Zoo Tycoon on Wikipedia
Zoo Tycoon is a business simulation developed by Blue Fang Games and released by Microsoft Game Studios. It is a tycoon game in which the player must run a zoo, and try to make a profit. Although first released for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh in 2001, it was ported to the Nintendo DS in 2005. It was followed by two expansion packs, Category: Zoo Tycoon: Dinosaur Digs - and Category: Zoo Tycoon: Marine Mania - , which were released in 2002, as well as a sequel, Zoo Tycoon 2, released in 2004.

This is definitely a game that anyone in the family can play at some level. Parents can play the game with their very young children and learn what part of the world certain animals come from. My first grade children are definitely able to construct a working zoo, although they don't yet realize the importance of things like income and expenses. Older children and adults can certainly spend many hours with this game, and since Microsoft continues to release new animals and scenery via the web, the fun you can have with this game is just about unlimited. One nice feature is the ability to run the game in a window, so those of us with real work to do can leave a zoo running in the background, monitoring the progress from time to time.
