not believe that taking additional zinc will help your skin condition but unless there are medical reasons not to take zinc for acne it is a mineral supplement with little to no side effects, unless you over dose and take too many. It is cost effective and can very well help your condition. The question isn't can I but rather, "Is there a reason I shouldn't?".
