Zombie Gift Guide - top zombie games, books, movies, and other great gifts for zombie fans

Shopping for a gift for a zombie-obsessed geek? Whether your zombie fan thinks zombies are scary, likes funny zombies toys, wants to be prepared for a zombie invasion, or just likes eating brains - you've come to the right place.

Zombies have really been putting the popular in pop culture lately, and there's an enormous number of nifty zombie-related gifts and goodies out there. With dozens of zombie-themed gift ideas, this gift guide will help you find the best stuff for your favorite zombie geek (or yourself!).

Zombies... they're not just for B-movies anymore!

And here's your very first gift idea: the totally excellent "I <3 ZOMBIES" image featured here is available as a notebook, mousepad, t-shirt, hoodie, magnet, and more at Trained Monkeys.

Scary Zombie Movies (Horror)

Zombies are SCARY, yo. At least, when the movie has a decent budget.

Fast zombies or slow zombies, smart zombies or mindless zombies, brain-eating or flesh-eating... zombies are just plain scary. But somehow, Hollywood has a hard time making them scary without seeming totally lame. Check out the movies that do "scary zombie" right.

28 Days Later (Widescreen Edition)

This spine-tingling thriller masters the art of being just gruesome enough. "28 Days Later" manages to be scary on many levels, addressing many facets of a world with zombies besides just "Oh no, zombies!!" The characters are constantly on the run, struggling to find food and shelter, and even have to fight other survivors.

For the record, don't bother with "28 Weeks Later"; it has the worst case of Crappy-Sequel-Itis I've ever seen.

Dawn of the Dead (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut)

The all time zombie movie classic, Dawn of the Dead, was remade in 2004. Boasting well over 600 reviews on Amazon.com the director's cut defies all movie logic by being a remake of a classic that knocks everyone's socks off.

Amazon Price: $8.49 (as of 11/23/2009) Buy Now

I Am Legend (Widescreen Single-Disc Edition)

The zombies in "I Am Legend" are somewhat more people-gone-feral than true brain-eating mindless zombies, but it's an excellent zombie horror movie nonetheless.

The last uninfected man on earth fights to find a cure for the zombie outbreak, while haunted by flashbacks and fears about why he's immune to the virus. Just enough edge-of-your-seat violence and suspense, balanced with psychological complexity.

Cheesy Zombie Movies (B-movies)

When a movie tries to be scary and fails, it ends up being funny

Buckets of fake gore, hyperventilating heroines, and hackneyed plot devices. These zombie movies are so bad, they're good.

Funny Zombie Movies (Comedies)

zombies can be hilarious! zombies + comedy = movie genius

Funny zombies? Zombies eat brains. And human flesh. How can they be funny? You'd be surprised - check out the best funny zombie movies (and no, I don't mean that low-budget, I-can't-believe-they-made-this, MST3K-alicious kind of funny - I'm talking about funny on purpose!).

Shaun of the Dead

If you say "zombie comedy" most people immediately think "Shaun of the Dead". This movie takes classic-to-the-point-of-being-lame plot lines from two wildly different genres. Romantic Comedy's "boy fights to win back his ex-girlfriend's heart" plot and Horror's "ordinary folks fighting off a zombie invasion" plot come together in a perfect blend of hilarious mayhem.

I suspect that this awesome movie is much of the cause of the rising popularity of zombies. If you're buying a gift for a zombie nut, they're probably already seen this movie - but do they own it on DVD yet?

Fido

While it's less well-known than Shaun of the Dead, I personally like Fido even better. I stayed up all night to see it as part of a zombie movie marathon, and then ran home to pre-order it.

"Fido" is not only a funny movie about zombies, it's honestly quite heartwarming. Beautifully filmed and written to echo the overly-idyllic feel of 1950's sitcoms, Fido takes place in a world where zombies not only exist, they're commonplace worker-bees - delivering the newspapers, the milk, mowing lawns, and generally doing the menial work. Sweet, funny, existential, and morbid - what more can you ask for in a movie?

My Boyfriend's Back

This quietly brilliant zombie comedy gets a bit of bad wrap for being cheesy. "My Boyfriend's Back" IS cheesy, and it's knows it's cheesy, and - like Buffy or Billy and Ted - it just goes with it.

Under-appreciated and made before zombies were cooler than pirates, this silly teen zombie movie will be a fun gift for a zombie fan.

A funny zombie song with video of Undead from World of Warcraft

Even if you don't play World of Warcraft, you'll get a chuckle from this video. Some one took clips of Undead characters from the game interacting with Humans, and set it to Jonathon Coulton's amazing zombie song "re: Your Brains". This video was my introduction to both the video game and the singer/songwriter - and now I'm hooked on both of them!

Zombie Video Games

A fun-filled afternoon as a zombie - or fighting zombies! Take your pick.

Stubbs The Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse

Faintly reminiscent of the movie Fido with it's retro-fifties-sci-fi feel, Stubbs the Zombie is a gruesomely hilarious take on the "zombies have overrun our town" idea. You lead the horde of zombies, and have an entertaining array of creepy undead abilities such as taking off your own head to bowl down a group of enemies.

A somewhat older game, Stubbs the Zombie is underrated; like the movies it parodies it's something of a cult classic that your zombie fan may have missed.

Left 4 Dead

In Left 4 Dead you can choose to play as any one of four members of a group of zombie fighters in single player mode. During online play you can also choose to play as a special zombie with unique powers who commands a zombie horde.

Left 4 Dead makes a great gift for zombie fans; since the player base is large there's always some one to play with.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop

Dead Rising was originally released in 2006 as an Xbox 360 game, and is being re-released on the Wii in late February 2009. As the subtitle (Chop Til You Drop) implies, it takes place in a shopping mall, where you are trapped fighting a horde of zombies. Dead Rising takes full advantage of it's setting by allowing you to fight the zombies with a wide range of weapons snatched from the mall's stores and public areas, including golf clubs, flying pans, and umbrellas.

The Best Zombie Board Game

This game lets you play either side, as zombies or zombie-fighters

Last Night on Earth The Zombie Game

As a hardcore board game junkie, I can tell you this is one of my favorite board games. With multiple scenarios, it has tons of re-play-ability and it can be played with anywhere from 2 - 6 players. Gameplay is about an hour, which is enough time to sink your teeth into it, but not so long you get sick of it. I've been known to play it twice in one night - once as the zombies and once as the terrified townies trying to live through the night!
