150 Years of Hungarian Porcelain

This Hungarian company has produced porcelain for both indoors and out for over 150 years. I learned about this remarkable porcelain in NY at The Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture. It was a happy chance that took me to NY when the school had an exhibition of Zsolnay products. The proprietary eosin glaze has a rich color and iridescent surface. It complements the simply modeled vases and animal forms on which it is used. Zsolnay also produces porcelain dinnerware and figurines in the usual mode, but it is the eosin that really sets this company apart.

More About Zsolnay Porcelain

Another Zsolnay animal figure.Zsolnay has continued to use the complicated methods necessary to product both frost-proof architectural elements and the eosin animals and vases that made them famous in the 19th century. Guest designers are invited to the factory to try new styles and to revive the use of older forms and glazes. But the best way to enjoy their products, short of buying your own, is seeing them.

These products of the Zsolnay factory look much like the production from other porcelain manufacturers.
