George Romero's "Dead" Series

George A. Romero

The One That Started the Outbreak

Original Night of the Living Dead (1969)

Due to a copyright snafu by the makers, Night of the Living Dead is PUBLIC DOMAIN! I don't know exactly what that means to poor Ol' George, but one thing it does mean is that you can buy it for a dollar at your local supermarket. That's where I got my copy.

Quality differs greatly though depending on who's putting it out. This 30th Anniversary is a good copy to pick up. Much better than my dollar copy.

Day of the Dead (1985)

I love this one. Comical and depressing and scary throughout. This might even be my favorite Romero movie. Bub is awesome. He's bout the smartest I'll accept zombies being, and ONLY because it's George Romero. But gas station attendant from Land? No thank you.

Land of the Dead (2005)

Land of the Dead was awaited with much fanfare but met with mixed feelings. Perhaps it was just too much hype - the first Romero zombie flick in over 20 years. The effects and make-up were great, the acting was better than almost any other Dead movie, and plot holds promise. But Romero spends the entire film on the fence when it comes to zombie intelligence. He takes some of the stuff Bub did in "Day" to a new level, which turned a lot of hard-core fans off. Despite its flaws (and every Romero movie has it's fair share), I think it's still a fun zombie ride.

Uh, There Was One?

Diary of the Dead (2008)

What? This had so little exposure that I've met a lot of Romero fans that didn't even know about it. I haven't even seen this one yet. Let's see what Rotten Tomatoes.com has to say about it... 60%. Not bad. Some of my favorite movies have been lower than that. I'd better watch it tonight. {clicks his own Amazon link} Alright. Should have it soon.

Brain-Eating Zombies

Return of the Living Dead

Thanks for adding the brains nonsense!

You can thank the Return of the Living Dead for adding "BRAAAAAAAINS" to the Zombie lexicon. As every zombie purist knows, zombies no longer have functioning vocal chords, and thus the only sound one hears from a zombie is the trademark groan. Max Brook's Zombie Survival Guide covers that one. Anyway, like it or not, it's a part of the zombie mythos. And who really cares anyway, this is just fiction after all. Or is it?

Fast/Smart/Pseudo Zombies

What's wrong with this picture?

At Least It's In a Mall, Right?

The only thing similar in this movie to the original, FAR FAR SUPERIOR Dawn of the Dead is the fact that it's in the mall. The movie's not bad, if you can get over the RUNNING zombies, but it's not cool to original at all. Ken Foree makes a cameo, via way of mall TV set, but that's about the only connection to the original film.

That Guy's Eating Chicken Parts!

DON'T LET THAT BOX TEMPT YOU.

With it's very decent cover art, Zombiez succeeds in pawning itself off as a real B movie that might be worth renting. DON'T. I wouldn't even classify it as a real movie. It's some guy filming people running around a truck yard with a handy-cam. There's no attempt at a story-line. I mean, it's actually kind of shocking how bad this is. I got more mad that they were able to trick me into sending 2 dollars their way.

Just lame. Almost lamer that Zombiez. They set their zombie flick in a summer camp for the intellectually disabled - classy. And on top of that, it sucks. The actors are normal functioning doing the worst down syndrome imitations ever. Pass

Fast or Slow?

Let's settle the debate amongst Zombie fans right here!

Do You Like Slow/Stupid Zombies or Fast/Smart Zombies?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Slow

Dynomoose says:

Dead muscles and joints, no matter how well reanimated, can't move with speed and dexterity.

-Moron- says:

Both. I think it depends on how long they have been dead. Newly made zombies would have full body function. Only as they break down do they become slower. Also, a zombie does not feel pain, so it is much more likely to push its body beyond the normal range that a human would endure as long as the body could handle it without tearing its self apart.

alberttwolf says:

If I'm running from them I definitely prefer slow zombies. I don't run very fast.

CHRYSTINE says:

SLOW/STUPID ZOMBIES THE ORIGINAL AND BEST

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

Slow & Stupid, if you please!

Fast

PeterPan says:

I don't understand why it has to be one or the other. A more "realistic" ,hehe, approach would be to have different zombies. People would react differently to the desease. Some would be completely brain dead and not notice you at all, while others would be "intelligent" and hunt you. And then there would be all the in-between. It should also make a different if a zombie has gotten any fresh meat lately or it has been starving for a year.
If the zombies react in a predictable maner then it is easier for the survivors to take the right actions, but if the Zombies are completely unpredictable, then it gets harder to survive. And more fun to watch in a movie.

But if it came down to reality, then I vote for the slow ones;)

DFresh says:

Fast zombies make for a batter movies. In the words of the heroine of the 1991 Night of the Living Dead re-make, "...but, we could just walk around them."

Tigerbunny says:

I like a challenge. When I'm firing off rounds with my sub machine gun, or just blastin' em by the bunches with my shotgun... it's much more fun when they run at you ;D

Sxrxnrr says:

I have to say fast zombies are better for scare factor...especially in modern zombie flicks where the main characters have guns. Take away the guns and/or make it a comedy and slow zombies are the way to go.

Alexander says:

Slow zombies are better when there's plenty of gore and lots of them - particularly when they're really, really tough to kill (complete with severed hands dragging their way to victims).

Fast zombies are much scarier, though, and provide a better action scene.

The Walking Dead

The Best Comic Book Series Ever

Warning. Reading this series may ruin all other zombie stories for you, whatever the format, it's THAT good. Robert Kirkman is one of the most popular comic book writers today, and for good reason. His stories and dialog are so compelling. The art for the series is black & white with wonderfully gritty grey tones. Just buy them today. Seriously. George only WISHES his stuff was THIS good.

Other Notable Zombie Flicks

All of these are probably worth watching by most zombie movie fans. These are movies that:

  • Don't insult our intelligence
  • Passable acting and writing, or at least a cast that makes it bearable
  • Have good make-up and effects (even if low budget it will add to the story)
  • Don't pee all over zombies and their fans
