The film -directed by Michael Cacoyannis- it's based on the novel "Zorba the Greek", writed 1946 by Nikos Kazantzakis.

Zorba the greek's original version was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won three of them: for black-and-white Cinematography, for black-and-white Art Direction and for Best Supporting Actress.

The central aim of the film is the friendship between Zorba -a middle aged, nearly old greek- and Basil, a young English writer of Greek ancestry.

Two different characters - one friendship

Basil was going to travel from England to Crete, to take care of his inheritance (some land and an abandoned mine), when he meets up whit Zorba at a pub, immediately before the journey...
Zorba persuades Basil to hire him to work on the mine and after a short time, they began to come closer to each other. They go through many things together and at last, they become inseparable friends.
The contrast between the two men is enormous: Basil is reserved -allmost inhibited-devoting his life to the books, and Zorba is an spontaneous optimist, full of energy man with an extraordinary will for living life wich is very powerful and contagious!
