What is ZWOK? You are asking yourselves....

Well, if you don't know ZWOK, prepare to get hooked!

ZWOK is a free, online, multiplayer game where your goal is a very simple one. Hit the other ZWOKs with a ball weapon. If you know the old computer game Worms, it's similar, but it's free, it's online and it's massive addictive.

In this lense, I will offer strategy tips on screens, weapons and moves that may make your ZWOK experience a little more successful. I should know... I have played over 1000 matches in this awesomely addictive game. It's a wonder I have time to Squidoo... or go to work...

WARNING: PLAYERS WHO HAVE TRIED ZWOK HAVE FOUND THAT SEVEN HOURS LATER THEY ARE STILL SITTING IN FRONT OF A COMPUTER TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHERE-THE-HELL THE DAY WENT.

ZWOK The Game
So, first things first. This is the link to the game. Go play it for 30 or 40 rounds and come back here to read the rest of this lense.

NEWS! ZWoK has been revamped! The game now has a new weapon: <Spanners. It also has some interesting new screens, filled with ZWoK's deliciously disturbing art. The chat now offers a few more nifty new chat lines. Sweeet.

Weapons are at the core of ZWOK. The game offers five weapons, each (expect for one) is useful under different circumstances.
  • Normal - This is the basic weapon you start with. It has no benefits or unique functions. You need to score a direct hit on an opponent for a normal shot to cause any damage. Do not use this weapon if you have any other weapon available.

  • Roller - a very powerful weapon, the Roller continues to roll in its direction of motion once it hits the ground. If this rolling motion takes it up a hill, it slows and reverses direction. Falling in a valley, a roller will continue to roll until it settles at the bottom of the valley. A roller can hit the same player multiple times, and it can hit multiple player multiple times. It is especially useful when playing in hilly terrain, although the score awarded for a hit is proportional to the speed of motion of the bullet.

  • Cluster - the cluster splits up in mid-flight into three bullets. Two bullets continue the bullets forward motion, while one falls in the opposite direction. Bullets that hit the ground bounce, especially in hilly terrain. This ammunition is an excellent choice when attacking a sophisticated moving opponent, whose precise location is tough to judge. Note, if hitting the ground on an almost parrallel trajectory, a Cluster with function like a Roller, until it explodes. Therefore, for direct line of site shots, a Cluster is often superior to a Roller.

  • Bouncer - The Bouncer is a formidable weapon that bounces repeatedly when hitting the ground. Opponent trapped in a steep valley can be killed with one Bouncer shot, when they are repeatedly hit by the ricochetting bullet. Never be trapped in a steep valley, or prepare to face the wrath of the Bouncer. Note, Bouncer shots are tricky. Since the bullet bounces agrgessively, it is very easy to misjudge the trajectory and have the Bouncer fly out of the screen harmlessly.

  • Brick - The dreaded Brick is the great equalizer. If you are even slightly wounded, a direct hit from a Brick means instantaneous death. The catch: for a Brick to damage an opponent, it must hit the opponent directly. When wielded by a novice, a Brick is practically harmless (unless you are hit by a lucky shot). Wielded by an expert, under the right circumstances, the Brick can take out multiple opponents with a single shot. Bricks are best used under direct line of fire conditions, or in cases you are expecting a stationary target for which you already have a tested firing solution.

  • Spanners - Less deadly than the Brick, the Spanners have the added benefit of clustering. Your ZWoK throws a box with spanners. The box has a flight trajectory similar to Normal ammunition, but in mid-flight the Spanners fly from the box, one taking a higher flight path and the other a lower flight path. Upon hitting the ground the Spanners stick. In essence you are throwing three less lethal Bricks. The box itself is also much larger than a Brick, improving your chances for hitting something. The Spanners are an effective weapon against an opponent standing on difficult to reach higher ground. So far, I find the Spanners to be of questionable value.

The following are a few strategy tips for ZWOK beginners and intermediate players. In the coming days I will add a great deal of strategy pointers in this section. Please check again in a few days
  • MOVE - Regardless of how safe you think you are, always move between turns. Even if you think you are safe, an expert player knows how to get you, wherever you are standing.
  • Move Unpredictably - DO NOT continue to move in the same direction every turn. It is predictable and practically the same as standing still. If the enemy knows where you will be next, you will be dead.
  • Watch the Clock - You have only 10 seconds to move between turns. Always fire your weapon before the time expires unless (i) stopping would mean getting trapped in a horrible location; (ii) firing would harm you more than it would your opponent.
  • Your Team Sucks - it's true. You are almost as likely to get hit by friendly fire than by the enemy. Anticipate your team's movement and likely firing strategy and make sure you are not there.
  • Direct Fire is Better than Indirect Fire - If you can hit someone in a straight line, don't try to aim at an angle. Indirect shots are harder to plan and typically award fewer points per hit.
  • Brick is Bad for Scoring - The Brick is deadly, but it is difficult for novice players to use. Also, a Brick hit typically awards a lower score than would a multiple hit with a less deadly weapon.

When playing ZWOK for hours-on-end there are many things that will drive you nuts. Here is a list of my top peeves.
  • Miss the Buzzer - you just gotta get that extra inch of movement, and you do, but you miss the shot deadline by a microsecond. Duh!
  • Lucky Stiff - you get nailed by one or more lucky shots in the first round of the game, and you're out of there...
  • You Get the Boot - ohhhh, I HATE getting booted out of the game for performance reasons. Is it my fault that my ISP sucks? AND you know you are always getting kicked-out on your best screens.
  • Your Team Sucks - you know it's coming. There is always one fool on your team that will nail you in the head with a direct shot. Many times I have been tempted to start a new round by nailing both my teammates with a brick to the head. It's purely defensive!
  • I am a Green! - I belong to the Grienz. I hate it when I get assigned to the Blooz team. I can play equally well on both teams, but I feel like I am betraying my people. In fact... I am tempted to turn traitor on those evil Blooz. That'll show them.

Here is your chance to brag about your ZWOK successes: print screen and add a picture showing your ZWOK rank, your best game score, an amazing trick shot you came up with. Put your pictures where your mouth is. Prove your claims. Show us the money.

Be sure to only upload small sized JPGs or they will run off the page.

THE GAME IS NOT MULTIPLAYER. The creators FAKED IT. You can pause the game by simply right-clicking. The bots are way too stupid to be human and have stupid names. Crap, would be a nice game.....

I also found the other players overly stupid, why the hell did no one else storm against the enemies and attack them up close?
